Signs of a Cult
http://www.reachingcatholics.org/signs.html ^ | Unknown | Greg Durel

Posted on 09/27/2013 1:26:05 AM PDT by jodyel

There are about seven principle signs that identify a cult. Now when one hears the word "cult," the first connotation is that of some strange obscure religious group. But for our discussion the word cult is simply a word that describes organized heresy. In other words, any religious group that systematically teaches false doctrine. Knowing some of these signs is key to preventing people from following these cults.

The sign we will focus on here is the teaching of exclusivity. Cults will declare that they are the only way to heaven. Apart from them there is no salvation. They alone are the repositories of truth and all must join them to be saved. Here one might say, "yea, like the Jehovah’s Witnesses or the Mormons." But to infer, let alone say, that Catholicism is in this class, is to be condemned as a hate monger or Catholic basher.

To demonstrate that Roman Catholicism bears the mark of a cult is quite easy indeed. If we were left to our opinions and personal interpretations, it might be difficult, but Rome has supplied a mass (no pun intended) of evidence to use. For example:

1) "WE BELIEVE THE CHURCH IS NECESSARY FOR SALVATION BECAUSE CHRIST, WHO IS THE SOLE MEDIATOR AND EXCLUSIVE WAY OF SALVATION, RENDERS HIMSELF PRESENT FOR US IN HIS BODY WHICH IS THE CHURCH. WE MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER THE UNITY OF THE MYSTICAL BODY, WITHOUT WHICH THERE CAN BE NO SALVATION, IS OPEN TO NO ONE OUTSIDE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH." Pope Paul VI

2) "THE HOLY UNIVERSAL CHURCH PROCLAIMS THAT GOD CANNOT TRULY BE WORSHIPPED SAVE WITHIN HERSELF, AND ASSERTS THAT ALL THEY WHO ARE WITHOUT HER PALE SHALL NEVER BE SAVED." Pope Gregory the Great (Now how is that for ecumenism!)

3) "THE CHURCH IS LIKE THE ARK OF NOAH, OUTSIDE OF WHICH NOBODY CAN BE SAVED." Thomas Aquinas.

4) "THAT THERE IS ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH WE ARE COMPELLED TO BELIEVE AND TO HOLD, PROMPTED BY DIVINE FAITH, AND WE DO BELIEVE THIS FIRMLY AND CONFESS IT SIMPLY, OUTSIDE OF WHICH THERE CAN BE NO SALVATION, OR REMISSION OF SINS…." Pope Boniface VIII

5) "IT IS A SIN TO BELIEVE THAT THERE IS SALVATION OUTSIDE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH." Pope Pius IX

6) "FOR IT IS THROUGH CHRIST’S CATHOLIC CHURCH ALONE, WHICH IS THE UNIVERSAL HELP TOWARDS SALVATION, THAT THE FULNESS OF THE MEANS OF SALVATION CAN BE OBTAINED." Vatican II

Now we have just cited six infallible sources of the Catholic Church to prove without reservations that they believe that they are the only way to heaven. Understand that they are saying that only Roman Catholics have a chance at going to heaven. This is classic cult mentality. The organization becomes the focus and the savior. Allow us to clearly illustrate this fact. In a recent debate with a Jesuit theologian, we were able to ask a very simple yet extremely important question. The question was "what do we have to do to go to heaven?" The answer that followed was very revealing. It clearly proved that Roman Catholicism teaches that every Baptist is going to hell, in addition to every Presbyterian, Methodist, etc. The Jesuit theologian said to go to heaven we must "do" several things. Firstly, believe the entire Bible. (Sounds like a fundamentalist.) Secondly, we must be baptized in water. Thirdly, we must keep the commandments. Fourthly, we must eat His flesh and drink His blood literally (in the sacrament of the mass). He mentioned a couple of others, but these four should suffice.

The Scripture clearly reveals to one and all that salvation comes from believing in the Lord Jesus Christ alone. (Cf. Acts 16:30-31; Eph. 2:8-9; Titus 3:5) The entire book of Galatians was written to demonstrate the futility of believing that the Law justifies or saves anyone. But the "eating" and "drinking" the literal flesh and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ says it all. For according to Roman Catholic theology, this can only be done after a "priest"—and only a priest—says the words of consecration over the bread and wine. Hence, no Catholic Church, no priest. No priest, no Mass or transubstantiation. No transubstantiation, no eating His flesh or drinking His blood. No eating and drinking of Jesus literally, NO SALVATION!

We commend to your reading Hebrews 7, 8, 9 and 10. The mysticism is clearly not biblical and certainly not necessary for anyone to be saved. Their insistence on such heresies places them at the top of the list of religious cults. That statement may seem a bit harsh, but it is nonetheless true. Catholicism does not differ from any of the cults where our first sign is concerned. A closer look at the other signs of a cult further confirm the fact that Catholicism, while large in number, humanitarian in practice, is still unbiblical and perhaps the mother of all "Christian" cults.

Faint not dear, and pray nightly that the words you post will be the words of God as He has revealed them. Your doing great. Press on with full confidence that the Holy Spirit will guide you when you seek Him. And don’t let the “love” perversion they spew get to you. It’s not love to allow someone to stay in ignorance when the truth must be spoken.

I sincerely do desire to be there on judgement day as Catholics give account of themselves but not for the reasons you think.
Catholics will be held more accountable, because they have been given much, so they could get more heat, BUT why would you want to witness something so negative... if you're a Christian?

I hate to be that guy, but the condemnation of the damned isn’t something negative, it’s to the greater glory of God.

It’s negative IMO if you’re interested in seeing it happen to someone else...

>> Are the two things really just the same for you?<<

So you think Satan can’t have people do miracles? Guess again.

