PASADENA, Calif. Our universe didn't need any divine help to burst into being, famed cosmologist Stephen Hawking told a packed house here at the California Institute of Technology Tuesday night.
Many people had begun queuing up for free tickets to Hawking's 8:00 p.m lecture, titled "The Origin of the Universe," 12 hours earlier. By 6:00 p.m. local time, the line was about a quarter-mile long.
A second auditorium and a Jumbotron-equipped lawn, which itself was jammed with an estimated 1,000 viewers, were needed to handle the crowd. At least one person was observed offering $1,000 for a ticket, with no success.
Stephen Hawking began the event by reciting an African creation myth, and rapidly moved on to big questions such as, Why are we here?
He noted that many people still seek a divine solution to counter the theories of curious physicists, and at one point, he quipped, What was God doing before the divine creation? Was he preparing hell for people who asked such questions?
After outlining the historical theological debate about how the universe was created, Hawking gave a quick review of more scientific cosmological explanations, including Fred Hoyle and Thomas Golds steady-state theory. This idea hypothesizes that there is no beginning and no end and that galaxies continue to form from spontaneously created matter.
Hawking said this theory and several other ideas don't hold up, citing recent observations by space telescopes and other instruments.
After giving a brief historical background on relativistic physics and cosmology, Hawking discussed the idea of a repeating Big Bang. He noted that in the 1980s, he and physicist Roger Penrose proved the universe could not bounce when it contracted, as had been theorized.

You use the word “faith” dismissively. Faith is not such a bad thing. There are some things you can’t see without it. Faith is a necessity for getting in touch with God.
But a more important word in this context is trust. Trust that God is good, that He intends the best for you. That He wants most of all to be in communion with you. The only way to God is to trust Him.
Jesus said, “For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” It requires a step out, a willingness to submit to His way, not our way.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV)
Good job! Didn’t even take two weeks. LOL
Proven troll in three posts.
We have Athiests but they tend to be more respectful.

...he’s gone...talk about yer big bang theory. Adler proved it can be done.
Is it petty to care for those who enhance your family and to reject those who destroy your family?
If you’re a family guy, do you care for the true teachers and reject the drug dealers?
Thanks for the ping!
So very true, dear sister in Christ!
Spot on. Human beings desire worship and in this case that desire is directed at Mr. Hawking. Years ago it was Joseph Campbell. Liberals keep seeking a savior and like people in every age and time, they miss the real one.
Hawking is totally overrated as are all atheist scientists. They hate God and view religion as evil. They’re theologically immature and it causes them to accept bad theory.
How is it that Theory M can violate the First Law of Thermodynamics?
One’s just a theory the other is called a law.
That’s interesting. I think what’s happened is the concept of what worship is has been lost. It isn’t a negative event for either side.
God doesn’t need the worship, we need God. If God is love (agape) and we his children then the direction of respect and love isn’t one way. He loves us more than we’re even capable of loving ourselves.
Fundamentally, the faith v. reason line is a form of bigotry and should be treated as the straw man it really is. People of faith don’t lose their ability to reason. There isn’t a conflict and I know of plenty of atheists that believe in all kinds of nonsense - ZPG or NPG, global warming, socialism/communism, etc. These are the religions of the “intellectuals”. They’re more easily disproved than a belief in God.
My grandmother's generation was the last in my family to have been devoted Christian believers.
God's demonstrated indifference in her hour of need turned my father's generation, then mine, then my children's, to agnostics and atheists.
An all-knowing God by definition knew that would be the result.
So among all the Christian sects, only the Calvinists to me have a theology which fits the facts on the ground. If God exists, he has tapped us for the un-elect.

.
Embraced ignorance like that is self fulfilling, enjoy your eternity!
: )
In that case, I guess we know to whom goes the credit for the bad times. And, to whom do we give thanks for all the good times (especially from we who have lived in Western Civilization all, or most of, our lives)?
But "Christianity is a good thing to have in the culture" is not at all the same thing as "Christianity is true".
Still less is it the same thing as "Christianity is true, and Notary Sojac is one of God's elect".
You sound like one of those Christians who will chortle with unrestrained delight while viewing the tortures of the damned in hell.
Have a nice day.
Per instructions, I leave it to Notary Sojac to assign blame or not to assign blame as he sees fit. Its called free will. As for me and my house, we will follow The Lord, as God gives us the light to discern His Word. I put myself before no one. Again, per instructions.
You expected someone to beg you to change your mind?
Waste of time.
