A retired auxiliary bishop in Detroit has told supporters of same-sex marriage that they should continue receiving Communion, directly contradicting a statement by Archbishop Allen Vigneron.
“Don’t stop going to Communion. You’re okay,” Bishop Thomas Gumbleton advised proponents of gay marriage. He was speaking just days after Archbishop Vigneron had said that Catholics who disagree with the Church on the definition of marriage should refrain from Communion. The archbishop had said that receiving Communion while being in fundamental disagreement with the Church “would result in publicly renouncing one's integrity and logically bring shame for a double-dealing that is not unlike perjury."

How few people remember that Holy Communion is the only Sacrament that comes to us with both a blessing and an explicit curse:

Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord.
"Guilty of the body and blood of the Lord." Blood guilt for the unworthy reception of this Sacrament.
And what does (retired) Bishop Gumbleton say?
"Hey, no big deal."

Gumbleton is a familiar name from the days when the dissident bishops were riding high.
He favored gay priests and bishops and once appeared at Mass wearing a mitre “on which were symbols of the cross, a rainbow and a pink triangle.” (Wikipedia)
Evidently his brother came out of the closet, but I always suspected that Gumbleton himself was part of the gay mafia that infested the Church in America at that time.
He has no authority to teach Catholics anything. But regrettably he will be used by the mass media—as he was in the old day—to confuse as many Catholics as possible.

Sounds like this guy was a radical priest who got promoted due to the Peter principle (and I don’t mean “Saint Peter”.) Gumbleton’s Sunday homilies from St Leo’s parish are documented by the *National Catholic Reporter*, where he also wrote a regular column. NCR is so anti-Catholic that it has been asked to no longer call itself “Catholic”. It has refused.

That is what I thought, when the most prominent Catholics in America, who also lead the pro-same sex marriage/abortion party in America, which wins the majority of Catholic votes in America, can go to the Vatican itself and receive communion only weeks ago to celebrate the new Pope, then the outrage is a little hard to believe, in fact all the related theatrics of this that we have watched for our entire lives lack credibility, we have been reading this story or one like it for decades and decades.

DETROIT, Michigan, January 26, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, who is known as an activist for homosexuality in the Church, has handed in his resignation to the Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI is expected to announce the resignation today.
Bishop Gumbleton resisted mandatory retirement last year when he reached the age of 75, asking to continue on as Auxiliary Bishop to Detroit Cardinal Adam Maida. His request, given to the head of the Congregation for Bishops, Cardinal Giovanni Re, was denied.
“Some time ago he indicated that my request to defer my resignation was not acceptable,” Bishop Gumbleton said in an open letter to his parishioners at St. Leo’s Church.
Bishop Gumbleton has spent his years of spiritual authority in the Catholic Church working to promote the homosexual lifestyle. He is affiliated with numerous gay activist organizations such as the Triangle Foundation, the Rainbow Sash Movement, and New Ways Ministry, SHARE, and Call to Action. In 1995 he received the Call to Action leadership award.
He has been a prolific speaker and writer on the subject of homosexual acceptance in the Church, openly challenging the Church’s teaching that homosexual activity is “intrinsically disordered.”
Speaking to a conference for New Ways Ministry, a psuedo-Catholic movement that has been banned by the Church for openly promoting homosexual behavior, Bishop Gumbleton once outlined his position on homosexuality:
“…homosexual people are not disordered people. They are psychologically healthy people. ... Homosexuals are as healthy as anyone else.”
Bishop Gumbleton has recently been campaigning against the Vatican’s direction that homosexual men should not be admitted to the priesthood. Gumbleton revealed earlier this month that 60 years ago, as a teenager, he was sexually molested by a Catholic priest. He has called for legislative changes that would allow time-sensitive allegations of priestly abuse come to trial, a suggestion that has triggered intensive controversy.
Gumbleton maintains that his work as a Bishop will continue, despite having retirement forced on him. It is not clear, however, if Cardinal Maida will allow him to remain in his position as pastor to St. Leo’s Church. Archdiocesan spokesman Ned McGrath suggested Cardinal Maida would raise major questions over Bishop Gumbleton’s history of activism, according to the Detroit Free Press.
