On November 4th Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke presented in Vienna the German edition of the book Remaining in the Truth of Christ that collects articles of five Cardinals. A video recording of the presentation will be published on Gloria.tv tomorrow. The gathering was organised by Una Voce Austria.
In his presentation Cardinal Burke explained, that the book is a response to the idea of Cardinal Walter Kasper, who has argued in favour of a change in what has been the constant teaching and practise of the Church concerning marriage. Kasper has so Burke - asked for dialogue and the five cardinals answered by presenting credible studies.
At the Synod on the Family Cardinal Burke saw the almost seaming forgetfulness of the Magisterium: It was as if the Church was for the first time addressing the question of marriage and teaching about it, whereas the Church has both in her doctrine and in her discipline one of the richest appreciations of marriage you will find. The cardinal mentioned Familiaris consortio of John Paul II., Humanae vitae of Pope Paul VI. and Casti cannubii, of Pope Pius XI.
Burke reminded his audience, that the Church has 2000 years old tradition: Today we act, as if we are creating the church out of nothing.
The mid-term report of the Synod was for Burke one of the saddest documents that I could imagine ever coming from the Church: Many of us were horrified with this idea that was presented in the report, that there could somehow be good elements in mortally sinful acts. This is impossible.
Furthermore Cardinal Burke criticised a breakup between doctrine and discipline: One of the most insidious ideas in the presentation of Cardinal Kasper and the discussions of the Synod is that: Yes we uphold the doctrine of the Church with......

Not a catholic, but Burke gets it. I wish he would have quoted Scripture though.
Perhaps this is why those committed to the primacy of the Scriptures don't issue such documents. No question, goofy characters like Osteen, McLaren, Bell make equally ridiculous claims, but these too are a product of abandoning the Book.
Great point.
Yes, all those sola scripture Protestant churches have done so well in maintaining Christian moral teachings. Oh, wait
That's a nice fantasy but it's quite untrue.
Their take on Scripture is simply different from yours. They read the same Scriptures as you but interpret and understand them differently.
Which brings us to the point....who are you to contradict them? Why does your theology carry any more gravitas than theirs? Who appointed you the custodian of Scriptural propriety?
Authority.....it always comes back to authority.
They (and the remainder of the Protestant universe) have not "abandoned the Book". They've abandoned the apostolic tradition which is essential for its understanding.
Authority.....it always comes back to authority."
A common, but errant, RCC conclusion. For example, if the pope said ex cathedra, "Jump off this ledge." What gives you the right to decide what he meant? If he says, "Well, I meant for you to go to the edge and leap off." What gives you the right to decide what "leap" means?
You RCs do this all the time. You claim we biblicists use YOPIOS, but you do, too. You listen to a remark made by your goofy organization, THEN you interpret it (personally, I might add) to mean, "Oh, I should genuflect, or say a paternoster, or eat this candle." Whatever...you interpret the command. And, you use ORDINARY HERMENEUTICS to interpret what you believe they are getting at.
We biblicists simply reach behind your faulty organization to an authority which predates them, and thus trumps them with truth...understood using the same techniques you use to understand your bathrobe boys. We are the custodians of Scripture...and so are you, but your group just won't read it plainly the way they want you to read them. Sorry, Marshmallow, try another argument.
He just did, but you didn't read it or understand the point.
Certainly I can. Because normal hermeneutics (the hermeneutics you used to understand what I am writing this very moment) does not yield a "gospel" of "capped teeth smiles and wavy hair are the blessings of Jesus who really, really wants you to be successful in your passion." Think about it...
Thank you.
No problem.
Not to the "fomenters of coprophagia!"
Osteen says it does.
Who are you to contradict him?
How do you know he does? Is that YOPIOS?
