A little something for the weekend.
Over at Real Clear Religion, Nicholas G. Hahn III has a slideshow of the ugliest churches in the world. They represent several denominations, but the vast majority are – you guessed it – Roman Catholic.
Below are just a few of these architectural miscarriages, all of them Catholic. See the rest here.
Kind of strange attending a church, where upon seeing the structure you think to yourself
“What the Hell is that?”
Or something that kids would design with building blocks.
No wonder people do not go to church. That is very depressing.
This is a photo I took of it looking out to sea:
Years ago there was a wonderful project underway to build a massive statue of Christ (similiar to the one in Rio) to on the high bluff downtown, but the Libs finally voted it down.
Ugliest church in NY is the building that replaced the one my father knew as his boyhood parish: St John the Evangelist. It’s better known today as 1011 First Avenue, headquarters of the NY Archdiocese. It had the misfortune of sitting on prime midtown real estate.
My own Church looks like the Brady Bunch's living room. Very ugly, although not quite as ugly as the ones in the original post.
My first thought of this one was a WWII German bunker on the Atlantic Wall that was partly renovated into a church.
Junkhenge?
The first has a striking resemblance to a WWII bunker.
This site mocks modern architecture - in a funny way

The earlier entries, when it first started, are hilarious.
But I'd like to offer this former Episcopal Cathedral in Michigan. The diocese was so broke, they had to sell the place.
The website I found it on declares it Giant Dead Spider, a/k/a Far And Away The Ugliest Church Building In The Entire History Of Christianity From The Ascension Of Christ Into Heaven Until The Present Day.
Humm. A manta ray with the Kremlin growing on its back....
So, where in the Bible does it say that a church shouldn't look like a hippopotamus?
Locutus; Mouthpiece of the Borg.
“Resistance is futile! We will assimilate you!”
I can’t identify the second one, but the first looks like a multi furnace Crematorium...disturbing!
That’s what I thought, I went to the website, and that one is located in France. I wonder if the retrofitted an old German fortification?
It looks like something unfinished; Like an upside down table...like factories with chimneys compressed into a New York public school building....like Blake’s “grim mills” with infernal machinery in the bell tower? I guess we can tell by the Red Doors that its an Episcopal “Cathedral.”
I looked it up as well. It is deep within France, plus the architect had a fascination with Germany bunkers from WWII.
