Victoria Osteen, wife of megachurch preacher and New York Times bestselling author Joel Osteen, is now facing withering criticism online for a viral video clip in which she is shown telling congregants at Lakewood Church that obedience, worship and church attendance is not for God but themselves.
"I just want to encourage every one of us to realize when we obey God, we're not doing it for GodI mean, that's one way to look at itwe're doing it for ourselves, because God takes pleasure when we're happy," she said in the 36-second clip posted on YouTube, with her husband smiling at her side in approval. "That's the thing that gives Him the greatest joy "
"So, I want you to know this morning: Just do good for your own self. Do good because God wants you to be happy," she continued. "When you come to church, when you worship Him, you're not doing it for God really. You're doing it for yourself, because that's what makes God happy. Amen?" the clip ended as congregants cheered.
Erick Erickson, politicly conservative blogger and editor-in-chief of the blog site RedState.com, summed up his reaction to Mrs. Osteen's pronouncement in a quote from the 1995 movie "Billy Madison."
"What you've just said is one of the most insanely, idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent, response, were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. May God have mercy on your soul," it ended.

But you’d hit it....LOL.
What about those martyred for their faith? Should they do “what makes them happy” instead of standing for their faith?
This teaching justifies the argument used by adulterers, “but God wants us to be happy!”
Once I was assured there were no guns or knives in the bedroom and/or house, sure I would. :)
If you can’t do good for your own sake, then you won’t do it for anyone else’s.
Amen.
Guess that leaves mrs p6 out....:<)
There's a lot of truth to that, and I've read Ayn Rand making the same point.
Everything has a payoff for us. Everything, good or bad, gives us something we want. Otherwise, it wouldn't be in our lives.
Even if the reward is only the feeling we get, it still pays us too.
agree with you, don’t see what’s so controversial.
The important thing is did she get ripped about this statement by her husband?
You really think so?
the whole book of Job addresses the issue.
“Vicky says lots of things when she’s not cussing out 1st class flight attendants”
That’s quite a stretch. Criticize what she just said, but she was not even accused of cussing said stewardess. The stewardess was a serial lawsuit filer who was looking to hit the lottery and lost.
The all about me, here and now croud is one that begins at birth...
For most, it ends at the grave...
That is why what Messiah taught and lived is so counter to the sinful world.
Because this life isn’t about us, here or now..
It is about Him, His Kingdom and spending eternity in His Kingdom with Him.
But hey, the olsteens have received their rewards..no arguing their beliefs have made them well off..
Well I'm not a member of his congregation but I enjoy listening to him. A lot of people here don't like him. I do, so what?
That said my IQ is over 160-165 Stanford-Binet and over 135-140 on the California scale.
What's yours?

Besides the man burns on The Playa soon.

A reminder to folks who don’t know about this incident.

EXCERPT:
Continental Airlines flight attendant Maria Johnson testified that Victoria Osteen grew increasingly agitated and pushed her co-worker Sharon Brown, though the flight attendants had remained professional and reassured her a crew had been called to clean the spill, which was about the size of a 50-cent piece.
“She was demanding that attention be given to her immediately,” Johnson said. She added that Victoria Osteen kept saying: “This is ridiculous. I’m a first-class passenger.”
Brown is suing Victoria Osteen, alleging that she threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the breast before the start of a 2005 flight to Vail, Colo.
Johnson confirmed Brown’s claims that Victoria Osteen became so upset she tried to get into the cockpit and had to be physically restrained.
“She took Sharon by the shoulders and pushed her out of the way. Sharon stumbled,” Johnson testified.
“so he could get his new mega church zoning approved”
If you’re going to be critical, do it with facts, not with something you pull out of your nether regions. There is no such thing as zoning in Houston
If I give you a poison that tastes great... does that negate the fact that it will still kill you? Does dying from drinking poison sound like it will make you happy? even though you might have enjoyed momentarily the flavor upon tasting it?
Such it is with many sins. Momentary, fleeting, happiness at the cost of a lifetime of misery.
I don't know how Victoria Osteen meant what she said, but it seems to fit in with what my teacher said.
Most I know who go to Church go because they get something out of it, and go to another if they don't or stop going altogether if they can't find one where they do.
Where's the trespass to forgive in that?
The serial lawsuit filer lost her civil lawsuit by the way
