Lol
Thank you, Bigg Red.
Seeing these types of errors bothers my eye the way the sound of a sharp note played instead of a flat would bother the ear. I also find it mystifying, because until I joined FR I never encountered such a quantity of people - who appear to be educated and intelligent - who didn’t know how to make a noun plural. Where does this using the apostrophe at the end of a word come from? Is this what American public schools have been teaching?
And to those who would call me a grammar Nazi - if I wrote that 12x100=1.2O wouldn’t you say something if I kept putting decimal points were none were called for? I hope so, because I’m terrible at arithmetic. So if I did, and you did, I’d thank you, not call you a math Nazi.
Thank you for writing. I do appreciate it.
I have one. It includes knowing how to read and write English correctly. It’s not to late for you to learn.
I am sorry to say that most of the blame does rest on the state of public school education. The students are just not taught composition and grammar the way my generation was. It is truly dreadful.
Sadly, it is the case that the teachers themselves often are unsure of correct usage. Sometimes, I suspect, they are too lazy to assign the writing of a composition because it is very time consuming to read and correct a stack of such assignments.
Thank you for writing. It seems extraordinary that it could be so widespread, and not be caught on exams. To me, it’s the written equivalent of walking aound with one’s fly unzipped or brassiere strap hanging out.
Okay, let me try one last time.
Most posters who point out grammatical errors here are merely dispensing constructive criticism in the hopes of helping the poster to learn and to improve communication skills. No one is attacking your character or questioning your intellect.
Some people are just not good spellers. My husband is one of them, which is why he asks me to proofread important communications. I, conversely, am a mess with mathematics, while he is a walking calculator. Because we each know our own strengths and weaknesses, we help one another where necessary, and neither of us is insulted by this arrangement.
Nearly everyone on FR makes a typo now and then, as we are posting in a hurry with a clumsy editing function. But there are recurring errors among some posters that some other posters try to address. Unless the corrector is calling someone names, you can usually be sure that there is not malicious intent involved. Proper punctuation and spelling help us to make our point clearly. Misspellings and misplaced punctuation marks can create ambiguity or garble the message.
So, please do not assume that such corrections are meant as personal attacks.
I hope you have a wonderful day.