Exodus 7:11 Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. 12 For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents:

Exodus 7:22: Satan’s minions turned water into blood.

The spirits of devils can do miracles.

Revelation 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

2 Thessalonians 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

Satan appears as an angel of light.

2 Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Catholics like to brag about the good works they do and the miracles their so called saints have done.

Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

The haughtyness of Catholics trying to impress because of good works and miracles is exposed by scripture. Don’t come to me and think I will be impressed.

John 5:28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. ...

Bears repeating with a highlight. Still Catholics will say they are already living and can hear and convey their prayers. The RCC lies.

Actually, it was somewhat amiss, in that the first sentence was indeed there in SOLEMNI HAC LITURGIA, but the second sentence not, nor was it word for word found where the notes lead which was LUMEN GENTIUM at .14 or .16, although the idea expressed in the second sentence which is being called "fake" --- "WE MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER THE UNITY OF THE MYSTICAL BODY, WITHOUT WHICH THERE CAN BE NO SALVATION, IS OPEN TO NO ONE OUTSIDE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH" can easily enough be found elsewhere...and I have been encountering it word-for-word attributed to to Paul VI, also. Just not the two in the OP's article precisely together.

More to follow....

What part of "love of the truth" don't you get? The love of the truth means that sometimes anger flares. Paul knew this. Everyone who tries to be an ambassador for Christ, and beseech others to be reconciled to God knows this.

"PREACH THE WORD; be instant in season, out of season; REPROVE, REBUKE, EXHORT with ALL longsuffering and DOCTRINE."(2 TIm.4:2).

Does that sound like high tea with scones and crumpets and white gloves to you? If it does, you either don't want to get into the truth, or you think the truth is always lovey-dovey and bunny burps. Grow up into the Lord. We're in a spiritual battle for men's souls here.

This one was supposed to be infallible for crying out loud.

Hey Arthur, see that first paragraph?

…that no one, whatever almsgiving he has practiced, even if he has shed blood for the name of Christ, can be saved, unless he has remained in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.” Pope Eugene IV, Cantate Domino, Bull promulgated on February 4, 1441 (Florentine style), proclaimed “ex cathedra” (infallible).

Pope Boniface VIII, Unam Sanctam: “We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.” — Pope Boniface VIII, Unam Sanctam (Promulgated November 18, 1302) http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/b8-unam.html

Then there is.

The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can profit by the sacraments of the Church unto salvation, and they alone can receive an eternal recompense for their fasts, their almsgivings, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, no one, even if he pour out his blood for the Name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church. Source: Papal Bull Cantate Domino, by Pope Eugene IV, 1441.

The Holy Catholic Church teaches that God cannot be adored except within her fold; she affirms that all those who are separated from her will not be saved. (Pope St. Gregory the Great, “Moralia,” XIV:5)

Neither the true Faith nor eternal salvation is to be found outside the Holy Catholic Church. It is a SIN to believe that there is salvation outside the Catholic Church. (Ven. Pope Pius IX, Singulari Quidem, March 17, 1856; cf. also OUR GLORIOUS POPES, Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Cambridge, MA: 1955, p.168)

But that first one must not have been so infallible after all because now….

RCC: 847 This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church: Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience – those too may achieve eternal salvation.

Then you have those Catholics who think that you don’t even need to trust in Jesus alone let alone know of Him to obtain salvation. How anyone can follow that duplicitous organization is beyond me.

Aah, now I see the second sentence didn't follow the first. But the first sentence was there...

For comparison & convenience sake, here's the first sentence again; We believe that the Church is necessary for salvation, because Christ, who is the sole mediator and way of salvation, renders Himself present for us in His body which is the Church which we do find in SOLEMNI HAC LITURGIA.

After some further searching, it becomes plain that the second part, which you are calling "fake" is found on other pages, with attributions going to journals.

On a strongly pro-"Catholic" page Angelqueen a guy calling himself "Tim" uses the second of the two sentences, [see below] attributing it to Paul VI.

If wishing to view it online, scroll down to #5 of what the writer 'Tim' (obviously quite the RadTrad, our boy Tim) terms;

The quote in question, from the OP's article is itself discussed here http://catholicforum.fisheaters.com/index.php?topic=3447924.0;wap2 with the precise copy/paste noted to be used a lot, attributed to Paul VI, but with nothing further as to where exactly.

Noodling around a bit further, I've come across the same (or nearly identical) wording in few other places too, both pro "Romanist" and some decidedly "Anti" with a capital "A", where citation for usages read;

with the immediately above, including what I highlighted in bold; "Wanderer" and "Apostolic Digest" source citation listed there in conjunction with presentation of the "quote", from among a few other places I found the same, can be found at; http://www.lightministries.com/id527.htm " Amazing Catholic Statements Regarding the Roman Catholic Church - versus - All Other Religions"

Which leaves the attributed to Paul VI quotes, quite possibly not really "fake" at all. Or if so...then possibly(?) not created by the writer of the article, being as it is not that far out of "Catholic" thinking and writings. There was, beginning in Vatican II era (and still is) a blend of somewhat scattered theology which fully embraces and strenuously emphasizes; "no salvation outside the Catholic church" but extends that church beyond it's own walls and sacraments, at the same time...

On Yahoo, allegedly 2 years ago Is this Papal pronouncement still in effect? the two sentences appeared in tandem/consecutively. Whether it came from Durel originally? That could be possible, for right-clicking, checking page info I found "Page last modified: Tuesday, February 15, 2000 6:32:59 AM".

>>See, that’s where your delusion lies: you aren’t an authority, nor are you a disciple<<

1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. John 14:16,17

Acts 15:8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the holy Spirit just as he did us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts.
