Pope Francis Recruits Naomi Klein in Climate Change Battle

Social activist ‘surprised but delighted’ to join top cardinal in high-level environment conference at the Vatican

She is one of the world’s most high-profile social activists and a ferocious critic of 21st-century capitalism. He is one of the pope’s most senior aides and a professor of climate change economics. But this week the secular radical will join forces with the Catholic cardinal in the latest move by Pope Francis to shift the debate on global warming.

Naomi Klein and Cardinal Peter Turkson are to lead a high-level conference on the environment, bringing together churchmen, scientists and activists to debate climate change action. Klein, who campaigns for an overhaul of the global financial system to tackle climate change, told the Observer she was surprised but delighted to receive the invitation from Turkson’s office.

“The fact that they invited me indicates they’re not backing down from the fight. A lot of people have patted the pope on the head, but said he’s wrong on the economics. I think he’s right on the economics,” she said, referring to Pope Francis’s recent publication of an encyclical on the environment.

Release of the document earlier this month thrust the pontiff to the centre of the global debate on climate change, as he berated politicians for creating a system that serves wealthy countries at the expense of the poorest.

The Pope is supposed to be a religious leader, a teacher in spiritual issues, NOT a politician, or a wealth redistribution manager. I am not Catholic, if I were I would excommunicate myself.

I was.

I did.

A long time ago the “Catholic Church” took a hard turn to the left. That lean is now hard left.

No thanks.

Now - will they **finally** have their tax-exempt status revoked?

I looked up Naomi Klein. Yeesh, what a wingding. A few highlights from her wiki article:

“In a September 2004 article for Harper’s Magazine,[30] she argues that, contrary to popular belief, the Bush administration did have a clear plan for post-invasion Iraq, which was to build a completely unconstrained free market economy. She describes plans to allow foreigners to extract wealth from Iraq, and the methods used to achieve those goals.”

“In a speech in Ramallah on 27 June, she apologized to the Palestinians for not joining the BDS campaign earlier.[38] Her remarks, particularly that “[Some Jews] even think we get one get-away-with-genocide-free-card” were characterized by an op-ed columnist in the Jerusalem Post as “violent” and “unethical””

“She has encouraged the Occupy movement to join forces with the environmental movement, saying the financial crisis and the climate crisis have the same root—unrestrained corporate greed”

Mamma Mia!

Well, unless he’s the false prophet in Revelation.

The Catholic Church has not made a left turn any more than our Constitution has and for the same reason. It is an institution Men (people) run it, and they, being human, have flaws, sometimes worse than other times, but they do not change the institution itself, regardless of appearances, and what the mob wants the casual observer to believe

Just so. The Church is the “one, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church” that was founded by Christ and has continued for almost 2000 years. I’m not about to abandon it, and the Sacraments that Jesus gave to us, just because Pope Francis appears to be a jerk.

Protestants and people of good will should hope and pray that the leadership of the Church will reform itself, as it has after similar bad times in the past. Just as I hope and pray that the various Protestant churches will reform themselves, and that their members, if they are not ready to be Catholics, at least will be good Christians. Our country and our world will both be better places when things get better in its churches.

It makes no more sense for Protestants and disbelievers to wish evil on the Catholic Church than it would for Catholics to wish evil on them.

I grew up as an Episcopalian before I became Catholic, and it certainly gives me no pleasure to see all the problems that have befallen that church.

Oh please. Each fervently believes the other is going to hell. But oh no, that's not wishing evil in each other, that's preaching Jesus'doctrine of love to those choosing hell in error.

It's no wonder liberals hate Christians so much in the name of loving everyone - that's where they learned the technique.

Not true. A few sects believe that sort of thing, but it’s pretty rare. The Catholic Church always taught that God gave His grace to virtuous pagans, who did the best they knew how. And of course the Bible indicates that many virtuous Jews went to heaven.

Catholics believe there’s an essential difference between those who break away from the Church for evil or selfish reasons and those who do so because of mistaken beliefs. As a Catholic, I’ve gotten on well and worked with Evangelicals and other Protestants. And I certainly know many Protestants of different kinds who are tolerant of and happy to work with Catholics.

Catholics do not wish ill on anyone, and they do not wish fervently that another religion goes to hell.

I cannot speak for other religions in this regard.

You can SAY anything about the Church. It doesn’t make it true.

“the latest move .... to shift the debate on global warming.”

I believe the Bolsheviks said, “We’re shifting the debate.” as they marched the Mensheviks into the Lubyanka dungeons.

I’m in agreement with you. I had serious concerns about Francis from the start and he’s only served to reinforce my original concerns while adding more.

Well, she is from a radical, secular Jewish background and is a high-profile propagandist. She’s the female Michael Moore (without the extra 200 pounds). Anyone soft-pedaling the Pope’s global warming, anti-capitalist totalitarianism is a fool or a liar.
