Catholic Mass Lectionary Omits Anti-Homosexualism Verses from Romans 1

Why do Catholics in America support homosexuality proportionately more than the general population?

Two reasons: lack of authentic Catholic teaching regarding homosexuality, and the Church omitted one of the clearest Bible verses on homosexuality from the lectionary.

One of the very unfortunate results of the New Lectionary is that verses that might be deemed offensive have been omitted from our liturgical celebrations. (I've written about how three "offensive" Psalms were removed from the Liturgy of the Hours after 1971 here.)

Verses against Homosexuality Omitted from Current Lectionary

An example of the silence of offensive passages is from the readings of last week [October 11th], where the reading of Saint Paul against homosexuality (including female lesbianism) in Romans 1:26-32 is notably omitted from the cycle. Below are the readings for the 28th Week in Ordinary Time (Lectionary 468 and 469):

Tuesday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time

    Lectionary: 468
    Reading 1 ROM 1:16-25

Wednesday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time

    Lectionary: 469
    Reading 1 ROM 2:1-11

So what's missing? Romans 1:26-32 is clipped out. Yet this passage at the end of Romans 1 is the locus classicus for Paul's theology against homosexual behavior and it also forms the cited passage in the Catechism of the Catholic Church for its teaching...

Roman Catholic censoring of key Bible verses condemning same-sex sexual relationships brings Galatians 1:8-9 to mind.

This is done according to the liturgical year. We don’t know why certain readings are chosen and others aren’t.

It happened in 1971. This is a part of the original problem.

They also took out the reading about recieving our Lord’s body unworthily. In 1971. To pretend not to know why is somewhat naive.

Romans 1:26-32 New International Version (NIV)

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.

27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.

29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,

30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;

31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.

32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Romans 1:26-32 King James Version (KJV)

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Romans 1:26-32 Young’s Literal Translation (YLT)

26 Because of this did God give them up to dishonourable affections, for even their females did change the natural use into that against nature;

27 and in like manner also the males having left the natural use of the female, did burn in their longing toward one another; males with males working shame, and the recompense of their error that was fit, in themselves receiving.

28 And, according as they did not approve of having God in knowledge, God gave them up to a disapproved mind, to do the things not seemly;

29 having been filled with all unrighteousness, whoredom, wickedness, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil dispositions; whisperers,

30 evil-speakers, God-haters, insulting, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 unintelligent, faithless, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful;

32 who the righteous judgment of God having known — that those practising such things are worthy of death — not only do them, but also have delight with those practising them.

The Catholic Church’s teaching is clear, and unambiguous. Homosexual orientation is disordered, that is, not in line with natural law. It is the PRACTICE of homosexuality that is sinful. The Pope has even stated this, though you haven’t heard that in the media; doesn’t go with their template of how ‘tolerant’ he is.

Are you talking about Francis? The pope who blessed a lesbian and her “family” and who encouraged her to continue writing her homo books for children?

There's no "censoring" of Bible verses; the Bible reads just the same as it always has.

Whether or not it was a good idea to omit those particular passages from the Lectionary is debatable. However, it was done in 1970, long before most of the current insanity had taken hold.

The teachings clear but the cuts from the lectionary are an example the lack of emphasis on that teaching. We have had a split in the Church since the Council, and those who raved about the “spirit of Vatican 2” created a false image of what the documents of that council actually mandated. The liberal faction prevails until John Paul II was chosen. Thereafter their hold was weakened but not eliminated. John Paul was never able to get full compliance with his views. Many but hardly all of the new bishops thought as he did because the national hierarchies demanded a kind of trade off. Neither Orthodox nor liberal bishops did much to control who went into the priesthood until after the priest scandal broke. Meanwhile many gay men entered the priesthood and moved up the
ranks . There is a kind of defacto alliance between then and the marxists, which has left the priesthood greatly compromised.

Any corrections gladly accepted, but i could not find 1 cor 11:27 when I searched. 1 cor 11:23-26 is included in the celebration of our Lord’s supper but verse 27 is left out. If you know which cycle and day it is please let me know.

Tell me this was an honest error.

Perhaps they did not want to offend. They were showing the tolerance Pope Francis is trying to teach the Catholic church.

A most kind defense. I saw a few months ago or was it a year, that Catholics hear the entire Bible over a three year period. This article casts some doubt on that claim. Don't you see a problem with the obvious omission exposed in this article? The previous verses on man's sinful nature are read then homosexuality omitted and skips to chapter 2?
