Mormon Bishop Under Fire for Harry Reid Criticism [Reid spokesman responds to Lds bishop]
AP/ABC News ^ | Nov. 8, 2014

A Mormon bishop in Los Angeles is under fire for his assertion that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is unworthy to enter the faith's temples because of his support for Democratic Party positions.

Mark Peredes' blog, titled "Good Riddance to Harry Reid, the Mormon Senate Leader," has drawn criticism from the church and Mormon Democrats.

[SNIP]

Reid spokeswoman Kristen Orthman on Saturday released a letter from a Mormon Democrat in Las Vegas to Paredes. "Our comment to this is to show you one of many comments Sen. Reid has received from his friends," Orthman said.

The letter was written by Charles Zobell, a 56-year member of the church and a former longtime editor of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Both he and his wife are lifelong Democrats.

"Your very public comments on Sen. Harry Reid, a faithful member of the Church, were outrageous and unbecoming a priesthood holder in your position of influence. In short, they were un-Christian ... You should apologize to (him) and to every LDS Democrat you have so viciously disparaged," Zobell wrote.

"I am so tired of self-righteous members of my own Church telling me I cannot be a Democrat and a good Mormon ... I cannot see how anyone can read the Book of Mormon and the New Testament and not have more compassion and charity for others. Those have been hallmarks of the Democratic Party since the days of Franklin Roosevelt and earlier," he added...

This was new info not relayed in an earlier Washington Times thread Mormon bishop: Harry Reid unworthy to enter temples> posted earlier this weekend:

No Morman who defends whorehouse Harry deserves respect.

Perhaps I should reexamine my former respect for that church.

Reid is slime.

He is of such putresence that a new number sticker should be made: Reid Happens.

I've seen numerous FR threads where FREEPERs assumed that Harry Reid was/is either...
(a) a jack mormon (an inactive Mormon)...[Btw, he's not]
(b) or some maverick Mormon well off the Mormon reservation [No, here's a man even invited to speak to the entire BYU campus in 2007]
(c) Or some faithless marginal Mormon who the Mormon church eschews and keeps at arms-length [not only can I point to the 2007 BYU speech, but I can also point out how the Mormon church officially sanctions Harry Reid as an official "home teacher" in the D.C. area].

For (b) & (c) if you don't want to take me at my word -- see the links below yourself. ********************************************************

So here's what I've said before in previous threads of years back...just slightly edited:
(1) Does BYU usually invite faithless or “jack Mormons” to speak at all-student body, all-faculty rallies? (‘Cause guess what? That’s exactly what BYU did in October 2007 – ensuring Reid spoke to over 4,000 on campus. Here’s the FReeper story on that Reid gets warm reception at BYU

From the above linked article, written by the Lds church owned Deseret News: At the end of his speech, Reid earned a standing ovation from a small percentage of the crowd and applause from the rest.

Plus, do BYU students & faculty usually applaud ALL faithless or “jack Mormons” like they did @ that BYU speech in Fall 2007?

(2) The Salt Lake Tribune ran an October 2009 article – here. Harry Reid: A Mormon in the Middle

Here were two “interesting” comments by fellow Mormons about Reid, including one from Sen. Orrin Hatch: …Orrin Hatch, says it's not fair for fellow Mormons to disparage Reid as anything but a devout Mormon..."I can personally tell you that Harry is a good member of the LDS faith and he was expressing a personal opinion that his side feels very deeply about," Hatch says

Well, there ya go. You wouldn't want to be "contentious" against the likes of faith Mormons like Sen. Hatch by calling him a liar – or mistaken – re: his eval of Reid, would you?

(3) Btw, that same Salt Lake Trib article also mentioned how ”Today, Reid, with his security escort in tow, likely will be making his home teaching rounds after his ward's three-hour service. Anyone who questions his Mormon credentials should see that, says Jim Vlock, his home-teaching companion

There ya go, yet another Mormon “testimonial” about Reid that claims he is a bonifide Mormon. (Of course, we all know how mistaken those Mormon testimonials are all the time about another Mormon leader – a Mr. Joseph Smith – so I guess Mr. Vlock can be wrong just like all the other Mormon testimonials, eh?)

Oh, and one more Mormon testimonial about Reid: LDS blog names Harry Reid as Mormon of the Year

So, given these testimonials by Harry Reid's security detail...Sen. Hatch...BYU’s speaker invite committee...The Local Lds leaders who authorize Reid to officially represent the church as a home-teacher...The Lds bloggers who named Reid as “Mormon of the Year.”...
...you see...Harry Reid is a genuine, authentic, temple recommended, bonifide, Mormon leader-in-good-standing with his church!

I thought Mormans were Pro Life? Reid is pro Abortion...

On specific voting issues, Reid has a partial pro-life voting record per National Right to Life.

(Of course, think of all the pro-abortion things he's done behind the scenes...including blocking pro-life legislation)

The Mormons I know abhor Reid.

Long ago I learned to put up with the bigotry of those who believe that the Commandments are now “suggestions.” That’s an even stranger cult.

do Utah Mormons and Arizona Mormons and Nevada Mormons support Reid?

(See article about Democrat editor of Las Vegas Review Journal ... re his entry into this controversy...he's Mormon...)

Also

The Las Vegas Review-Journal ran an article several years ago one Spring day (May 30) with this mention:

...Mormon places of worship, where those who support Reid often keep their opinions to themselves...When people try to attack him, there isn't anybody who is willing to speak up," says Richard Bunker, a prominent Mormon and strong Reid supporter who happens to be Republican. "The problem is, the people that are vocal are the ones who are opposed to him, the ones that are beating the tom-toms with the Tea Party and all of that garbage. Sometimes I have to straighten them out." Bunker, whose great-grandfather was among Mormons who founded Bunkerville in 1877…

The Demwit partisan media shill and his lifelong Demwit wife concocted a nice string of nonsequiturs to defend the mob-associated thug and crook, Harry Reid.

**I thought Mormons were Pro Life?**

That is a common misperception, remember that Mormon Bishop and Stake President (the boss over Bishops) Mitt Romney, was pro-abortion at the very time that he was excommunicating other Mormons for religious offenses, he was also anti-gun.

Here is Mitt Romney in August of 2012 after winning the GOP presidential nomination.

CBSNews.com. The transcript is below.

PELLEY: Well, the platform as written at this convention for the Republicans does not allow for exceptions on abortion with regard to the health of the mother or rape or incest. Is that where you are?

ROMNEY: No. My position has been clear throughout this campaign. I’m in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.

The Mormons I know abhor Reid.

Are those Mormons that you know the holiest of Mormons, with a Temple Recommend like Harry Reid is, or are they Mormons who are less devout like the great majority of Mormons who cannot pass the examination of faith that is given Harry Reid every two years?
