Strange Moments In Liturgical History How a Paragon of Liturgical Tradition May Have Caused Unintended Effects
Monsignor Pope Ping!
Very good points. It is true that Pio X made radical changes, and I have always thought it a little odd that the SSPX should have named itself after him.
He did some good things - introduced more frequent communion, for example, since previously most people had gone to Communion only once a year, as required - and to some extent stimulated Eucharistic devotion. But he was very much a “stroke of the pen” type of guy, and his model was (and is being) followed by some later Popes with unfortunate results.
I think it also led to the tendency to focus on the Pope as the governor, rather than the guardian, of the Faith.
