8 Bands You Didn’t Realize Were Christian
BeliefNet ^ | 10/15/2015

Posted on 10/16/2015 7:31:14 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

These eight bands may not have the Christian Rock label but biblical themes and their Christian faith are at the root of much of their music.

1. Lenny Kravitz

American rock singer-songwriter, Lenny Kravitz is a devout Christian and his spirituality transcends not only in the spiritual themes of his music but also in his personal life – he committed to remain celibate for years and has a cross tattoo on his back as a reminder of his faith. Did you know Kravitz’s song “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” is about Jesus?

2. U2

From the Bono led Irish rock band’s start, U2 has been passionate about their faith to the point where it even challenged the group’s future. Many believed Christianity and rock music could not be married, bringing to the surface the question whether Christian faith could live in the secular rock world. Even through the debate, the band not only didn’t lose their religion, their music is a powerful example of spirituality meeting beautiful music.

3. Switchfoot

While the band doesn’t believe their music fall into the Christian faith genre, the members of Switchfoot are devout Christians and are often referred to as a Christian rock band, their music appears in Christian retail outlets, they play at Christian musical festivals are featured on Christian charts and appear on Christian radio.

4. Underoath

While their music isn’t primarily sold in the Christian music space, members of the band are open about their faith and aren’t afraid of sharing it in their music.

5. Kings of Leon

While their music is generally given the secular label, their background as sons of a United Pentecostal Church preacher is evident in much of their music, with many songs dealing with the topic of redemption.

6. P.O.D.

From the beginning, P.O.D. which stands for Payable on Death have been representatives of Christ and share their personal testimonies in their music and on tour. P.O.D.’s frontman also leads the Whosoevers ministry, a movement that spreads the Gospel to youth, in hopes of encouraging millions about Christ around the world.

7. Evanescence

Ben Moody, the co-founder and main songwriter of Evanescence was originally apart of the Christian rock world and many of the band’s musical themes deal with religious and Christian themes. Before the band’s mainstream success, their music was primarily found in Christian music shops.

8. Lifehouse

Jason Wade, the lead vocalist of the Los Angeles originated American rock band, Lifehouse is a Christian. In his younger years, he and another band member were involved in their church’s youth group, playing worship music at church. A number of their songs deal with the personal impact of Jesus and God’s love. A reviewer from CCM, a Christian Music Magazine said in a positive review of the band that "Lifehouse … sports more poetic sense and spiritual insight than most rock bands currently on the traditional Christian circuit."

“Here some Christian artists I listen to. Bill Mallonee/Vigilantes of Love, Mark Heard, Steven Taylor/Chagal Guevara, The Vespers, Poema, Buddy Miller.”

Here are some Christian artists I listen to: Giovanni Pierluigi da Pelestrina, Thomas Tallis, John Sheppard, William Byrd, and a host of Russian composers.

Why? Because none of the people you listed could ever produce even this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWQeAaWKELY and it has no words.

And they most certainly could not produce this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx-_XCOFX3g

Or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDOENZediM8

Or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIzBaXiEMLc

The simple fact is that much of what is called “Christian music” these days is not much less ugly, coarse or secular than secular music.

Yeah, just because they don't do Christian music doesn't mean they aren't Christians.

David Ellefson, like his bandmate Dave Mustaine, is a committed Christian. "Well, I was actually brought up in a Christian household, so I have, you know, a pretty broad knowledge of it; and strayed from it for quite a while. And, now that I have children, I actually do go to church, so I've kinda sorta returned to it, you know?" David further discussed his Chistianity in a 2010 interview on The Full Armor of God Broadcast explaining "I've found that when you just suit up and show up and walk your talk instead of talking your talk all the time, that is often the best testimony!"

Back in the day a lefty/collectivist/redistributionist Bono was a constant presence in the news as he was always spouting boneheaded stuff about The West/capitalism being the cause of Third World poverty. Once he grew up and saw — and explicitly spoke about — capitalism being the only hope for the Third World, his political activism became the sound of crickets to the collectivist totalitarian americaphobes. In other words he “devolved” from being a Useful Idiot to a sellout. In a way I am surprised he has not been targeted by the Social Justice Warriors rather than simply being ignored.

Spock’s Beard. Their album “Snow” is a not at all subtle allegory for the life of Jesus.

Not sure if Neal Morse was a fully committed Christian at the time of recording “Snow” with his brother and Spock’s Beard, but after his daughter’s miracle he sure became committed.

Steve Taylor released an album this year. It’s called Goliath and it rocks. His voice is still amazing.

"Wonder about the Doobies Brothers, cuz Jesus was just alright with them."

I don't know about the others, but Michael McDonald is. We went to the same church. You haven't lived until you've heard him sing Christmas Carols.

Check out his song "Peace". Fabulous.

Pat was my neighbor for about ten years. Nice enough and willing to give back to the community. Never discussed religion with him but never saw him behave in a mean or selfish manner.

"Evanescence is not a Christian rock band. Ben Moody hasn’t been with the group for 15 years and neither has David Hodges. David Hodges has done some great Christian inspired music (check out Shattered by Trading Yesterday). He writes a lot of hit pop songs these days."

Amy Lee and her husband are Christian. Mr G spent a weekend working with them several years ago.

“I may listen to some of the artists you recommend, because...well, I have an open mind about music.....unlike you.”

It has nothing to do with “openness” of mind. The simple fact is that the classics are aesthetically superior than the often heavily secular influenced stuff that passes for “Christian music” today.

His wife was the daughter of a minister as well. They’ve been together since the ‘70s, I believe. Their daughter is in the stage act now.

I’ve read that “Yah Mo” was Michael singing about Yahweh without wanting to say the name, as some write it as G-d.
