Good food...cold beer....lots of laughs....good memories.
Don was a great DM...very smart and very creative and a great sence of humor....we did all kinds of adventures inluding time travel and stuff
We even had to use an English dart board for some attacks instead of rolling a D20....which really put the onus on some hand eye skill when Using Bows, darts, or any type of thrown weapons... Still in touch with Don and still have all my stuff safe in storage.
Well, yeah. I usually DM’d. Girls ALWAYS got special treatment. Because, well, you know. They’re girls.
Girl: “I rolled a 3”
Dm: “close enough. The wraith keels over, dead”
Guys: “Hey! No fair!”
Dm: (whispers). “Shut up! She’s like the only female who’s talked to you -except for the cafeteria lady- in the past three months! What are you whining about????”
And so on.... I’m guessing that you saw about the same thing.
And, if you get the chance, watch the Dead Alewives movie clip that was posted. I’d not see it before. Made my stomach hurt, I laughed so hard.
Because he’s a Catholic now.

I’ve played, too, for many years and still play a version of it. It is all about the player though. I’ve had a satanist try to weasel his way into our group, but we wouldn’t have it. He finally stopped hassling us and bothered another group who then kicked him out for being obscene and disrupting the game with his requests to “cast real spells.”
I have no doubt satanists will use it as a vehicle.
Huh. And all this time I thought he let me get away with everything because I sucked so hard at playing and he felt sorry for me...

You could have enslaved the DM, and most of the other players, into your own personal harem. Used them to further your own selfish ambitions, then cast their empty, broken shells aside. And they would have been THRILLED about it.

You forget... I was a girl nerd.
One day I showed up all dressed up in a mini-skirt, blouse, and makeup. Had my hair did. I had a date directly after the game.
The guys all looked up at me, puzzled, as I walked into the room. (We’d moved to the library by that point)
(DM) “Excuse me miss. But this is a private party.”
(me - taking my seat) “Very funny. Pass me a Jolt”
(crickets)
(whisper) “OMG. That’s Marie.”
(another whisper) “She’s a GIRL!”
(room erupts in howls)
They teased me for a month - in a friendly way.
I was cute at that age, but wasn’t capable of enslaving anyone. Shrank back into my trench coat, metal shirt, and jeans for another year.

Hey, girls are scary!!! They have Magical Female Powers(tm) that they use to enchant us and make us their slaves! And they're all like "Hapless male--COME TO ME!!!" and we're all like "must . . . obey . . . beautiful . . . girl . . . " Then they reject us and break our hearts.
I'm trying to figure out just why you decided to respond to that particular post (which wasn't aimed at you) and what you mean by it. It was humorous and wasn't on the subject of satanism or demons or abortion or Catholicism, yet you seem to be implying something hostile. And since for the most part I consider you an ally, I can't understand where this hostility of yours is coming from.
Hmm. I think that you're selling yourself short. That and, bluntly, so long as you'd bathed sometime in past year, and didn't have a beard like a Confederate general.... you'd look like an enchantress to the average 16-year-old DnD nerd.
And honestly, the beard might be negotiable.
Really. The HS guys I played with would look at the troll you were talking about upthread and say, "Hmmm. You know, green scaly skin isn't THAT much of a turnoff. A little makeup here and there, annnnnnd......." :-)
To bring this full circle, that's why I think the original article is so much bunk. Nerds didn't have time for such hokum, when we weren't nerd-ing, 100% of the extra time was spent thinking about girls. :-)
Nice talking to a fellow DnD'er. I'm getting WBill Jr. into it, slowly. Kicks his imagination into overdrive. All the Dice rolls make him do math, calculate fractions, multiplication, etc, etc etc. No challenges for him there, anymore, though, he's moved past that.
Now, I make all of the magic he sees - scrolls, etc, be written in French (I speak it, a little). So, he can figure them out, but it takes some effort and thought.
More fun than just hack and slash. But, there's some of that, too.
ZC, there's a girl DnD player, posting on this very thread. Frightened? Do you:
A) Run Away! Run Away!
B) Trip the nearest person, then, Run Away! Run Away!
C) Start counting to three.
We'll be waiting to taunt you, after you respond....
