It isn’t a scriptural requirement for a priest.
“It isnt a scriptural requirement for a priest.”
No one here is claiming it is a scriptural requirement. You asserted this: [celibacy] certainly it isnt scriptural.
Clearly Jesus says otherwise. He not only makes it clear - by His very word - that celibacy is scriptural but He commends those who choose it.
I know two married priests. They’re not that hard to find.
Define your own beliefs as much as you like. Maybe you believe Catholics spend too much time venerating the Mother of God. Fine. You're entitled to believe what you like.
But don't stand here and pretend to tell us what WE believe.
We know what we believe - we know what the Church teaches. And Mary is NOT a "goddess" and we do NOT "worship" her.
We give her all honor as the sole human being chosen to conceive, bear in her womb, and raise to adulthood God Himself. But she is not worshipped, an honor reserved to God, Father, Son & Holy Spirit.
You strain at a gnat and swallow a camel, as someone once said.
Oh OK, I’ll quit being Catholic, just on your say so. /s
The conversation you broke into was regarding this requirement for priests. You posted before you bothered to read and are blundering around.
“The conversation you broke into was regarding this requirement for priests.”
That’s not what the comment said.
“You posted before you bothered to read and are blundering around.”
Actually I read everything and made no blunders at all. I rarely do. Thus, I know celibacy is not only scriptural, but is praised by Christ in the Gospel of Matthew.
You keep blundering - not least of all by accusing me incorrectly of having blundered. I suggest you stop making blunders.
My original comment said it was a loss to not to let this group of men procreate. In light of the fact that the thread is about priests, what precisely did you think we were talking about? Since the Catholic Church has made their peace with the Anglicans and the Eastern Church they made the concession of accepting priests from these denominations (which allow priests to marry), but once a priest is ordained he is barred from marrying, which is the point. Give it up and stop acting like my cat when he jumped on the hamper with the lid up, thrashed around, fell, knocked the hamper over jumping out, then sat there looking like “I meant to do that”.

The comment I commented on. That’s what I responded to. If you don’t want to talk about that comment, fine.
“Since the Catholic Church has made their peace with the Anglicans and the Eastern Church they made the concession of accepting priests from these denominations (which allow priests to marry),”
NO! There already were married priests in the Catholic Church.
“but once a priest is ordained he is barred from marrying, which is the point.”
No! A man CHOOSES to take a vow of celibacy BEFORE he is ordained. He CHOOSES to not marry. Thus, he CANNOT marry because he CHOOSE to take a vow not to marry.
“Give it up and stop acting like my cat when he jumped on the hamper with the lid up, thrashed around, fell, knocked the hamper over jumping out, then sat there looking like I meant to do that.”
You need to “Give it up”. I have been right about EVERYTHING I have said in this thread. EVERYTHING. You were wrong. Celibacy is scriptural because Christ said so. deal with it. If you’re going to debate this issue at least get your facts straight.
Well Vlad, DON’T go forth and multiply then.
“Well Vlad, DONT go forth and multiply then.”
Jesus and Paul were celibate. There’s nothing wrong with priests imitating their choice.
The Church has suffered heartbreaking sex scandals, there is no shame in accepting the rest of what Jesus said in that passage on the subject.
“The Church has suffered heartbreaking sex scandals, there is no shame in accepting the rest of what Jesus said in that passage on the subject.”
There’s no shame in being smart enough to realize that voluntary celibacy has nothing to do with the “heartbreaking sex scandals” either.
Wow...
Thanks for that :)
