In 2012, the average New York Jew looks a little less like Jerry Seinfeld and a little more like Tevye the Milkman.
New Yorks Jews are poorer, less educated and more religious than they were 10 years ago, according to a landmark new study of the citys Jewish population.
Theyre also less liberal: More than half of the Jews in New York City live in Orthodox or Russian-speaking homes, both of which lean heavily conservative.
The study, conducted by UJA-Federation of New York, counted 1.5 million Jews in New York City, Long Island and Westchester, up from 1.4 million just 10 years ago. That growth is almost entirely due to a huge surge in New Yorks Orthodox population, which rose by more than 100,000 people over the past decade.
Related N.Y. Jewish Population Grows to 1.5M: Study U.S. Jewish Population Pegged at 6 Million 'The Era of the So-Called Jewish Vote Is Over' The numbers point to a seismic shift in what it means to be a New York Jew as Manhattans Jewish population shrinks and Brooklyns explodes, and as people disaffiliate from the more liberal Jewish denominations.
Source: UJA-Federation of New YorkIn the five boroughs of New York City itself, 40% of Jews currently identify as Orthodox.
The fast-shifting figures promise looming changes in how Jewish political power is wielded in New York, and in the relative influence of the citys long-standing non-Orthodox institutions.
These trends are poised to accelerate. While one-third of New York-area Jews are Orthodox today, six out of 10 Jewish children in the New York area live in Orthodox homes. Hasidic children alone constitute 37% of the areas Jewish children.
We have a community that is large, that is growing, that is diverse and that is challenged by poverty, by elements of disengagement, and also strengthened by diversity, by growing areas of Jewish involvement, said Steven M. Cohen, a leading sociologist of the Jewish community and one of the reports three authors.
The $1.7 million study is the largest of its kind ever undertaken in the United States, according to its sponsors. Researchers conducted 6,000 telephone interviews with Jewish households, randomly selected using a variety of methods.
(This reporters mother sat on a 22-member advisory board that approved the design of the survey in the fall of 2010. She has had no involvement in the study over the past year and a half.)
The surveys findings pose an array of major challenges to the citys Jewish establishment. The survey found among New York Jews fast-rising levels of poverty that appear to be unparalleled in recent history. Researchers also found a steep drop in affiliation among non-Orthodox Jews, and low levels of support among Orthodox Jews for the institutions that the non-Orthodox have long dominated. The survey also identified demographic trends that could have consequences for how New York Jews political interests are defined.
Less Liberal
Taken together, New York Citys Orthodox and Russian-speaking Jewish communities comprise 56% of the citys Jewish population.
The newfound dominance of those communities, both of which are more politically conservative than other Jewish groups, could challenge the notion that the New York Jewish vote is a liberal vote or even a Democratic vote.
The Russians are not Democrats, and the Hasidim are not necessarily Democrats, said Hank Sheinkopf, a conservative Democratic political strategist. When somebody figures out how to put the Russians and the ultra-Orthodox together theyre going to come up with an atomic bomb in Democratic politics in New York State.
For years the GOP controlled the Senate and rats the Assembly, so they compromised on redistricting, a rat gerrymander could end GOP chances in the Senate, that’s why taking back control in 2010 was so important.
GOP holds many seats that vote rat statewide, at least recently, if a Republican wins statewide he carries those seats.
That shows a big difference between New York and Illinois. There are pockets of GOP voters in NYC, in places like like Staten Island. I can't imagine any of Romney's "best districts" in Illinois were within Chicago city limits. In fact, I'd be surprised if he won a single Chicago ward or senate district. Bush won only 1 ward out of 50 (Ward 41), and that was the "traditional GOP ward" with a Republican alderman and state senator, and he only won it by like 52% or something (I think the GOP state senator got 63% in that ward, so Bush ran behind)
And when it comes to the city vote by religious breakdown, I was arguing with an anti-Catholic freeper who said the protestant vote in Chicago is probably more GOP friendly than the Catholic vote and makes up the bulk of Republican voters in the city. I'd say its the other way around, since most of the protestant majority areas of the city would probably be black neighborhoods (heavily Baptist) and they gave Obama more than 95%+ of the vote. Romney did much better in white Irish Catholic neighborhoods like Mt. Greenwood (ward 23, Romney got 30% of the vote) You can see the totals here:

As for the Jewish vote in Chicago, I don't think there are many Orthodox Jews within Chicago city limits. I'm guessing the "overall" Jewish vote in Chicago went overwhelmingly RAT, but that differs little from the city as a whole.
In local elections, the numbers do compute.
"The Klan terrorized black Americans through murders and public floggings; relief was granted only if individuals promised not to vote for Republican tickets, and violation of this oath was punishable by death," he said. "Since the Klan targeted Republicans in general, it did not limit its violence simply to black Republicans; white Republicans were also included." (emphasis added)
Didn't realize that Romney supposedly lost Staten Island as a whole because of the hurricane, which one would assume kept a lot of middle class homeowners from voting. Romney's popular vote on SI was an amazing 23% less than McCain's four years before. And his statewide vote was about a half million less than McCain's. Aside from the hurricane, Romney's failure to campaign in New York and in next-door NJ, and perhaps shenanigans in vote counting other Democrat cheating, contributed toward his losing the state by an incredible nearly 2 to 1 margin to an Obama candidacy which garnered about a half million votes in NY less than in '08 and several million votes less nationally than in '08.
Weird. First time in American history that a president was re-elected nationally to a second term with a smaller popular vote than for his first term!
Aren’t these the Kossites’ presidential results by IL state legislative districts? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pRqwQbRV5vfiEamXJn8jstiueCnjembRxXJNbtVTjJc/edit#gid=662607154
I don't think you read the article. It is Conservative Republican Orthodox Jews who are about 10% of the population that are breeding like Mosquito's while the libs are in complete demographic meltdown. The Orthodox due to their fertility now make up 40% of the population in NYC where they are mainly located at. The Othodox children are now 75% of the Jewish population in NYC.
And more power to them - But there is a reason why NE Republicans cannot get elected in Dixie, the Heartland, and the West...
“Senate candidate Hillary Clinton got 1,359 votes out of 1,369 cast in New Square, NY, after Bill Clinton pardoned four Hassidic men who were convicted of fraud of over $30 million.”
“Yes, definitely a quid pro quo. In a just world, the Clintons should have been convicted for exchanging pardons for votes. It’s obvious that the Hasidim wouldn’t have voted over 99% HRC if that dirty deal wasn’t made.”
I don’t think anyone pretends that the 2000 vote in New Square was anything other than a quid pro quo (with the local rabbi asking people to vote for Hillary because she got them the pardon). New Square voted 99% Republican in 1998, and would vote 99% Republican in 2002.
Indeed, must have just added IL, wasn’t there last time I looked.
It appears they aren’t finished, unless something is wrong with my browser (possible) I can only see up to district 5
I remember Perica carried 12 wards when he ran against Stroger. He did well enough in the city to win, but not well enough in suburban cook.
They have the p[residential voting data for all 59 state senate districts and all 118 state house districts in IL. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pRqwQbRV5vfiEamXJn8jstiueCnjembRxXJNbtVTjJc/edit#gid=662607154
Here, I posted the results; the formatting will be a little off here, with the Romney vote total, Obama% and Romney% dropping down to the next line, but you should be able to make out the info in case the link isn’t working for you:
