Bishop tells TCD conference that gay rights is the justice issue of our time
A conference discussing the religious case for marriage equality has heard there will be a price to be paid by the Catholic Church for its stance in relation to the upcoming referendum.
Marriage Equality: The Religious Case for a Yes Vote took place on Saturday and was hosted by Faith in Marriage Equality at the school of ecumenics, Trinity College, Dublin.
Sociologist Dr Richard OLeary told the conference there was a danger of a smaller, more anti-gay church emerging from the public debate in relation to the referendum.
I predict there will be a price to be paid by the Catholic Church after this referendum, he said. Because of the negative stance taken by the bishops, the church as an institution could emerge as a smaller, more anti-gay, more conservative denomination. Some of the bishops might be satisfied with that outcome, but many people might feel that it would be a regrettable and avoidable outcome.
Church of Ireland bishop of Cashel, Ferns & Ossory Michael Burrows said he was supporting a yes vote in the referendum and referred to gay rights as the great justice issue of our time.

That would be a good thing.
We’re all homos now.
I don’t know, but Sodom and Gomorra come to mind. And, that is in the Bible, at least my Bible. And, words mean things.
Yup, they surely will should they adapt gay marriage.
The price will be another split in the church.
Doesn’t much matter, does it?
After all, our “Catholic” university leadership has demonstrated that they have the morals of a Clinton, and the vatican has repeatedly shown that they have a “nothing to see here, move along, move along” attitude towards child-boinking priests.
Perhaps this will be good, one of the “splits” may actually be the Catholic church I remember, and I’ll again become a member.

It’s Ireland, it would be Sodom and Glocca-morra
Riiiiiight. And in Aristotle’s day the justice issue du jour was pederasty. How’d that work out for Greece? 2500 years later and they’re hoping to get booted out of the Euro so they can manipulate their own currency again and pray that some other country which actually has influence takes up its cause as the permanent host of the summer Olympics.
Yes. There is always a price to be payed for choices. I prefer to try to follow Christ. There is a price for that choice.
Luke 9:
23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. 27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
Beat me to it.
The Gospel is open to all, but the message should never be watered down. In the end, 'dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie' will be excluded from the City of Life.
Ecclesiastes 10:1a Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour ...
And, it’s not like the Irish church is running over with attendance right now. Primarily because homosexual pedophiles were allowed into the priesthood in the past. Maybe even yet.
Liberal Prots telling Catholics what to do, sort of like Democrats telling Republicans who to nominate.
Either way, the Catholic Church will pay a price for their choices. It is far better to pay a worldly price for obeying God than to pay the eternal price for willfully disobeying God.
Mark 9:42 - And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
Telling our little ones that it's okay to disobey the Bible's infallible guidance on sexual activity (or on anything else), in a futile effort to placate the far left fringe, strikes me as a supremely bad idea. Our kids will fall short regardless of what we teach, but they will know right from wrong and the importance of putting God's will ahead of their own if we do our job, and we owe that to our children.
Sounds like God is sorting the sheep from the goats.
And the problem is?
Now that's funny.
This is a preview of the obvious next step: going after churches that refuse to perform gay weddings. The Catholic Church is going to be the big target. But all churches will be indicted. Many will cave in.
The hammer will be the removal of tax exemption for any organization that “discriminates”.
You heard it here first.
The Church of Ireland Bishop Michael Burrows MUST be GAY!!! What the HELL has happened to these Protestant sects that they are so Pro-ANAL SEX??
