The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal have announced that Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., has died at the age of 81.
The co-founder of the order passed away on October 3rd at 11 PM, the vigil of the feast of St. Francis.
The Cardinal Newman Society reported on their facebook page earlier this week that Father Groeschel had taken a fall and reinjured the same arm that was hurt in his accident ten years ago. One of his brother friars, Father Glenn Sudano, said that Father Groeschel was in much pain.
The Friars were founded in 1987 by Father Groeschel and seven other Capuchin friars: Father Stan Fortuna, Father Robert Stanion, Father Glenn Sudano, Father Bob Lombardo, and Father Andrew Apostoli.

Groeschel Moved Many With His Sincere Faith, Towering Intellect, Passionate Preaching, and Commitment to the Poor _ Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, beloved priest and preacher, died on October 3, 2014, the vigil of the Feast of St. Francis, after complications with an ongoing illness. He was 81.
Fr. Benedict was a founder of the Community of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFR), a reform community started in 1987 by eight Capuchin Friars based in New York City. A priest and psychologist, he was director of Trinity Retreat House in Larchmont, New York, and also taught Pastoral Psychology for many years at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie. Fr. Benedict was a popular writer, preacher, retreat master, and evangelist on Catholic television. His greatest joy was serving the poor and underprivileged. Founder of St. Francis House and Good Counsel Homes, he also served as chaplain at Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry for 14 years.

A great man. I’ll miss him.
RIP good and faithful servant. My Favorite story was the one he told about the time he and two other priests were arrested outside an abortion clinic for praying. The older priest was around 90 and the police officers were afraid to put cuffs on him.
RIP Father. I loved his show.
RIP. I got to meet him once. It was a pleasure.
A good man in a bad time. He will be sorely missed, but I suppose it was time for him to go. I suspect that he will soon be looking down with the other saints from Heaven and continuing to do good.
St. Francis actually died on the evening of October 3, 1226, so Fr. Groeschel died on the anniversary.
May God grant you eternal rest Father Groeschel. I enjoyed every one of his books. He truly was blessed with the gift of wisdom.

Father Groeschel’s book on dealing with the death of a loved one helped me cope with my two brothers passing away within 6 months of each other. I have read a lot of his books and he will be sorely missed.
