The British actor will reportedly star as a conservative Italian-American pontiff in The Young Pope
Jude Law is in negotiations to play a fictional pope in a TV series about the first Italian-American pontiff in history, according to unconfirmed reports.
According to reports in the Italian media, Law is in talks to play the lead in The Young Pope, the new series by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, whose film, The Great Beauty, won an Oscar in 2014 for best film in a foreign language.
Tony Grisoni, one of the co-writers on the series, told Variety that The Young Pope will be about a conservative pope who is recruited by the Vatican in response to a growing liberal influence within the Church hierarchy.
No one, even at the Vatican, is prepared for how hard-line this American Pope really is, said Grisoni.
The Young Pope will be the first TV series directed by Sorrentino.

What about Tony Danza? He’d be great at portraying an Italian American pope!
Him or Scott Baio would be totally believable!
I’m sure they’d do a better job of playing the part of a Catholic leader than the current pope.

In before the "rabidly anti-Catholic bigot" claims!

Law is in talks to play the lead in The Young Pope Uh, Jude. I hate to break it to you, but you aren't exactly "young" anymore. Maybe if they retitled it, "The Middle Aged Pope" . . . . .

Good. I was getting worried about Jude.
I guess he finally figured out how to act his way out of that paper bag

Hmmm...cast an impeccably known British actor to play the “first American Pope”. Makes as much sense as casting Keanu Reeves to play an “old fashioned traditionalist pre-Vatican II Italian cardinal”.
Uh oh. Hope I didn’t give them any casting ideas.

By papal standards, a middle-aged Pope IS young. John Paul II was considered a spring chicken when he was elected at age 58.

Not really seeing myself getting enthused about watching this show. Of course, that applies to 98% of most new shows every tv season.

He is British, and non-Muslim, which suggests there is a better than even chance he has no real religious beliefs.
