Listers, weve catalogued the first ten Vicars of Christ for the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Save the information on our first pope St. Peter all the information presented is taken from the Catholic Encyclopedia and links for further reading are provided.
1. Pope St. Peter (32-67)
St. Peter held a primacy amongst the twelve disciples that earned him the title Prince of the Apostles. This primacy of St. Peter was solidified when he was appointed by Jesus to the Office of the Vicar demonstrated by Christ giving St. Peter the Keys to the Kingdom. To understand St. Peter, one must first understand Christ and the Church Christ came to establish. Jesus is the Son of David and his life and ministry fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies of the New Davidic Kingdom and New Jerusalem; hence, we look to the historic kingdom of King David as a guide to the New Davidic Kingdom. King David had a vicar that ruled his kingdom when David was absent and the sign of authority for this vicar was the keys of the kingdom. In the New Davidic Kingdom, Christ the Son of David gave the keys to his Vicar to guide the Kingdom until the return of Christ we now refer to this vicar as the pope. SPL has written extensively on these issue in http://www.stpeterslist.com/45/10-biblical-reasons-christ-founded-the-papacy/ and http://www.stpeterslist.com/94/13-biblical-reasons-st-peter-was-the-prince-of-the-apostles/.

Not true, the Rc wasn't around till Constantine.
Hey, I found my ping list in my Recycle Bin!
God bless.
Do you read the Bible?
Christ asked Peter three times if he loved him and then he announced that the Church would be built on him as rock and he gave him the keys to the kingdom.
*8Not true, the Rc wasn’t around till Constantine.**
This is a misconception that many non-Catholics entertain.
Also your use of RC is mistaken because there are many rites of the Catholic Church. In the United States most celebrate Mass in the Latin Rite.
Please read up on the truth.
How any times must you be shown something before it sinks in? You have been shown numerous times that the Rock Jesus referred to was the PROFESSION of Peter, not Peter. Even the fathers of the catholic church have said it yet you are unable to hear it! Amazing.
You can’t even get the sequence of Bible scenes in the correct order, how can you comprehend the writing of the Bible or the fathers of your religion?
Whoa.....where is this title that he "earned" found anywhere in the Word??
That's the problem that Roman Catholics have with Protestants -- we DO read the Bible. And we call out the error foisted on the world by Rome.
Peter was rebuked openly by Paul. For error. Christ gave the keys to the Kingdom to the Disciples... all of them.
Roman Catholicism started with Constantine... not before. And it's stood in error since then.
Hoss
So again....the ECFs are not in 100% agreement....yet this never stops Rome.
Do you read the Bible?
In the same chapter Jesus calls Peter Satan and the supposed word play (Petros) is an assertion, not based on the scriptures, and highly unlikely as we have biblical evidence that Jesus spoke Aramaic and Hebrew. We do not have any evidence that Jesus spoke Greek.
the Rc wasn’t around till Constantine.
Perhaps not, but Nero et.al. were slaughtering Christians long before Constantine. And this in no way detracts from Peter’s role in the establishment of the Church.
Wow! Now I understand why the Sunnis and the Shia are at each others’ throats. So much anger here over St. Peter’s role.
Constantine wasn't all that important. He was pope from 708 to 715 and was remembered as "a remarkably affable man," but he's mostly forgotten now, even though the Emperor Justinian II treated him with honor when he visited Constantinople. He resisted the next emperor's attempt to revive the Monothelete heresy.
In the 3rd century there was a dispute at Antioch with two men both claiming to be the rightful bishop. The emperor Aurelian decided to recognize as legitimate the one accepted by the bishop of Rome. That shows that the pope's influence doesn't start with the emperor Constantine. Aurelian was a pagan but got called on because there was property at stake in the dispute.
Thanks for pinging everyone.
God bless you, too.
Sweet!
Luv reading this kind of article...
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Thanks for your postings. Peter was the only Apostle renamed. The perpetual rock to handle the keys. The Church. The gates of hell sure lasted longer than Peter.
No, it is not anger. It is contending for the faith.
Jesus is the Rock not a man.
LOL do you?
...The Church should combat widespread "Biblical illiteracy" among the Catholic faithful, Archbishop Eterovic said...
-- from the thread Synod to Focus on Proper Use of Scripture....The flip side of this embarrassment is the presumption among many Catholics that they get the Bible at Mass, along with everything else they need for their spiritual lives....Given that exposure, many think they do not need anything else. As Mr. McMahon put it, The majority still say you go to Mass, you get your ticket punched, and thats it for the week.
-- from the thread A Literate Church: The state of Catholic Bible study todayAccording to a study released in September by Baylor Universitys Institute for Studies of Religion, evangelical Protestants are a whopping eight times more likely than Catholics to read the Bible on a weekly basis....we tip our hats to our separated brothers and sisters in Christ for their zeal for the Word of God.
