Why is Philomena No Longer Considered a Saint?
Canon Law Made Easy ^ | September 12, 2013 | Cathy Caridi, J.C.L.

Q: How is it that the martyr Philomena used to be a saint, but isn’t any more? I don’t understand how the Church can canonize a saint and then change its mind… –Mary

A: Philomena is not, and has never been a saint.

Many Catholics erroneously believe that Philomena used to be a saint, and was somehow “decanonized” by Pope John XXIII in 1961. In fact, the action taken that year by the Congregation of Rites—which back then had jurisdiction over matters pertaining to the canonization of saints—actually clarified and made more consistent the canonical status of the person commonly known as “Saint Philomena,” which up to that point had been quite confused. But the surprising refusal of some lay-Catholics to accept the Vatican’s pronouncement has subsequently caused the confusion surrounding Philomena to be greater than ever!

But the Pope does not canonize people as saints unless the evidence is as rock-solid as can possibly be.

Then explain the current pope's determination to declare John XXIII a saint.

St. Philolena, pray for the wayward modernist church.

According to The Catholic Store;

Contrary to popular belief we are not directly affiliated with the Catholic Church, or any diocese or parish. We are however associated with the Catholic Church through our faith lives. The Catholic Company provides us the means to provide for our families and our parish communities. Our staff and their families belong to over 10 parishes in Charlotte, NC and the surrounding area. We also support with our time, talent, and treasure important Catholic organizations throughout our area, including: Belmont Abbey College, Room at the Inn (a home for pregnant single women), and the Knights of Columbus.

They haven't gotten the memo yet ..

"Saint Philomena is the patron of babies, orphans, test takers, youth, and impossible causes. Very little is known about her life as she was martyred in the early years of the Church at the age of fourteen. Saint Philomena's shrine in Mugnano has had numerous cures attributed to it since 1805. She is the only person to be recognized as a Saint solely on the basis of miraculous intercession. St. Philomena's feast day is August 11th.."

There is a St. Philomena parish in Torrance, CA. They wouldn’t have a parish named after her if she weren’t a saint.

What evidence do you have against Pope John XXIII that would thwart his canonization?

Got to remember that Blessed John XXIII is going to be declared a saint on the same day, next Divine Mercy Sunday as Blessed John Paul II. Blessed John XXIII going for the ride in other words, while the bigger focus will be on Blessed John Paul II being declared a saint. Blessed JP II will be famous for making popular the divine mercy devotion.

St. Faustina miraculously answered something for me before she was declared a saint.

What’s up with St. Christopher? Has he been reinstated as a Saint? My brother Chris was pretty disappointed when it was decided that there was not enough evidence that St. Christopher really lived and had done what was attributed to him.

I have no evidence to thwart canonization. We don't have a "devil's advocate" any more so as far as I know no one has evidence to thwart canonization.

But the burden of proof is on those advocating canonization. Ordinarily, two verified miracles due to the candidate's intervention are required for canonization. Pope Francis has waived this requirement for John XXIII.

John Paul II however does have two verified miracles.

He only waived the need for the second verified miracle didn’t he?

My mother’s real name was Filomina and nobody named kids after people who weren’t saints.

She is still a saint. She may not be in the new Roman Missal, but she is still a saint.

So much for the bogus Roman Catholic unity, eh???

I thought all this talk of “decanonizing” saints is really just a pragmatic matter of not enough days in the year for feast days for all of them.

Just because the Missal doesn’t list St. Christopher or any other saint that got bumped doesn’t reflect some kind of reversal of their status.
