If a Protestant looking into the claims of Catholicism were to ask me, What one book should I read, where I can find a quick answer to any question I have? I would tell him to read Devin Roses new book The Protestants Dilemma. I would also recommend this book to Protestant apologists, even those of many years, well-skilled in polemics. It will remind them of the heavy burden of proof they face, and the weakness of their position on point after point. The truth may set them free and bring them home too. (It has happened.)
All this may seem like overstatement the obligatory praise from one Catholic blogger to another. But it is not.
Consider first the range of issues this book takes up. There are thirty-six chapters, each one on a different topic, from the papacy to sola scriptura, from the canon of the Bible to Purgatory, from confession to Eucharist to infant baptism. If something about the Catholic Church troubles you, this book has the answer. If you think you have found the point on which Catholicism fails, this book will show you why it is one more point upon which Protestantism fails.
Consider also the brevity. The book is just over 200 pages long, which means that Mr. Roses answers get to the root of the question without a knot of academic detail. It is harder to do than it might seem. This is the book of a man who has spent a long time studying the questions that divide Protestants and Catholics, and who knows how to present his case in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. At the same time, the book is useful for the professional apologist, for it recalls his mind to the basics.

If salvation could be gained any other way, Christ died for nothing.
Dying as a martyr is no guarantee of anything.
It's Jesus who saves, not anyone or anything else.
Nonsense. It's not voluntary if it's mandatory for entering the priesthood or convent.
Nuns and priests who leave the ministry are allowed to renounce those vows and marry and procreate as they desire!!
And yet when Luther did it, he was condemned. How hypocritical.
It's not universal when the CCC teaches that salvation is only through the Catholic church.
And since no one forces them into the priesthood or convent it is voluntary.
Thanks for pointing this out.
I have no ring for you to kiss, but...
yeah, just needs a bit of reeducation and some help from Jesus....not impossible, happens regularily. Once that persons objections are properly dealt with, he begins to see the truth and soon comes home.
I think that He meant that whatever the Catholic Church declares to be in error on Earth, will be considered in error in Heaven....They have the power to bind, declare truth, and to loose, declare error.....Protestantism is in error.
I excuse nothing, they did evil things and I imagine that they were held acccountable. However, their sins were of a personal nature and haad no effect on the Catholic church as an institution. Luther's actions, however, directly attacked the authority of the church and probably caused the loss of millions of souls.
Entering either is voluntary...if you volunteer, you accept the conditions. And yet when Luther did it, he was condemned. How hypocritical.
The least of Luthers problems was if he married or not.
Bah - who cares?!
What does ROME teach about it?
Uh... there's this little thing called the COUNTER reformation...
PROBABLY???
If your vaunted Leaders had NOT been such EVIL men, then the whole Luther thing would have NEVER happened.
Look in the mirror and accept just a LITTLE bit of responsibility; ok?
Right out of the liberal playbook.
What Bill Clinton did in his personal life had no bearing on his ability as POTUS.
On the contrary, a man who has no integrity in his personal life has none for public life either.
If he has no personal integrity, he simply cannot be trusted.
It is the ultimate hypocrisy to condemn Luther and excuse the vastly more corrupt and immoral lives of those popes.
Luther's actions, however, directly attacked the authority of the church and probably caused the loss of millions of souls.
Probably ≠ fact. It's only an opinion based on nothing verifiable.
It's simply a guess for those who want it to be so.
Did any popes after him abuse HIS corpse?
Or is that left to you little inquisitors of today?
Luther attacked the corruption and immorality within the church. If that is attacking the authority of the Church, then the gates of hell are not prevailing against the church. The Catholic church then is the gates of hell.
The body of Christ is not a harlot.
That kind of lifestyle lived by those popes, who are supposed to be picked at the leading of the Holy Spirit to lead the church, show that it could not have been lead by the Holy Spirit.
For all Catholics rail about OSAS, and what horrible teaching it is to teach that once someone is saved, they can live as they want and still make it to heaven, they sure don't have any problem excusing the live as you please in all kinds of immorality and corruption by the popes and other hierarchy of Catholicism.
What a fiend Luther was. To expect so-called men of God to live like Christ did.
The nerve of some people.
I'm sure Elsie is still waiting for that list of 10 best popes. Has anyone found it yet?
Luther tried to hold them accountable and for that he was ex-communicated and he is still being vilified by Catholics, 500 years later, still living in their heads rent free.
Sorry; but I'm not.
