Christianity And LGBT Rights: 70% Of US Catholics Say Gays Should Be Accepted By Society

American Christians have become a lot more tolerant of homosexuality over the past eight years, according to a landmark study released by the Pew Research Center on Tuesday that showed big gains in acceptance since the last time the study was conducted in 2007. The 2014 Religious Landscape Study, a survey of more than 35,000 Americans, examined a vast array of religious and social issues, including immigration.

The study concluded that nearly all major religious groups have become significantly more accepting of homosexuality -- and almost all Christian groups are more accepting than they were in 2007. It holds true even for evangelical Protestants and Mormons, who have traditionally strongly opposed same-sex relationships.

Overall, 54 percent of all self-described Christians said homosexuality should be accepted by society -- up from 44 percent in 2007. Among Catholics, the percentage jumped from 58 percent in 2007 to 70 percent in 2014. And 36 percent of evangelicals (of all races) and Mormons called for more acceptance, up from 26 percent and 24 percent, respectively. Among members of historically black Protestant churches, the acceptance rate jumped from 39 percent in 2007 to 51 percent in 2014.

"Despite attempts to paint religious people as monolithically opposed to LGBT rights, that's just not the case, and these numbers prove that," Jay Brown, head of research and education at the gay rights organization Human Rights Campaign Foundation, told the Religion News Service.

I accept that they are perverts and are to be avoided.

One more example of why “Catholics” will do and say NOTHING when homosexuality becomes part of the religion.

Just “gays”? Please don’t exclude any of the other sexual deviant behaviors.

Gays should be accepted by society - Jesus told us to minister to sinners and to those in need. I accept adulterers, if they sincerely repent and reform. I accept thieves under the same conditions. However, their perversions and their sinful choices should not be celebrated any more than other sins should be celebrated.

One more example of why “Catholics” will do and say NOTHING when homosexuality becomes part of the religion.

Protestant FReepers have pointed out repeatedly on the RF that Catholics are more liberal than "sola scriptura" Christians. They vote with the Democrats, on any poll they are ALWAYS on the left. This study by PEW is yet another confirmation of it.

How they manage to get away with their conservative facade on this, the most conservative forum on the net, is beyond me.

I would have difficulty answering the poll as the word of God tells me I can NOT approve sexual immorality in Romans 1:

“God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality,[c] wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving,[d] unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same

————but also approve of those who practice them.” (emphasis mine)

So I don’t want to approve of this behavior but neither would I refuse to greet them, ride on a bus with them, or acknowledge that like all mankind we are sinners in need of repentance.

It is a strong line between loving your neighbor as yourself and approving of his sinful behavior. As usual, this poll does not acknowledge that line.

Catholics stop worshiping God and Jesus decades ago...they worship liberalism now.

Being accepted into society does NOT mean receiving the Sacraments.

That is absolutely NOT TRUE of our FR Catholics. They’re solidly pro life/marriage/family.

So let me see.

70% of the 20% of the population (an absolute maximum, 10% is more realistic) who claim to be Catholic vs. 54% of "All Christians" or even 36% of "Evangelical Protestants".

What's that work out to in real terms ? At a bare minimum every bit as many "Evangelical Protestants" who advocate accepting queers and probably something like twice as many people who claim to be other sorts of Christians advocating accepting queers.

It's a nice misdirection from the real root of the moral problems in our overwhelmingly Protestant nation, though.

Cut the crap. The Lesbo-homo “HERO” law in Houston just lost overwhelmingly.

The world is upside down. The perverted is respected and the conventional is being treated like it should be shunned.

Isn't it ironic?

Also, Catholics ought to start reading the Holy Bible for themselves instead of letting others tell them what it says.

Okay. Thanks for your insight. Now I can get on with my day...

...expect that percentage to shrink as the Catholic Church schisms into progressive and traditionalist (the smaller one) factions.

According to the actuarial tables, if I’m lucky I have another 12-14 years left on earth...I don’t know if I’ll live to see the Church schism into those groups, but I’m hoping I do...

A small tight traditional faction would be fine with me...bring back the bells and smells...
