No kidding. Ugly-looking, peculiarly curved and top-heavy, destined from its inception to lose its fight with gravity.
If it makes anybody feel any better, Larry Kudlow is a zealous Catholic convert and often speaks of being delivered from drink and drugs. He is eagerly anticipating his trip to Rome for the canonization.
Perhaps God is trying to tell us something?

Just two days before the canonization of Pope John Paul II, a giant crucifix erected in his honor collapsed in Italy, crushing a young man and killing him, according to ANSA. A piece of the 30-meter (98-foot) high wooden crucifix fell down during an event near the village of Cevo, in northern Italy, instantly killing the 21-year-old man. The Jesus Christ figure attached to the cross is six meters high and weighs 600 kg, according to AFP.

looks like it split/failed around where the first guidewire bolts were drilled. bet that weakened it and they probably didn’t waterproof it afterwards.

I spend a lot of time in Europe, and virtually everywhere I go, there’s a monument or two or three...to JPII. Some of them were paid for by him.
I was particularly distressed when I was on Malta and went to the cave where it is traditionally and probably accurately thought that St Paul stayed in during his time on Malta...and I saw a giant statue of JPII praying in front of the cave, which actually blocked the cave and put all the focus on JPII. St Paul? Who’s he?
I was there last Sept, a friend of mine’s father worked on it there in Cevo. This is very sad!
I was there in Sept last year. A friend of mine’s dad actually helped to build it. Their house is visible on the hill behind the monument. It’s a very sad day there in Cevo..
