Now if we could only get rid of the “Peace be with you but not if you want to get out of your parking spot in front of me” handshake
Seriously? “No gesture is prescribed for the lay faithful in the Roman Missal; nor the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, therefore the extending or holding of hands by the faithful should not be performed.” So in other words, the Roman Missal doesn’t say anything about it therefore it should not happen.
Is this really what the priests and bishops think is important right now?
So glad to hear this! Holding hands with pew neighbors is way too touchy feely / 70’s for me. Not sure when / where this terrible habit began.
I was taught that
no gesture is prescribed for the lay faithful in the Roman Missal; nor the General Instruction of the Roman Missal,
thus any instruction of how to gesture during the Our Father from anyone other than the Roman Missal in not authorized.
However, the holding of hands can symbolize a community, but this should not take place until AFTER communion, thus holding hands during the Our Father is not preferable.
My wife and I hold hands when pray at church for the sense of unity in Christ it gives us....
As Luke wrote in Acts 17:11, Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
It’s about time....people extending their arms in whatever position that is called MUST have the bishops permission to do so.
I rather like the hand holding.
I bow my head, close my eyes and pray. I will not hold hands if at all possible.
Good one for the Bishop of Covington, Kentucky!
This 2011 Bishops statement was never enforced, so naturally the hand holding and the people taking over even the priests orans posture for themselves is now rampant. So much so that I heard or read that the USCCB will be approving hand holding in the Novice Ordo.
Since the priests have been quite cowardly to teach and admonish, of course, all the creativity during the Mass is now called “local custom”.
What a crock.
Oops, Novus Ordo. Sorry about that. I wrote “Novice” Ordo.
I say Amen.
