Pope Francis said on Saturday it pained him to see priests driving flashy cars, and told them to pick something more "humble".
As part of his drive to make the Catholic Church more austere and focus on the poor, Francis told young and trainee priests and nuns from around the world that having the latest smartphone or fashion accessory was not the route to happiness.
"It hurts me when I see a priest or a nun with the latest model car, you can't do this," he said.
"A car is necessary to do a lot of work, but please, choose a more humble one. If you like the fancy one, just think about how many children are dying of hunger in the world," he said.

A new car isn’t necessarily an ostentatious one and there’s no requirement that a humble car must be an old one.

perhaps the Pope needs to cut the budget instead of telling what types of cars his staff & compatriots drive. statements like this show a particular kind of idiocy from the get go and shows no financial acumen. his mouth is working overtime in a too simplistic socialist way(his parents were both). there’s nothing wrong with enjoying technology and all of God’s gifts to us to enhance our lives; and I’m a church-going Catholic, too.

I never got the impression that family was wealthy....There are books out there that pretty much destroys the age old myth of Jesus coming from a “Poor family of a carpenter.” Joseph had, in the old Aramic or whatever language they used at the time, The name of “Tec” attached. Tec at that time meant Achitect, which indicates Joseph was an upper class engineer, not a carpenter. Jesus spent time as a boy in Egypt, studying (which indicates upper class means right there)quite probably while Joseph the architect was building a temple or residence for a rich Egyptian. And, yes, the very fact that Mary rode an ass for her trip to Bethlehem indicates wealth. Also, ever wonder why Joseph of Arimethia was so close to Jesus and his family? How did the richest man on the planet at that time notice “poor carpenter and his family?” There is evidence (written by the way”, that Jesus was in The British Isles (not the name of the place at that time) working for, or as the guest of, Joseph of A. while Joseph of A. tended to his tin mines. I wish I remembered the name of the Author and the book because the documentations, logic and other proof was in direct compliment to the Bible and history as told to us this day. Conclusion, Herod was in deep doo-doo with Rome for allowing the Jews to crucify Jesus because of his (Jesus’) ties to powerful, rich people in the Roman Empire.
His father said he had to do three things in orde to earn the privilege of driving. 1- Get his grades up. 2 - Keep his room clean. 3- Get a haircut.
A month later he again asked his father to use the car.
His father said he had done two of the three things in order to earn the privilege. He had gotten his grades up. He had kept his room clean. But he had not cut his hair.
The son replied that Jesus and his disciples all had long hair. So why was it such a big deal?
The father replied that it was a big deal because it was HIS car.
And besides that fact, Jesus and his disciples walked everywhere they went.
Then again, he might prefer motorcycles.

If you read the article as you apparently read the Bible, with skepticism, the doctor’s theory falls apart. He argues from silence, and then fills in the silence.
“Dr Bradford said: “Jesus’s high ranking position as a Jew seems to have been written out of history...”
“’If Jesus was the son of a poor itinerant carpenter with some radical ideas nobody would have been that concerned about what he said.”
Except the Bible records Jesus, as a child, shocking the chief rabbis with his knowledge, and people who grew up with Him, dismissing Him as “the carpenter’s son.”

I think you’re on the right track. BTW, did you know that Columbo was patterned after Chesterton’s Fr. Brown character? Columbo was a sort of of monk/detective, although Fr. Brown wasn’t, or at least hadn’t taken a vow of poverty.

Catholic parish priests do not take a vow of poverty, but receive a small stipend. Any priests driving fancy cars are using family money, money given as a gift, or money embezzled from their parish ;-)

Which is it? Did the family have "wealth" or was Joseph a "poor carpenter" - you've made each assertion here. And where does the Bible say Joseph of Arimethia was "close to Jesus and his family"? Does scripture even say whether Joseph of Arimethia ever talked to Jesus or met anyone else in his family? All I recall is the bible saying he was a disciple of Jesus.
