Archdiocese for Military Service's general counsel warns that priests who are under government contract to provide such services, but are not active-duty military chaplains, will not be "permitted to work not even to volunteer during the shutdown."
The government shutdown has affected a broad swathe of government services, as reported here in the Washington Post. But who would have thought that the standoff on Capitol Hill could disrupt Sunday masses and baptisms on military bases?
John Schlageter, the general counsel for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, warned -- in a statement to the Register -- that if the shutdown continues over the weekend
there will be no Catholic priest to celebrate Mass this Sunday in the chapel at Marine Corps Base Quantico. The priest who celebrates Mass there is a government contractor .
The nub of the problem is that the shortage of active-duty Catholic military chaplains has forced the government to hire GS and contract priests who are not permitted to "work" --or even volunteer--if the shutdown continues.

O-vomit is throwing his weight around.
Wow. Just wow. This is wrong on so many levels.
Will the golf course be able to operate on base?
I would imagine so, as it is run by non-appropriated funds (having said that, Barry may decide to close every golf course except Andrews...to spread the pain as much as possible)
Hell you say.
If these priests do not show up for their religious services and perform them anyway, they are not upholding their own belief system.
The US government has ZERO right to stop priests or pastors from their calling.
Ping.
So now the Federal govt.is running the church?
Hold Mass just outside the property line.
Pretty easy to just turn them away at the gate. That’s coming next.
Matthew 18:20
I believe this to be a violation of military regulations - depriving the Marines of first amendment rights.
Then they stand at the gate and conduct the service, regardless if anyone is there or not.
It starts with one...
If they are not willing to stand what good are they.
Bingo! stand at the gate if necessary do not cave.
wait what? the government is forbidding priests from saying Mass? good luck with that
Pretty easy to just turn them away at the gate. Thats coming next.
= = = = = = = = = = = = =
I was thinking that Priests that I have ‘known’ would more than likely ‘disregard’ the order so then the Gov would just forbid them from entering the base.
Problem there (hopefully) may be— is ‘Private O’Casey’ willing to hear the wrath of his Grandmother should he be the one to turn ‘Father Callahan’ back at the gate.
Of course ‘SGT O’Rourke’ may just say “You have shoved women down my throat, and attempting to shove gays up my arse, now you want me to not have Mass because you boobs can’t get your act together”?
The ‘straw that breaks the camels back is not always a large one’.
Now, if ‘they’ keep messing with the ‘Big Guy’, he is liable to bring an ‘attitude’ to the table.
Jawohl! Der Trottel Fuhrer ist der gott!, of the demonrats that is.
Isn’t this a violation of separation of church and state?
