Bernie Sanders will venture into unfamiliar territory on Sept. 14 when he delivers a convocation speech at Liberty University, a massive evangelical Christian university in central Virginia.
Sanders, a culturally Jewish democratic socialist, is an odd headliner for the reliability conservative school that was founded by the late Jerry Falwell, a Southern Baptist preacher known as the father of the Christian right.
Liberty released their fall convocation schedule on Wednesday and Sanders was listed at the Sept. 14 speaker. The other speakers include Christian artists and authors Korie and Sadie Robertson, stars of A&E's Duck Dynasty, and Rep. Louie Gohmert, a conservative congressman from Texas.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a firebrand conservative courting evangelical voters in the GOP presidential primary, launched his campaign at Liberty....

Jerry may in fact have let him come and speak. You have to teach students how to be able to defend their positions and the ideals the ones they oppose have. Teaching a class on the Holocaust one might expect a teacher to have students read Hitlers manifesto not to teach Hitler's views as right but rather to show what was horribly wrong. IOW the teachers there would not be your run of the mill liberals praising him but rather having the class discuss what all was wrong in his speech. Especially in contrast to the other speakers. Falwell himself once co-hosted a show opposite of Bob Beckel and did a great job taking him on.
So silencing the opposition is now a conservative action? Know thine enemy begins with listening to him. Then you can point out the fallacies in his discourse.
Good friend, or a Man of God trying to help the unsavable find salvation?
Excellent post in my view.
He is just simply is going to give a speech, that is all, no more, no less.
Do not worry, his chances (Sanders) of winning the White House are very, very low.
It’s true; Jerry Falwell and Larry Flynt were friends.
I grew up in Lynchburg and I currently live ten miles away from Liberty University. My in-laws are friends of the Falwell family. Jerry had no illusions about the type of man Flynt was, but he maintained a friendship with him, and prayed for his salvation until the day he (Jerry) died.
