The First 10 Popes of the Catholic Church
St. Peter's List ^ | December 17, 2012 | SPL Staff

Posted on 06/20/2015 12:42:46 PM PDT by rwa265

Listers, we’ve catalogued the first ten Vicars of Christ for the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Save the information on our first pope – St. Peter – all the information presented is taken from the Catholic Encyclopedia and links for further reading are provided.

1. Pope St. Peter (32-67)

St. Peter held a primacy amongst the twelve disciples that earned him the title “Prince of the Apostles.” This primacy of St. Peter was solidified when he was appointed by Jesus to the Office of the Vicar – demonstrated by Christ giving St. Peter the Keys to the Kingdom. To understand St. Peter, one must first understand Christ and the Church Christ came to establish. Jesus is the “Son of David” and his life and ministry fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies of the New Davidic Kingdom and New Jerusalem; hence, we look to the historic kingdom of King David as a guide to the New Davidic Kingdom. King David had a vicar that ruled his kingdom when David was absent and the sign of authority for this vicar was the keys of the kingdom. In the New Davidic Kingdom, Christ the Son of David gave the keys to his Vicar to guide the Kingdom until the return of Christ – we now refer to this vicar as “the pope.” SPL has written extensively on these issue in http://www.stpeterslist.com/45/10-biblical-reasons-christ-founded-the-papacy/ and http://www.stpeterslist.com/94/13-biblical-reasons-st-peter-was-the-prince-of-the-apostles/.

Elsie, do you have that list handy? Apparently NYer has missed it the last four times you’ve posted it and does not realize the founders of his religion have also agreed that the profession of Peter is what Jesus referred to when He stated upon ‘this’ rock I will build My Church. I can understand why catholics must keep that deception afloat, because without it they are missing a leg of the stool they use to proclaim their institution as the only true church.

I think you have it right. The Bread of Life Discourse in John 6 is the theological preparation Jesus gave the Apostles in view of the coming Last Supper --- as recorded by John.

My point was that even if a teaching or an event is covered by some NT writers, but not by others, it doesn't mean it was unimportant.

Continuing the sham of Peter being ‘the’ rock also excludes the real rock upon which Jesus has built His Church. Faith in Whom God has sent for our Salvation is the reason the profession of Peter is the Rock. I could post more than a dozen scripture passages where it is Faith that is cited as the means of Salvation, faith in The Christ, The Son of The Living God, but apparently these so perfectly catechized catholics don’t bother to read with open hearts those passages because such truth would shake their dependence upon the catholic system for working toward worthiness for salvation. we saw it blatantly in Mormonism and now it is being exposed at the heart of Catholicism. ... And these of that religion don’t like light, do they!

Oh, I see. I think I’m so much into trying to reconstruct my computer that I didn’t read it carefully enough. Please forgive me.

According to a study released in September by Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion, evangelical Protestants are a whopping eight times more likely than Catholics to read the Bible on a weekly basis....we tip our hats to our separated brothers and sisters in Christ for their zeal for the Word of God. -- from the National Catholic Register article Get Cracking, Catholics!

They don't need the bible they have their own Prophet and they get to eat Christ ...why would they need to know God, His Character, or His promises ??? .. They are "the one true religion ya know "

Read John 6 for meaning at a level deeper than the life of the body which physical bread sustains.

Jesus took the minds focused upon bread and manna and brought them to the Life He brings, spiritual life. This Life is for the spirit of man, not his belly. The Feast of weeks is performed with :EAVENED bread, two loaves. The Leaven of God is The Holy Spirit.

Jesus said as much to these who were questioning Him following the miracle of the bread feeding the thousands. And shortly after that lesson tot he masses, He explained the contrast leaven of the Pharisees to his disciples. They stumbled at first, focusing upon bread which they had forgotten to bring along.

It is by faith that This Life from God, The Leaven of God's Spirit, literally GOD'S LIFE as the indwelling Holy Spirit, brings life to the dead spirit of man. When Jesus instituted the remembrance of what He was about to do for us all, they were sitting at Passover, with unleavened bread, in remembrance of so much spiritual reality from their nation's past!

It was the blood of the lamb slain for their deliverance from the death angel they ate the Passover meal over. The blood of the lamb slain was spread upon the doorpost and lintel for their atonement.

God had commanded all the way back in Genesis 6 not to eat the blood, for the life is in the blood, and the blood would be for the atonement. But the Jewish High Priest entering once each year had to perform this ritual of atonement in the Temple so that BY FAITH the Israelites would have atonement for their sins against the law of sin and death.

Jesus fulfilled that law of sin and death and has entered the Holy of Holies ONCE FOR ALL FOREVER. Taking the Eucharist is a remembrance of this once fore all forever, not a repetition of it. Jesus ended the repetition with His perfect Precious blood upon the Mercy Seat, Once For All, Forever.

Prots love to act like 12 year olds. I have already document my curricula vitae on several occasions. Still waiting on the prots to even say what denomination they call their own.

While you may believe with all your heart that Jesus was not referring to Peter as the rock, there are those who believe with all their heart that Jesus was referring to Peter as the rock.

And I believe if I jump off the Empire State bold. I will float like a feather down to the ground...yep thats it

Believing something does not make it true ...Just wanted to let you know that... The Mormons believe that they will be gods with they own planet.. they believe that with all their heart.. .and the JWs believe that jesus was really Michael the archangel ...they believe that with all their hearts... and the Muslims believe that they get a bevy of Virgins for being a Martyr for Allah... and spiritualists believe they can bring the dead to talk to them,.

They all believe with all their hearts.....problem is......

Jer 17;9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

If you ask someone to prove their academic background then expect it to be asked of you. If you can’t or won’t answer....then the playground rule applies.

Then why did Jesus name the guy Peter? In order to say "Thou art the Rock, --- but wait, no, not really, you're not the Rock. Um... let me start this sentence over"?
How about "Thou art NOT Peter, but hey, thanks for the profession of faith, 'cuz that's the Rock... did'ja get that, Matthew?"
Too bad Matthew missed the do-over..

Ummmmmm the question is WHEN did Jesus rename Peter ??

John 1 35Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; 36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. 40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. 42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

Prots love to act like 12 year olds.

As opposed to the frequent postings of ad hominem and unrelated garbage from supposedly educated Roman Catholic cultists.

It is necessary to know denominations, if you have a plan to denigrate by association. That seems to be a popular RC cultist attack plan. In reality, it exposes their lack of credible retort or apologetics.

I would hate to admit such a high degree of education being represented by such puerile activity! Yet, here we see a master of that tactic. Nothing, followed by nothing more... Blah, blah, blah is the standard RC response!
