[Cardinal] Tagle Tells Priests: Don’t Say ‘Good Morning’ During Mass

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle asked priests to do away with their habit of greeting their parishioners “good morning” during Mass, saying the expression “the Lord be with you” is already sufficient.

“With all due respect, my brother-priests, I do not see the need for saying ‘good morning’ and similar greetings when God’s real presence in the Holy Eucharist alone suffices,” he said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

“Is not the expression ‘The Lord be with you’ more than enough?” added Tagle.

Oh good grief! It was joke.

Then I apologize. It didn't look like a joke from this side of the screen.

Another important issue addressed while abortion funders and supporters line up for communion.

I hear ya, morph. But the way I figure it,any move in favor of strengthening discipline and fidelity to canon law, is a step in the right direction, and will positively influence discipline and fidelity across the board.

If a Cardinal can't even require obedience from his own clergy on rubrics, they sure won't respect him when he tackles "the weightier matters of the law."

Besides, this is Tagle of Manila, not O'Malley of Boston. Tagle vigorously opposed the Philippines Reproductive Health Bill, which unfortunately passed despite his opposition. Then he publicly denounced Cafeteria Catholics in the Philippines as "enemies of the Church," especially "those who claim to follow Jesus Christ but reject Catholic doctrine on the sanctity of human life and natural law" --- here he's referring to abortion, contraception, homosexuality and related offenses.

Whether he's applying Canon 915 I do not know, but he's definitely there with 916.

I am only making one point.

The first mass was local language and if you like Latin, that’s fine, but it was not “original.”

On the substance of his quoted remarks, I must say "good for him." It's not that there's anything "intrinsically wrong" about saying "Good morning" at the start of Mass, it's just that it's so vapid.

I agree. I can't recall hearing it however.

Amen! I wish they would require everyone before and right after Mass to SHUT UP! It disturbs my peace!

There was this one priest, we called him Fr. Batman, he did kind of look like Adam West, but I digress. His homilies would have been great if he’d have stopped about a third of the way through.

I think you meant this for another FReeper. I didn’t say anything about Latin.

We had a priest like that once! I loved him. He had a thick Irish brogue and I really had to focus to understand what he was saying. No matter the topic, he was always thought provoking but was rarely longer than 2.5 minutes, and never, ever, more than 4 minutes. I miss him!

We had a new priest one morning and it was the little ones morning for Mass. He starts off and I truly felt sorry for him. He was from Poland, he sounded like the count on Sesame Street. There was some giggling. He was awesome though. Did great homilies as well.

actually complaints directed at the church for this priest cracking jokes at all times of the mass, including during the consecration or before agnus dei, go unanswered.

We’re just supposed to put up with it, he’s also famous for gay retreats. Its a bad franciscan order!

Get everyone you can to pester the Bishop. Order priests serve at their discretion.

At daily Mass, the sermon is often omitted! One of the best parts about being Catholic.

At church I liked the Gospel Music one of the best parts about being a Tennessee Hillbilly :>}

Ain't dat right Miz Mull? Thats right J.Bazzel.
{last comment not directed to you personally} A few local Freepers will likely get a kick out it though. The Lord works through many indeed.
