As a historian, I would ask him to NOT destroy his diary but to preserve it. I would advise him to put a ‘lock’ on the release of the contents for at least 50 years. That caveat is often done for many public official’s personal papers and is considered an acceptable practice.

A diary can contain first impressions without adjustment as well as speculation without followup. He knows the sense of how he made the regular notations and knows whether it is trustworthy, truly accurate or below a standard of accounting events that he would hold to normally.
