If same-sex marriage is used to pummel religious Americans into submission, it will be a disaster.
Ive supported same-sex marriage ever since I first heard the idea. And when I became a political columnist in the early 2000sdespite being the conservative at a good-sized newspaperI was the only one at the paper (as far as I can recall) who unequivocally backed gay marriage publicly. Though I wasnt gullible enough to believe Id be persuading many readers, I was gullible enough to believe that my allies in the cause were merely concerned with equality.
As we dig out from the avalanche of half-baked platitudes about love being love and watch alleged news organizations and the White House adorn themselves in cheerful rainbows, we can look forward to the self-righteous mobs that will be defaming anyone who is reluctant to embrace the states new definition of marriage. Love is love, except when a person loves their God and follows the principles of their faith, evidently.
Do a majority of Americans who support gay marriage believe these traditionalists deserve to be treated like unrepentant Klan boosters? Of course, there will always be the obnoxious Puritan, as the quote goes, who loves God with all his soul, but hates his neighbor with all his heart...

Idiot.
Well at least now they will not be able to blame Christians for using the government to prevent them from getting married.
Wow! Dumber then advertised!
Doubts? Your conscience beginning to nag at you a little? Don’t worry; the searing of that conscience will finally begin to soothe you a little.
This is just irritating. There is no equality to something intrinsically not equal. Homosexuality is not congruent with how we humans are made. Yes people can achieve an org*sm that way. No it is not the way we are biologically made. Even if a person wants to argue it is normal (ridiculous), it produces ZERO PERCENT of our future generations. Heterosexuality produces 100%. That alone makes it apples and oranges. One should be of no interest to government. The other is of vital interest.
Hello?
But in spite of all that, the author was insanely blind to think it would not result in oppression of those who oppose. Did he read nothing of what was already happening BEFORE the court decision?
How does such a naive man get to be senior editor of anything?
That is a perfect analogy. It sounds to me like Harsanyi already regrets his support for "gay marriage" but isn't yet willing to admit it.
All one had to do was look at the “evolotion” that happened in the Episcopal Church USA. I watched it happen from a conservative parish in the San Francisco Bay Area. They kept at it. They had a mission and they never gave up. If you disagreed with the same sex marriage (in the church) you couldn’t possibly be a good and loving Christian. Christ is inclusive don’t you know?
I really do think the only defense here is to strengthen the notion that civil law and religious law are completely different things. I think that at this point that pastors and priests have the fallback position of refusing to sign ANY American court issued marriage license, let the civil officials paid to do it, do it.
At this point pastors may want to address sermons to a general audience (unless the Catholics have something clever up their sleeves), the Bible remains the same and Bible studies should be brought back to greater prominence. What are they going to do, demand an edit?! Maybe do historical background on the moral climate of Rome at the time of Jesus and the early church as I believe that does offer valuable lessons on this particular topic.
In any event to me it seems like we can do this the hard way or the easy way. There are plenty of moral issues which would be profitable to address to a general audience, would would be of great benefit to any parishioner, straight, gay, or otherwise. Being utterly obsessed with the sexual possibilities of the rest of a sleepy group of parishioners who are thinking about anything but this would rank up there in the realm of spiritual sickness.
I would just add the modifier “uninformed” in front of “idiot.” He knows nothing about progs and Marxists.
like those who didn't vote Romney....
its the EFFECT of what you do that counts.... like this shallow hollow wimp in this article, who didn't really think of his actions
Romney - The father of extinctionist marriage?
here is the problem.....there will be enough so called Christian ministers and Catholic priests and Mormon elders etc supporting homo marriage that the rest of the Bible believing Christians will be forced to comply because, you know, the “important” Christian community was for it...
David are you familiar with the concept of the useful idiot? You were used as a useful idiot by those pushing homosexual marriage. You were used to give some credence to a conservative case for homosexual marriage. You were used by people who lied to you about their real goals and true intentions if the goal of homosexual marriage was realized.
A couple of churches in my area have gone this way, one is Presbyterian, I was very persistently hit on while trying to go to Sunday school and will never go back. Another is a church where you will hear absolutely anything but the Word of God, it feels pointless and dead, why would I ever want to go back?
Caving in to PC tinkering never ends with achieving one victory.
As an aside, the last time I ordered Bible study materials they had to be shipped from the UK as they seem to have become a bit of a rarity around here.
Just another useful idiot and closet commie. Equality? my ass.
Like those who didn’t vote for Romney? And he would have been any better on the issue? Conservatives didn’t think so.
