Pope Francis set a record by canonizing 800 15th Century laymen that refused to convert to Islam and brutally died because of it.
It is a story of faith and strength in the face of death, death from a brutal and barbaric people.
But NBC is worried for poor Pope Francis. They are worried that acknowledging that these 800 heroes died true martyrs death and thus are assured of heaven, that the Pope may have hurt Islam's feelings. But no worries, there is someone more evil than the Pope to blame.
But the choice to highlight their sacrifice may put a strain on the already fragile relationship between the Catholic Church and Islam.
Ever since his election, Pope Francis has called for greater dialogue between Christianity and other religions, in particular Islam. And so far, he has acted on that promise. He washed the feet of a young Muslim woman jailed in a juvenile prison on Holy Thursday, and reached out to the many “Muslim brothers and sisters” during his first Good Friday procession.
So why risk creating yet another inter-faith row with a celebration which some in the Muslim world may be seen as a provocation?

Because Christians live under the teachings of Jesus Christ. We look to the Old Testament wisdom, revelation and knowledge, but the New Covenant supercedes the Old.

What we need is a Frank Capra movie about the real events: where the protagonist kills all the muslum’s in 1250 ad? and the world lives in peace. then he runs into IRS problems and tries to kill himself. Clarence the angel rescues him and then shows him what life would be like with all the muslums that he killed survived and propagated and are now killing and oppressing people today. he realizes what a difference he made to his family, neighbors and society by killing all of the muslums. Then everyone he knows and helped in life fixes his IRS problem. and he lives happily ever after with donna reed as his wife. (i loved Donna Reed as a kid) unfortunately the movie goes internet viral and as a result of a protest concerning the video “that we had nothing to do with”, goes awry and one of our ambassadors and 3 heroes get killed.
The only thing I regret about the Crusades is that the Crusaders did not have tactical nukes.

Since Jesus' death and resurrection, we are under a covenant of Grace and are to share His Grace. (Part of the Lord's Prayer, Matt 6:12 " And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us .) In other words, if we don't forgive those who hurt and sin against us, God will not forgive us the sins we have done against others! Remember the parable of the merciless servant (Matthew 18:21-35). Even the Old Testament, Exodus 21:24-25 ("eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.") is designed to limit revenge that might be sought by an injured party.
I am not a Roman Catholic and have serious issues with some of the Roman Catholic beliefs and practices however, I have a lot of respect for Pope Francis. In washing the feet of an imprisoned Muslim juvenile, he is demonstrating humility, meekness and forgiveness, as was his reaching out to "Muslim brothers and sisters". At the same time, by canonizing the Otranto martyrs, he is reminding all, that the murdering by the Muslim invader was wrong.
Both meekness and forgiveness are decisions we CHOOSE to make. Feelings cannot have anything to do with such decisions. In the Bible, Jesus is described as 'meek'. As I have been taught, in the Greek of the Bible, the word 'meek' does not mean weakness instead, 'meek' means a strong person or animal CHOOSING to submit to someone, in Jesus' case, God the Father. After suffering humiliation, beatings, whipping and crucifixion, Jesus still asked God the Father, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. " This is what we are called to do and Francis' demonstrations of forgiveness are a good example.
When Francis was elected Pope, I prayed that he would bring his church back to a time of humility, to the 'original' church, as founded by the apostles. His humility is refreshing.

Let them do their worst - if they can do any worse than what they’ve done. They have been criminal since the 700s, and have not advanced in civilization since then. I’d criminalize the practice of Islam within the borders of any civilized nation. Russia knows. And they deal with them as barbarically as they deserve.

This is a Pope who understands Islam and all that it entails. Watch and see.
