God Is Three
Grace to You.org ^ | 1997 | John MacArthur, Grace Community Church

"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all" (2 Corinthians 13:14).

Though there is only one God, He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

God is one, but He exists in three distinct Persons. We call this the Trinity, a contraction of "tri-unity," meaning "three in one." The word Trinity doesn't appear in the Bible, but God's existence as three Persons in one God is clear from Scripture.

Old Testament evidence of God's plurality can be found in the very first verse: "In the beginning God . . ." (Gen. 1:1). The Hebrew word used for God is Elohim, which is a plural noun. Isaiah 42:1 speaks of the Messiah: "Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations." The Messiah says in Isaiah 48:16, "The Lord God has sent Me, and His Spirit."

The New Testament is more explicit about God's triune nature. After Jesus' baptism, the Spirit of God descended upon Him as a dove, and the Father said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased" (Matt. 3:17). The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are together in the same scene.

Jesus says, "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth" (John 14:16-17). Paul closes 2 Corinthians by saying, "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all" (13:14). Peter declares that believers are chosen "according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 1:2).

So God is one, but God is three. This is a profound mystery that no human illustration can adequately describe and no scientific explanation can prove. The Trinity is something we have to take on faith, because God has taught it in Scripture.

Suggestions for Prayer

Praise God that He is so far above our finite understanding, yet has chosen to reveal Himself to us.

For Further Study

Read John 14-16.

What does Jesus teach about His relationship with the Father and the Spirit? What do you learn here about the different functions or ministries of each member of the Trinity?

God, the father.

I did. Wednesday.

Thursday was a sabbath because of Passover. Friday was the day the women bought and prepared the spices. Saturday was the regular weekly Sabbath on which they rested.

It works out of 3 days and 3 nights, which the Gregorian calendar doesn’t.

The Gregorian calendar makes Jesus a liar then.

Personally, I’d sooner trust Jesus than some man-made calendar.

For one thing, I didn’t see it.

Another is that I didn’t make any statements that if you don’t believe what my church teaches, you’re going to hell.

However, I’ll wing it. Pagan gods are individual entities, a god of rocks, a god of the sky, a god of water, etc.

The Trinity is an attempt to explain the nature of ONE God as revealed in Scripture.

You have a body, a sou, and a spirit. All are part of what makes you you.

Which part of those is the real you?

Wednesday?

Hmm, that would seem to make Jesus a liar since he said he would rise on the third day ( Luke 9:22 )
We know that third day was Sunday from Luke 24:21 and Luke 24:46.

So let’s see if Wednesday to Sunday is three days.

Wednesday - day one
Thursday - day two
Friday - day three
Saturday - day four
Sunday - day five

Sorry, Jesus said on the third day, not the fifth day. I guess anyone stating Wednesday makes Jesus out to be a liar.

I guess you don’t realize the NT itself gives an example of a 72 hour period of three days and three nights, but says the period was over 4 days. Do you know where?

I wonder if metmom knows any rabbis?

Hmm, if yes, ask the rabbi if a baby is born on Wednesday at 3:00pm ( exact time you say Jesus died ), when is the 8th day when that baby must be circumcised?

Here is what the rabbi will tell you:

Wednesday - day 1
Thursday - day 2
Friday - day 3
Saturday - day 4
Sunday - day 5
Monday - day 6
Tuesday - day 7
Wednesday - 8th day

So the rabbi would answer baby must be circumcised on following Wednesday by sundown.

Now, the above chart is very instructive for anyone claiming a Wednesday crucifixion. Notice when the third day is from Wednesday, it’s Friday! We know it is impossible for Jesus to have risen on Friday.
But look at what day Sunday is from Wednesday, the 5th day!

No, this Wednesday is nothing but a satanic invention meant to cast doubt and confusion about the Scriptures and the Christian Faith.

Pagans believe in a plurality of gods. Zeus is the father. Apollo is his son. Christens believe in a father god with a son. how is it different.

Where did Jesus the son come from? if he is created by the father than he is lacking something the father has and is less "divine". If the spirit is created by the father and the son then he must be less "divine" than even the son.

The spirit wasn’t created by the Father.

Only Jesus’ body was created. His inherent nature is God’s clothed in a human body.

Only the Holy spirit can break through the deception that leads a person to put the words of men above the Word of God.

interesting comment, I asked you up thread how this "trinity" was different than the "pagan" belief in Polytheism, and you failed to respond.

I've always wondered why the "pagan" belief in Polytheism, is so similar to the "trinity".

I wonder if anyone will respond.

Pointing is rude; I've been told.

Let me POST 1 Corinthians 1:10 for the lazy looker-uppers.

1 Corinthians 1:10
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

Golly; it looks like PAUL wrote it and there is no 'command', but an appeal.

So I guess the bottom line is...

...why aren't YOU agreeing with ME?

Lol, still not able to tell me what day Jesus died on and what day he rose.

If it were REALLY important; it would be in Scripture that Rome gave us.

Since Rome FAILED to do so; I'm sure it can conjure up SOMETHING that is really important about it.

Pagans believe in a plurality of gods.

I've heard that...

Doctrine and Covenants:

According to that which was ordained in the midst of the Council of the Eternal God of all other gods before this world was, that should be reserved unto the finishing and the end thereof, when every man shall enter into his eternal presence and into his immortal rest. (Section 121:32)

And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife, and make a covenant with her for time and for all eternity, if that covenant is not by me or by my word, which is my law, and is not sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, through him whom I have anointed and appointed unto this power, then it is not valid neither of force when they are out of the world, because they are not joined by me, saith the Lord, neither by my word; when they are out of the world it cannot be received there, because the angels and the gods are appointed there, by whom they cannot pass; they cannot, therefore, inherit my glory; for my house is a house of order, saith the Lord God. And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, and it is sealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of promise, by him who is anointed, unto whom I have appointed this power and the keys of this priesthood; and it shall be said unto them--Ye shall come forth in the first resurrection; and if it be after the first resurrection, in the next resurrection; and shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depths--then shall it be written in the Lamb's Book of Life, that he shall commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, and if ye abide in my covenant, and commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world; and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever. Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them. (Section 132:18-20)

Abraham received concubines, and they bore him children; and it was accounted unto him for righteousness, because they were given unto him, and he abode in my law; as Isaac also and Jacob did none other things than that which they were commanded; and because they did none other things than that which they were commanded, they have entered into their exaltation, according to the promises, and sit upon thrones, and are not angels but are gods. (Section 132:37)

Well we know from history that Paganism preceded christianity, the Greek and Roman gods were in place long before the “Christ event.”

That is not really answering the question. I asked: Where did Jesus the son come from? if he is created by the father than he is lacking something the father has and is less "divine". If the spirit is created by the father and the son then he must be less "divine" than even the son.

I am not asking about the human form I am asking about the "divine" entity.
I believe that the majority of christians accept the Thomistic 5 proofs of God's existence. So where did the Son come from? If we accept the necessity of a highest power why was/ is there a need for a second equal power and certainly why the need for a third co-equal power? How and why did these second and third powers come to be?
