Contrary to Popular Outrage, Pope Francis Didn’t Call Mahmoud Abbas ‘an Angel of Peace’

Another day, another misquote.
I hate to get into a public disagreement with a colleague here, but the outrage du jour seems to be based on a translation that may or may not be deliberately wrong. As the BBC and the Associated Press are at the root of it, I’m leaning towards the former.
A BBC reporter in the room claimed that Pope Francis said “you are an angel of peace” while presenting a gift (which is Vatican tradition) to Abbas.
The Vatican reporter for the Italian newspaper La Stampa has it differently:
As is tradition with heads of State or of government, Francis presented presented a gift to the Palestinian leader, commenting: May the angel of peace destroy the evil spirit of war. I thought of you: may you be an angel of peace.
Calling someone something and exhorting him to be that something are two entirely different things.
What has befuddled me and several of my conservative friends who are also devout Roman Catholics is the willingness of our conservative friends to take news about this pope at face value from MSM outlets that aren’t trusted for anything else.
I can tell you this: MSM reporting on the Vatican, the Church or whomever is pope at the time almost always needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The media has an obsession with Francis because they’ve convinced themselves that he’s the pope who will make the Church become a gay marriage, abortion loving free-for-all. This, even though barely six months into his tenure, Francis excommunicated a priest for supporting women priests and gay marriage.
As with any political agenda supported by the MSM, it is willing to bend facts to shoehorn stories into the narrative.

The Pope giving a gift to a man who tries daily to do whatever he can to ensure the deaths of Jews everywhere and the domination of Israel!
Don’t care what was said. The action is clear enough to me.
“We support your war against Israel.”

How many times must a person ignore a correct quote or a correct translation before we conclude they don’t want to be bothered with the facts?

"What was He thinking?!? Doesnt He know we dont associate with those people!?!" Yeah, I like how Jesus associated with the Holocaust denying, Munich massacre financiers.
Yes, who would do such a thing?

Which one will emerge as the Anti-Christ? The Pope or Obama...They’re both obvious frauds.

How many "What the Pope really meant to was" excuses does it take for people to admit they got the short end of the stick when it comes to this guy?
I have noticed that if I read the pope's words literally and take them at face value, I get fairly orthodox Catholic teachings and beliefs. As a consequence I ignore what I hear from the MSM on this guy.
Most of the criticisms I have read of this pope start from the position that what writer heard from the MSM first was right and that the writer needs to be convinced to switch his opinion upon hearing what was actually said. If instead they started from the position that the first draft of the story got things wrong and needs to be cleaned up, they would have a much easier time with this pope.

The Pope won’t emerge as the Anti-Christ, he’ll be too busy emerging as the False Prophet..

It's goofy enough to bizarrely attempt to claim that Francis
supporting and allying himself with mass murderers dedicated
to wiping out the Jews = Jesus telling a prostitute to repent. But to
to be so completely and totally ignorant of the situation in today's
Middle East is astonishingly profound ignorance. Giving the
availablity of news, one can only can only assume the ignorance is willful.

A tax collector.
I'm pretty sure he hadn't organized the 1972 Olympic Massacre.

Well, my Italian is a bit rusty (actually I only know one word in Italian - "buongiorno"), but I think Pope F. might have actually been referring him to Angel's Pizza for a good meal.

It seems you don’t have “context” as a concept. Cebu.

I'll just cite from the "best rated" response comment at
the linked story re: the question of responding to the
"What the Pope really meant to say was" du jour -
"Did he, or did he not recognize the inheritors of the
Nazi's desire to slaughter the Jews?
Is he or isn't he supporting the leftist climate agenda
that will damn billions to poverty?
If he's not being trusted, maybe the reason isn't with us (I am a Catholic as well)"
To: Tax-chick
"It seems you dont have context as a concept."
Yeah, but then again at least I understand the the concept
and context of Abbas, Hamas, "wipe Israel of the map" and
Islamic terrorism in general, so it all balances out. Or, at least,
it puts me one up in Francis.
To: LouieFisk
Rome wiped Israel - "Judea" - off the map for millennia. Jesus stood outside that. In the Lectionary for today, we see the confusion between God's sovereignty and political triumph:
When they had gathered together they asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel? He answered them, It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

My point being that ya don't wanna be on the wrong side in
that equation.
To: LouieFisk
All of us have to be on the side of “Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.” There is no winning side of “Lord, look at me, I was right about everything, I did everything right!” That’s the Pharisee side, and Jesus went after that like gangbusters.

I'll hazard a wild, way out there guess that genocide might just
somehow, maybe, might be something that Jesus would "go after".

I have not read his eco-encyclical yet, this is not a question I can answer with any actual facts.
Did he, or did he not recognize the inheritors of the Nazi's desire to slaughter the Jews?
I am uncertain what is meant by recognizing someone; however, Pope Francis said that he hoped that Abbas would be an Angel of Peace, not that he is an Angel of Peace.
Someone in the comments on the article mentions he never remembered Benedict being misunderstood. The reason is that liberals could not mishear him to support their political preferences but they can mishear Pope Francis. When liberals try to quote Pope Francis to support their own positions, conservatives appear to react by assuming that the liberals are accurately quoting Pope Francis.
I do not lose faith that the Bible is the word of God because it is misquoted and distorted by liberals and protestants, so why should I lose faith that the Pope is an orthodox Catholic because he is misquoted by liberals and a decent percentage of conservatives?
