Q: My daughter stopped practicing her faith and was married to a protestant in his church. Now she has come back, and her protestant husband is preparing to become a Catholic too, next Easter. They understand that their marriage isn’t valid in the eyes of the Catholic Church, but the parish priest told them he can just “bless their marriage” and it will be all right. Can that possibly be true? –Eamon

What I was taught was that the marriage is at its essence the commitment of the husband and wife. The ceremony is just the witnessing of that commitment and the public affirmation of it.

As long as there is that sincere commitment the couple is married in the eyes of God whether or not there is a ceremony.

Even if the ceremony takes place, the couple are not married in the eyes of God if they are insincere in their commitment.

There is nothing in scripture that says the Church has to bless the marriage. If there is, please show me.

So are you saying that you don’t think Christ set the example of blessing a marriage at the Wedding of Cana?

Your loss.

Please forgive my ignorance, but; can't I humbly ask God for His blessing?

My relationship with Him is personal. It would seem blasphemous to act as if another sinner can provide God's blessing.

The why does Christ tell us to “Ask, Seek and Knock?”

If we don’t ask for God’s help, we won’t get it.

When I married my wife the Catholic Church wanted $ 5,000 for an annulment from her previous Catholic marriage. This was in 1976. I told the diocese I could not afford it and they said I couldn’t afford to be Catholic and I would be excommunicated if we married. After 38 years I haven’t forgiving them but wife still claims she is Catholic. I do still receive the offering envelopes.

Are Christians supposed to be a community, an ekklesia?

Or are we all atomistic individuals?

Not that this is going to soothe you but you do know that the $5000.oo is for the Canon lawyers and the investigators that have to research the previous marriage? It’s not just give me money and I annual the marriage. Unless you are a Kennedy, but then again the NE reeks.

Do you believe in the Church that Christ founded? The Bible tells of us Christ’s first miracle. It was at a wedding.

Thus, weddings are important in the eyes of our modern day church.

I dealt with this since my wife is Catholic and I am not.

See the bishop and make a “donation”.

We did not have to make a donation.

bless their marriage: That is when the wife gets you your beer & pretzels before the big game and not interrupt you during the game like asking for help in cooking, cleaning, mowing, raising the kids etc.

I freely admit my ignorance. I am here hoping to learn.

I asked a simple question. Your reply seems unrelated.

Please try again.

My question is sincere. Answering with a question is unhelpful.

Yes. I know that. I agree with that. That is not what I asked.

Where in that story(Wedding of Cana) does it say the Church has to bless the marriage? If there, please show me.

My wife’s annulment was $500. I think you talked to the wrong tribunal. You should have went to another AFTER reporting the priest that was trying to rob you.

I know a guy who cheated constantly on his wife for five years, lied about it all the time, literally was the most entirely wrong member in a divorce as to being at fault than I have ever seen.

He paid. His new marriage is now "blessed". His ex had her life devastated by this piece of crap.

It's sickening what happened and the real story is far worse than I just described.
