As Catholics we believe in the sanctity of life - from conception to natural death, right? For the most part it is, but not always. I cannot count the times Ive spoken to parishioners that say, I might not agree with abortion, but I support a womans right to choose, or I think abortion is wrong, except in certain cases, such as rape.
This kind of thinking not only impedes progress in the fight for life, but is also in direct conflict with the Churchs teaching. The Catechism is very clear, Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law. (2271) Nowhere does it say we can add exceptions or support choice for others.
In most instances, I think (and pray) its a matter of miscommunication or misunderstanding. Clarification is imperative. Parish pro-life groups are doing all they can to educate; however, we need our priests to be more proactive and meet the challenge head-on. It needs to be addressed from the pulpit and in their newsletters and not just during those days, weeks or months dedicated to pro-life campaigns. Parishioners need to be reminded that compromising on abortion is just as sinful as a woman having one. Both violate the teachings of the Church.
My prayer is that as priests clarify issues of life they stress that all is not lost
Those who have strayed by compromising can change their ways, and women who have had an abortion can be healed from their shame and regret. We have a loving and compassionate God, who forgives through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Very few priests mention abortion in their homilies. We had one that did, and people were furious because, in doing so, he also explained partial birth abortion in detail, and after a few weeks went by, and he discussed artificial means of birth control, as well, they “literally” chased him out of town. People “angrily” followed him following Mass. He was transferred within weeks.
What pro-life peoples can do [and this would apply mainly to Catholics as they understand the grace] is to follow Father John A. Hardon’s advice, and pray before the Blessed Sacrament often, for the end of abortion. The reason abortion is still around, I would imagine, is because not enough people are doing so. http://www.therealpresence.org/archives/Abortion_Euthanasia/Abortion_Euthanasia_003.htm
I would like to know how many Catholics have admitted in the Confessional to having voted Democrat. Voting for those who support baby-murder is surely a sin, is it not?
“Except in the case in which a voter is faced with all pro-abortion candidates, a candidate that is pro-abortion disqualifies himself from receiving a Catholics vote. This is because being pro-abortion cannot simply be placed alongside the candidate’s other positions on Medicare and unemployment, for example; and this is because abortion is intrinsically evil and cannot be morally justified for any reason or set of circumstances. To vote for such a candidate even with the knowledge that the candidate is pro-abortion is to become an accomplice in the moral evil of abortion. If the voter also knows this, then the voter sins mortally.” https://www.ewtn.com/vote/brief_catechism.htm
You know what? I recently heard on a Catholic talk show that a lot of Catholics are Democrat because they don’t feel “welcome” in the Republican party. They say they are more “accepted” in the Democrat party. Oh gee, I wonder why that would be? Do you have any thoughts on why this might be? Why do Catholics feel “ran off” by some republicans? HHMMMM
For the record though my state is chock full of Democrats but a lot of them are old school if you know what I mean. They can’t stand Obozo as much as we can’t. They are very pro life, (once you get away from Charleston that is) they are also very pro gun. This is a coal mining state and these Democrats don’t care much for... well I won’t use that word on this forum but you know what, be messing with their coal mining industry. Oh and Yes these Democrats do fly the Confederate flag in some parts.
In general, and by population, most Catholics in the USA are no longer orthodox. There is a reason for that.
A large number of Catholics are poorly catechized and real know-nothings of the faith, because the vast numbers of converts and cradle Catholics are products of public schools who have systematically dumbed down Americans since at least the 50’s. So are their catechists. The decline in teaching has followed the trend of declining public school and universities.
Public schools have been owned lock, stock and barrel by the socialist/Marxist apparatus found in The Democrat Party and Soros/Bill Gates types of influences that now have a strangle hold on curriculum, including the content and substance of thought. In urban areas, on both coasts, the populations are subjected to union teachers. The union was birthed by communist sympathizers. The Church seminaries were reportedly infiltrated with socialists/communists and gays. Russians revealed this strategy and reported its existance.
Many Catholics are so dumbed down that touchy feely Democrat issues, will trump Church teachings on any given day.
How do we know how many Catholics are dupes? I believe the answer can be found in the Catholic voting habits. They are to be pitied.
“But by the Grace of God, there go I.”
“A large number of Catholics are poorly catechized “
Two words: Baltimore Catechism.
Yes I quite agree with you, on all of it.
Morgana dear, until this is declared a Catholic Caucus, I won’t comment. I think we’ve all had enough nonsense these past few days. An excellent topic, though.
You mean that they thought a party that booed God was more accepting to them than one with a pro-life plank?
Oh gee, I wonder why that would be? Do you have any thoughts on why this might be?
Perhaps their religious beliefs are less relevant to them than their politics.
BTTT!
From now on...I will post all of these in caucus.
cafeteria Catholics
You see however, Abortion is a topic that affects all Christians, they just don’t know it.
I don’t care which church/denomination you go to I’m going to rattle all of you with this little figure. Take a look around at your congregation the next time you attend a religious service and know this this little fact: 1 in 6 women where you are has had an abortion. I don’t care what faith you claim to be, 1 in 6 has had an abortion. FReepers don’t dare argue this fact with me I already know and have seen it personally and am not in the mood after today.
What ever your faith women have had abortions.
What ever your faith men in your church have encouraged women (wives, sisters, daughters, girlfriends) to have abortions.
The pain is there. The sin is there. The temptation is there.
Don’t sit here and argue with me just go into your faith and do something about it.
Not gonna play this game. The haters here are lying low after this weekend although reading these posts and gloating.
Just saw this post after posting. Sorry. Thank you - that’s a very wise course. The Protestants here have started their own caucus which also is very wise.
Back in the late 50s, when many Catholics, even priests began to want assimilation over every other thing, and to enjoy the great wave of prosperity with the rest of the country.
