III. Their Pretentious Pride The text says, They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. I find that many commentators miss the meaning and nuance of this, trying to make sense of it from their cultural perspective rather than understanding it in its proper context. These were disciples trying to flearn from and ollow their master. Who would be the greatest disciple ? The Messiah explained it in terms of their service to each other. As a modern example, one does not become a great disciple by studying the Bible. One must be a doer of the commandments.
