Question:
What would a baptized and confirmed Roman Catholic need to do in order to join the Orthodox Presbyterian Church?
Answer:
Allow me to answer you question with a brief autobiographical anecdote. I was born, baptized, raised, confirmed, and educated in the Roman Catholic system. In fact, it was while I was at a Roman Catholic college (of all places) that I was converted by the grace of God. After realizing how different the teachings of the RCC are from Scripture, I joined with a Baptist church. And that church required that I be rebaptized as an adult. So, I went through that process and became a member. Several years later I came to understand the doctrine of the Bible as it was taught in Reformed churches like the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC). Joining them was quite easy. I went before the session (a group of men who are officers in the church) where they interviewed me to make sure I had a credible profession of faith in Jesus Christ. The following Sunday they put me before the congregation where I publicly professed my faith in Jesus Christ in the form of several membership vows. And that was it. I was a member!
So, being baptized and confirmed in the RCC is no big obstacle if you want to become a member of the OPC. As long as you have come to trust in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation, and you trust not in any of your works. When asked the question "What must I do to be saved?", the response of Paul and Silas was "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31), and that is still true today. What is important is to put your full trust in Jesus. If you have done that, if you have repented of your sin and trust in Jesus alone, you are welcomed into the fellowship of the OPC. There is no need to be re-baptized and there is no need to renounce your confirmation.
At this point I would strongly encourage you to seek out the pastor of a local OPC, and he can guide you through the details of the steps toward membership in the OPC. If you need assistance finding an OPC in your area, you can check out our Directory of Churches. May God bless you and may you "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 5:18). If we can be of further assistance, just let us know!
In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God and the Word was God. His Word will last forever (unlike denominations). Do you suppose Heaven will be divided up with Baptists over here and Catholics over there? Is that what you think?
We won’t hear any more of it. :)
wow..
please tell me where in the old testament you can just leave your wife and screw whoever you want whenever you want..
tell me where a marriage in a church, recognized by god, can be set aside just because you feel like it..
please, point out the old testament passages..
until then, i do not care what you say..
quote all the bible passages you wish, and please be sure to take them out of context, like most protestants i have met and discussed this with..
catholics have been studing the bible for millenium..
your so called pastor has his own interpretations, derived from his own feelings, and manipulted to suit whatever needs or discussions he needs to make..
give me a break pal...
Don’t hold back. tell us how you really feel.
No, what I think is that you’re evading an important question. Why do you believe the Bible is from God?
Evading questions have just become second nature to me I guess. I’m still getting a buzz from joe fonebone. The Bible claims to be revelations from God to His sheep. It either is or isn’t. I made an independent decision, based on the evidence, that it was. Good enough? Or do I need to throw in the minutes of some Councils meetings from years past?
Please name a Catholic who wrote any of the Old Testament.
Yes, 1 of the NT gospels said Jesus told Peter that Peter would build his church.
Peter founded the catholic church..
... and the Eastern Orthodox also venerate Peter as the 1st patriarch.
all who followed Peter wrote the bible..
Seems to me the Eastern Orthodox have an equally valid claim.
1. Epistle of James - James, the brother of Jesus
2. First Epistle of Peter - Apostle Peter
3. Second Epistle of Peter - widely considered not to have been written by him
4. First Epistle of John - John the Apostle
5. Second Epistle of John - John the Apostle
6. Third Epistle of John - John the Apostle
7. Epistle of Jude - Jude, the brother of Jesus and James
8. Revelation - John the Apostle or John or Patmos
the bible was held sacred by catholic until around the 15th century..
Typical RCC dismissal of the Eastern Orthodox, Jan Hus (burned at the stake by the RCC for heresy), Ulrich Zwingli, and Martin Luther.
when the king of england wanted to screw everyone and everything with a vagina that came his way...
True statement in and of itself, but too simplistic an explanation. The Protestant Reformation had already washed ashore in merry olde England and was emerging as the English Reformation. While once a vital denomination, the Church of England is now apostate and is in the process of being pruned from the vine of Christianity.
pretty simple really, if you are willing to just follow the timeline...
Not as simple as you would like it to be.
Wouldn't that mean that if someone was going to eventually end up in the OPC everything would be made clear to him in the fullness of time?
The Koran claims to be revelations from God. So does the Book of Mormon. Why aren’t you Muslim or Mormon? Or Marxist?
You are ok betting your salvation on a self authenticating document? Wow.
The Baptists will be mixed in with the Pentecostals, so that they can learn to dance in Heaven!
(Sorry, a brief attempt at humour as the level of discussion on this thread has dropped to a very nasty level.)
It's the one which will never let you go. THEY consider you still family.
The evidence does not support the Koran or BOM to be anything other than spurious. The self authentication is what spurred me to prove to myself whether it was what it claimed to be or not. I’m okay with betting my salvation with Jesus. He died for me, I must live for him.
All christians believe in predestination. Depending on the version of the Bible you are reading, the word predestined is used 4-5 times.
The question is how do you define the term?
Hey, humor is the lubrication of a clogged argument. Especially in a religion topic in which every one puffs up and loudly . . . no I’m not going to post what I was going to post. But I do like civil discussions among the learned and unkempt.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
