Argentine priest kidnapped in Dirty War reconciled w/ Pope Francis (Don't blame Pope for Pinochet)

An Argentine priest kidnapped and tortured during the South American country’s “dirty war” said Friday that he has since reconciled with Pope Francis.

Jesuit Fr. Francisco Jalics was kidnapped in 1976 along with a fellow priest by the military junta who ran the government as a dictatorship from 1976-1983, Argentina’s “dirty war.” The Associated Press reported Friday that the priest, through a statement on the German Jesuits’ website, said he and Francis met “years later,” believed to be in 2000, to discuss the events.

“Following that, we celebrated Mass publicly together and hugged solemnly. I am reconciled to the events and consider the matter to be closed,” he said in the statement.

Support NCR's coverage of the conclave. Donate now! Jalics’ kidnapping came while Francis (then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio) served at the Jesuit provincial in the country (1973-1979).

Since his ascendance to the papacy, some have renewed criticism of his decision to mandate that Jesuits remain in their roles and at their parishes, instead of entering into political activism and “base communities.”

The AP report also stated that Bergoglio withdrew support for Jalics and Fr. Orlando Yorio, after both refused his order to abandon their work in the slums for their own safety. The kidnappers killed Yorio, but Jalics survived and now lives in southern Germany.

Marxists jumped in within minute of Pope Francis' election, to start flinging mud at him as a "collaborator" with Pinochet during Argentina's "Dirty War" of 1976-83.

The "other F-word" (Fascist) is already being applied to him on the left-wing blogs.

Problem is: the one man that "the narrative" cannot ignore --- Fr. Francisco Jalic, who was kidnapped and tortured by Pinochet's secret police during the Dirty War --- says he does not consider Pope Francis guilty of Pinochet's crimes, and considers the matter closed.

Why is Pinochet of Chile getting the blame for Argentina’s Dirty War? Other than the usual leftist cant of “It’s Goldberg’s fault.”

Err, Pinochet was the general who took over the government of Chile after an anti-Marxist coup. The military junta in Argentina that made so many people "disappear" were a group of thugs whose denouement came at the hands of Lady Thatcher when they were stupid enough to take on Britain over the Falklands. In comparison Pinochet genuinely saved Chile from a Marxist takeover and ably ran the country.

Augusto Pinochet Ugarte was president of Chile, not Argentina. Jorge Rafael Videla led the junta that ruled Argentina following the coup of March 24, 1976.

Translation: the two priests were getting involved with pro-Communist agitation, Bergoglio ordered them to get back to doing their real jobs and stop endangering themselves. Sounds like Bergoglio gave them good advice.

Of course, the Marxists will try to paint Bergoglio as being a death-squad leader.
