Shouldn't Bible-believing church leaders be speaking up on "sainthood"? (vanity)

Posted on 04/27/2014 3:47:28 PM PDT by Faith Presses On

With it so much in the news right now that the Catholic Church is making two former Popes "saints." shouldn't Bible-believing Christians, and those in leadership in particular, be pointing out the Bible truth on who is a saint is? The media won't do this themselves, and the Catholic use of "saint" has caused a lot of ignorance on this most important matter.

"Sure we do......"

No, we don't. A one-time profession of faith is not the same as "enduring until the end." We all must take care lest after gaining knowledge of Christ, we are re-entangled in the defilements of the world and become worse than before.

"Philippians 2:13-14"

All good comes from God. All grace, all faith, all holiness. You must work out your salvation in fear and trembling in order to be receptive to God working through you, lest you be disqualified as Saint Paul himself feared.

"That is not part of that verse. That is not how we are to work out our salvation. Sticking together parts or two separate verses to create a new doctrine is from the enemy."

Yes. Thanks for pointing that out but I totally aware that they are two separate verses. Both are related to the same topic.

Born again believers are already righteous in God's eyes. Even when we sin, He chooses to not hold that sin to our account.

Matthew 6:1-34

Jeremiah 9:23

Proverbs 27:1

Jude 1:16

Etc....

Close, but not quite. Belief must include obedient works to be effective and genuine. Otherwise one deceives himself, and that is unprofitable.

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

You wouldn’t have a Bible or the “Word”, had it not been for the Catholic Church. They pretty much own the intellectual property...

I give credit for God's word to God. His "intellectual" property.

I’m just afraid that when I get to heaven I’m going to have all the saints asking me; “Hey man. How come you didn’t pray to me?”

You should be concerned with God asking that question.

**When the headline screams hatred towards millions of other Christians it is difficult to ignore.**

The headline: Shouldn’t Bible-believing church leaders be speaking up on “sainthood”? (vanity),

Screams hatred?? Paul confronted the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, concerning the proper preaching of the gospel and discipleship. I’m sure he had no hatred for them, and since they all had the Spirit, they also had the guidance of the ‘fruit’ of the Spirit, of which ‘love’, ‘temperance’, and ‘longsuffering’ were likely in use.

Matthew

7:21 - “It is not everyone who keeps saying to me ‘Lord, Lord’ who will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but the man who actually does my Heavenly Father’s will.

7:22-23 - “In ‘that day’ many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we preach in your name, didn’t we cast out devils in your name, and do many great things in your name?’ Then I shall tell them plainly, ‘I have never known you. Go away from me, you have worked on the side of evil!’”

The Catholic Church doesn't "make" anyone a saint, she only recognizes what God has done, testifies to it, and celebrates it.

There must be thousands of Catholic Churches out there since they all believe something different...This comes from an article about the canonization:

Francis took a deep breath and paused for a moment before reciting the saint-making formula in Latin at the start of the ceremony, as if moved by the history he was about to make in canonizing two popes at once.

He said that after deliberating, consulting and praying for divine assistance "we declare and define that Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II be saints and we enroll them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole church."

Your religion makes these guys your saints...God has nothing to do with it...

The term "saint" comes from a French word, which comes from the Latin word meaning "holy". A "saint" is therefore a "holy person" or "holy one" ... in languages other than English, there is typically no linguistic difference between those two terms.

What came first,Latin or Hebrew??? The Hebrews knew what a saint was before the first Latin crawled on the carpet...

I'm no longer a practicing Catholic (I'm a Christian, attend a Christian church) so I'm not comfortable "speaking out" against what the Catholic Church is doing.

I am not the least bit uncomfortable pointing out the errors of the Catholic religion WHEN its members come on a public forum spouting their unbiblical religious practices and beliefs to an unsuspecting public...

Something about "removing the plank from one's own eye before attempting to remove it from other's (eyes)" is appropriate here IMO.

Has nothing to do with a plank...Has to do with leading people to a false religion opposed to leading people to Jesus Christ...

Why are you no longer a practicing Catholic???

Your willfully ignorant in such matters. I see no need to even talk to you on this subject.

We are not at all ignorant of your religion's claims...We just know better than to be suckered into believing them...

When someone hijacks the word, it becomes our business

Well then I'd make sure the word has been hijacked.

A great many people seem to think that nothing is easier or more reliable than telling a book by its cover.

The saints in your opinion would be whom? Does mother Theresa fit the Bill? She saved so many sick, poor and helpless.

Nope...

Does John Paul 2 who fought the Godless communists from the pulpit while in Poland and risked soviet reprisals for his faith count ?

Not in the least...

Maybe Martin Luther because he nailed his thesis to the cathedral?

Not for that reason...

In my RC parochial grade school, we were taught that saints were the people who made it to heaven. Those are the only saints. All others including those who have been given the title ‘Saint’. Are only given a title here on earth. They may or may not really be saints.

You were taught wrong...No one knows who made it to heaven...It may be that none of your popes are in heaven...

There's a reason you Catholic students were never taught from a bible...

Php_1:1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

That's because the bible proves your religion wrong on so many counts...Paul was talking to Saints in a specific town...

Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian church, chapter 12, lays out the importance of recognizing your own unique place in the Body of Christ. Romans 12 echoes this same message, and he touches on the topic in all his letters to the Church. Jesus is the Head of the Body. Believers are a joint-heir of Jesus, because God has no grand-kids. He has given everyone the Grace they need, and placed them in their perfect place in the Body. We exalt Jesus (the Head) and leave any promotion or honor to God (1 Peter 5:3-6, also Psalm 75:6-7 Matthew 23:12, Luke 1:52, 14:11).

I like how the TLB translates this passage as its applicable to this discussion.

1 Corinthians 4:6-7 (TLB)
6 I have used Apollos and myself as examples to illustrate what I have been saying: that you must not have favorites. You must not be proud of one of God’s teachers more than another.
7 What are you so puffed up about? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if all you have is from God, why act as though you are so great, and as though you have accomplished something on your own?

Believers are ONE body. There is no division, and Jesus, the Head, gets all the credit. He is first in everything. Colossians 1:16-19

1 Corinthians 12:18-20 (TLB)
18 But that isn’t the way God has made us. He has made many parts for our bodies and has put each part just where he wants it.
19 What a strange thing a body would be if it had only one part!
20 So he has made many parts, but still there is only one body.

1 Corinthians 12:25-27 (TLB)
25 This makes for happiness among the parts, so that the parts have the same care for each other that they do for themselves.
26 If one part suffers, all parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.
27 Now here is what I am trying to say: All of you together are the one body of Christ, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.

Every part of the Body is vital and important. The risk of honoring or exalting each other, especially on the grounds of works, is that it potentially diminishes the Good News of what Jesus has done for EVERY Believer. People need to see and BELIEVE who and what THEY are NOW in Christ! They need to see and realize their full potential in Christ, not measuring against any other body part. Whether you are the eye, or the the pinky toe, you are valuable, important, and precious to God, especially if you are being led by the Spirit and following His perfect plan for your life.

Read Paul’s explanation of what Jesus has done, and who you are in Christ. No work of man, or earthly honor, can stand next to the Glory God has freely given to the Body of Christ. EVERYONE needs to recognize the wonderful gift they possess and glorify God NOW in this life while it matters.

Ephesians 2:4-6 (AMP)
4 But God—so rich is He in His mercy! Because of and in order to satisfy the great and wonderful and intense love with which He loved us,
5 Even when we were dead (slain) by [our own] shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ; [He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him, for] it is by grace (His favor and mercy which you did not deserve) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation).
6 And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] in Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

Its not what you will be or might do, it is what God HAS MADE YOU TO BE RIGHT NOW! God needs LIVING Saints to be a light to the world, and the hands, feet, and mouth of the Body of Christ. You can’t help but stand in awe of the Love of God when you read what Jesus has done for Believers. You can’t help but praise God by shouting, “Thank you Father!”

Ephesians 2:19 (AMP)
19 Therefore you are no longer outsiders (exiles, migrants, and aliens, excluded from the rights of citizens), but you now share citizenship with the saints (God’s own people, consecrated and set apart for Himself); and you belong to God’s [own] household.

Colossians 1:2 (AMP)
2 To the saints (the consecrated people of God) and believing and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: Grace (spiritual favor and blessing) to you and [heart] peace from God our Father.

Colossians 1:10-12 (AMP)
10 That you may walk (live and conduct yourselves) in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him and desiring to please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing and increasing in and by the knowledge of God [with fuller, deeper, and clearer insight, acquaintance, and recognition].
11 [We pray] that you may be invigorated and strengthened with all power according to the might of His glory, [to exercise] every kind of endurance and patience (perseverance and forbearance) with joy,
12 Giving thanks to the Father, Who has qualified and made us fit to share the portion which is the inheritance of the saints (God’s holy people) in the Light.

Colossians 2:3-10 (AMP)
3 In Him all the treasures of [divine] wisdom (comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God) and [all the riches of spiritual] knowledge and enlightenment are stored up and lie hidden.
4 I say this in order that no one may mislead and delude you by plausible and persuasive and attractive arguments and beguiling speech.
5 For though I am away from you in body, yet I am with you in spirit, delighted at the sight of your [standing shoulder to shoulder in such] orderly array and the firmness and the solid front and steadfastness of your faith in Christ [that leaning of the entire human personality on Him in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness].
6 As you have therefore received Christ, [even] Jesus the Lord, [so] walk (regulate your lives and conduct yourselves) in union with and conformity to Him.
7 Have the roots [of your being] firmly and deeply planted [in Him, fixed and founded in Him], being continually built up in Him, becoming increasingly more confirmed and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and abounding and overflowing in it with thanksgiving.
8 See to it that no one carries you off as spoil or makes you yourselves captive by his so-called philosophy and intellectualism and vain deceit (idle fancies and plain nonsense), following human tradition (men’s ideas of the material rather than the spiritual world), just crude notions following the rudimentary and elemental teachings of the universe and disregarding [the teachings of] Christ (the Messiah).
9 For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead) continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature].
10 And you are in Him, made full and having come to fullness of life [in Christ you too are filled with the Godhead—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—and reach full spiritual stature]. And He is the Head of all rule and authority [of every angelic principality and power].

Believers leave the world’s way of thinking behind and firmly plant their roots in Christ, drawing life and direction from him. The works of the flesh, the traditions and the crude notions of men, are of little value to the Body of Christ (Hebrews 9:14). Our focus is on the spiritual world and walking by faith, being led by the Spirit of God as His Children. We are COMPLETE in Christ. No human vote can change what God has already done.
