Newspaper's online image called 'blasphemous' [Catholics / Lady of Guadalupe]

SANTA FE, N.M. —A newspaper’s recent online design, which depicts a woman who looks like Lady of Guadalupe in a bikini, has drawn controversy from Catholics across the state.

The cartoon woman in The Santa Fe Reporter's "Summer Guide 2013" issue is wearing a yellow bikini, along with a blue cloak that covers the top of her head and nothing else. Behind the woman, there are yellow sun rays. She is sipping from a margarita glass.

The cover design has angered Catholics because of the woman's uncanny resemblance to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

“I think that's very offensive,” said local Catholic David Rodke. "(The paper) seems to be posing her as the Virgin of Guadalupe. That's blasphemous!"

Alexa Schirtzinger, the editor of The Santa Fe Reporter, declined to do an interview. However, Shirtzinger posted a blog in response to the outrage over the image.

"The intent of our Summer Guide cover design was not to insult or denigrate any religion or ethnicity, but rather to incorporate an important part of Santa Fe's culture into an image that also unites other diverse cultures that flourish in our city,” Schirtzinger wrote in the blog.

Resident Terence Lente said the picture may be in poor taste, but there’s no reason to censor it.

“I can see how this could offend many people,” Lente said. “It [snip] people off but at the same time. It’s freedom of speech.”

The Santa Fe Reporter distributes close to 20,0000 copies each week to Albuquerque, Santa Fe and parts of northern New Mexico.

It's not blasphemy. It's sacrilege. Not that most folks understand the difference.

And the cowboy looks like a flaming faggot. The artist must have been channeling "Village People".

You asked for a Scriptural reference. It was provided.

Saying that others were also 'blessed' does not make Mary's less so, nor refute hers is more so. And none of the others whom you mention declared in a scriptural 'Magnificat' that ... 'all generations henceforth shall call me blessed'. None of those others carried Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, in their wombs for nine months sharing the same blood coursing through their veins.

And it was only Mary that Jesus Christ Himself referred to when He said to John (and similarly to all Christians) at the foot of the Cross before His earthly death ... 'Behold your Mother'.

In fairness though, she is Jesus' mother (the one who brought forth Jesus from her womb), and since Jesus is God the Son, that does technically make her the mother of God (the Son).

Are you Catholic?

Seriously ... you just identified precisely why we use the term "Mother of God". It is precisely and explicitly to affirm that Jesus Christ is GOD ... a proposition denied by certain folks, back when the term came into use.

I don't think "blasphemy" was used here in a precise sense, as an insult only to the Deity uniquely and personally, but in the looser sense as an insult to a holy person, place image or thing.

For instance, that might include a rendition of Michelangelo's famous "Creation of Adam" with God reconfigured as the Flying Spaghetti Monster, OR with Adam photoshopped as Liberace or Little Black Sambo.

Or, say, a Cross covered with a condom, a crucifix in a jar of urine, a Torah scroll used as toilet paper, Daffy Duck bringing the Tables of the Law down from Mount Sinai, etc.

These are certainly offensive. So is the Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ in a bikini. The people responsible for this are showing either an imbecile-level of cultural perception intelligence, or a f-you level of respect for religious values.

It should not be censored (in the sense of forcible suppression by the government power.) Heavens-to-Liberty, no. There should be push-back, shaming, and a bankruptcy-level boycott.

Abraham:
And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be BLESSED IN HIM?

13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”[h]), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Abraham probably shares a blessing no less important. The blessing of Abraham was Christ.

The cover design has angered Catholics because of the woman's uncanny resemblance to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

If God is offended, he will take action.

The fact that unbelievers will insult the faith is a given.

What are we...muslims?

Thank you. That is absolutely fascinating.

I went to Catholic school from kindergarten through my first year of college and do not
recall hearing those details when the Miracle of Guadalupe was covered in Religion class.

It’s not “uncanny.” It’s intentional.

"When you call her the Mother of God, you are making her God the Father’s equal."

Not true. She was --- to use the word correctly understood by Orthodox, by Catholics, and by you --- Jesus's birthgiver. Jesus is God. He existed from all eternity; she did not. He is the Alpha and Omega. She is not. He is God, she is not. He is her creator and savior. She does not create or save herself, her Son, or anyone else.

Repeating a false explanation of Mary, mother of God as "goddess" or some such, would be either ignorance or malice. I'm always wondering which.

"I would love to see you use Scripture to show how insulting Mary equated to insulting the Lord Jesus Christ, "

I don't see how it's precisely equal, since Jesus Christ is a divine Person, and Mary is a lower order of being, a human person. However, Scripture says to "honor your father and your mother," and she who was honored by Jesus ought not to be dishonored by us. As well, nobody would even bother to dishonor Mary if it were not for her relationship to her Son. Imbecile artists don't bother to dishonor a nobody. They dishonor her precisely because it trivializes her Son.

"Ironically, Mary is also called the Queen of Heaven, which is also the name given Asherah (the Mother of the Gods) and Hera/Juno (the Mother of Gods)."

If by "ironic" you mean "happening in the opposite way to what is expected," --- which is Dictionary.com's definition of ironic --- then you are right. It is ironic --- unexpected --- that a Jewish girl from Galilee would have a title like "Queen of Heaven." It is ironic because of her total humility: she is the handmaid of the Lord.

However,in the Jewish tradition, the mother of the King --- the "Queen Mother" --- had a special position. The wife of the King was not necessarily eminent, because a king might have many wives; but he only had one mother. The customary Jewish honor to the Queen Mother is exemplified here:

1 Kings 2:19
Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a throne to be set for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.

I'm sure you're aware of the significance of the "right hand."

All this shows that Mary spoke well both when she said "My spirit rejoices in God my Savior," and when she said "All generations will call me blessed."

We are fulfilling that prophecy whenever we honor her by calling her Blessed Mary.

Others fulfill a different prophecy --- the prophecy which says "I will put enmity between you [the Serpent] and the Woman, between your seed and her seed."

It is always instructive -- and saddening --- to see where the enmity is coming from.

She left a picture in 1531 on a poncho with should have disintegrated within a few years. The image is filled with symbolism from the sun and moon to the stars on her mantle which are in the position they were in the sky on Dec 13, 1531. If the image is highly magnified, 13 people may be seen to be reflected in her eyes, they are those who were present at the time the tilma (poncho) was unfurled.

You:

"Moses was blessed."

"Jacob was blessed."

(Jacob and angel)

"Abraham was blessed."

(Abraham and Isaac)

"Why no statues to them?"

Why do I have to do all your homework?

Are you not aware of all the scientific experiements done on the tilma of St. Juan Diego when he followed Mary’s instruction, picked roses in the winter, went to the bishop for the second time and dumped out the roses??

The image was miraculously embedded on the tilma of cactus threads which should have scientifically decayed by now — but it is still all there even today.

A bomb was set off to destroy the tilma, enclosed in glass, and candlesticks were bent, and other surrounding furnishing destroyed, but the tilma and its case were not harmed.

Scientists have also discovered in the eyes of the image, a reflective (like a camera negative — old fashioned) and the image cannot be explained by the scientists because it has the Bishop and all those whom St. Juan Diego was facing in her eyes.

Links with a lot more details in the next post.

PS. If the scientists believe this is a miracle, why can’t other people.

One funny thing with this: When Hillary Clinton was visiting the church, she asked, “Who painted it?”

There are no traces of paint of brush strokes on the tilma at all. Hillary goofed big time with Catholics.
