Tom Petty says that no one has interpreted Jesus Christ’s teaching more incorrectly than Christians, as he was asked to explain the history behind his new song “Playing Dumb.”
In an interview with Billboard, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer explained his inspiration behind the song, which will be featured as a bonus cut on the accompanying vinyl release of “Hypnotic Eye.”
“Catholics, don’t write me,” Mr. Petty said. “I’m fine with whatever religion you want to have, but it can’t tell anybody it’s OK to kill people, and it can’t abuse children systematically for God knows how many years.”
“Playing Dumb” mourns the victims of sex abuse within the Catholic church, and takes aim at the major financial settlements that were awarded to some victims, Billboard reported.
“If I was in a club, and I found out that there had been generations of people abusing children, and then that club was covering that up, I would quit the club,” Mr. Petty told Billboard. “I wouldn’t give them any more money....

Tom Petty has not been part of most people’s lives since the first Clinton Administration. Most the millineals have never heard of him. He should worry too much about causing a big dust-up. It was a safe bet that he would get a microphone shoved in his face once the reporters knew Tom would be bashing Catholics in particular, Christians in general. I guess he finally found his niche in this day and age.
I wonder which casino buffet he was in when this interview took place?
I wonder whether Tom has the stones to publicly say those things about Islam, where they’re at least as applicable.

I have taught guitar for over 15 years. The kids ALWAYS want to play Classic Rock. They love the Blues, the Beatles, the Stones, The WHO, Pink Floyd, The Dead, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, and some more recent artists like Green Day and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The more Country-Style kids like Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, and The Allman Brothers.
Never, not ONCE, in 15 YEARS has anyone requested that he or she learn a song by Tom Petty.
I think that is a significant assessment of Petty’s relevance.
