E.J. Dionne -- The best choice for pope? A nun
CMR ^ | February 16, 2013 | Patrick Archbold

Posted on 02/16/2013 3:56:06 PM PST by NYer

The media silly season prior to a conclave may have just reached its peak.

The media has been giving all kinds of silly advice to the cardinal-electors and the future pontiff, but E.J. Dionne's idiocy takes the cake.

In giving up the papacy, Pope Benedict XVI was brave and bold. He did the unexpected for the good of the Catholic Church. And when it selects a new pope next month, the College of Cardinals should be equally brave and bold. It is time to elect a nun as the next pontiff.
...
A sister as pope could also resolve what might seem a contradiction in Catholic theology. More than Protestants, Catholics are profoundly devoted to the Virgin Mary — and few were as devoted as the late Pope John Paul II, who declared that Mary “sustains the spiritual life of us all, and encourages us, even in suffering, to have faith and hope.” A church for which the Blessed Mother plays such an important role should certainly be comfortable with female leadership.

While support for a stronger role for women in the church tends to be a “liberal” cause, many faithful conservatives also cite the work of nuns as reinforcing their devotion to the church — from the sisters who educated them in parish schools to the work of Mother Teresa’s religious order.
To even critique the writing of (e)EJ(it) is to give it more credibility than it deserves. It is infantile in the extreme.

That this is what passes for legitimate commentary is a paper such as the WaPo is all the evidence one would need to secure an indictment of irrelevancy.

“The best choice for replacing E. J. Dionne — a rational, thinking human being. God knows, he’s nothing more than a chimpanzee.”

Insulting chimpanzees will not endear you to this crowd.

I've read plenty of Dionne's columns over the years (my local rag reprints his scribblings), and I've yet to read one where Dionne didn't think Big Government was the best solution to a problem. His faith in the government, like most libs, amounts to sort of a religious belief. In the worlds of the Dionnes, the Dowds, and all the other leftist scribblers, people are helpless pawns at the mercy of ruthless corporations when they're not getting gunned down by toothless NRA members who spit tobacco juice on their lifeless corpses.

I wonder how these people think America ever became great. Or do they think we're great? I would think they don't.

American Nuns Hope For Sister-Friendly New Pope

by Barbie Latza Nadeau Feb 13, 2013 12:04 PM EST

American nuns—fiercely condemned under Pope Benedict for being too “radical”—are looking forward to a fresh start with a new pontiff.

Of all the scandals that have been pinned to Benedict XVI’s papacy, perhaps none has been more divisive than the so-called clampdown on American nuns last April.  Its no wonder, then, that sisters across America are hoping that the next pope gives them a fairer shake.  In an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast, the head of the largest group of American nuns shares what she is looking for in a new leader.

The American nun scandal came to a head last spring when the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued an eight-page doctrinal assessment of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), an umbrella group with more than 1,500 members representing 80 percent of American nuns. In it, they chastised the American sisters for “pushing radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith.” They also accused the sisters of staying silent on a number of the church’s teachings on sensitive topics like euthanasia, women’s ordination, and same-sex marriage. A fierce backlash ensued when Father James Martin, a Jesuit priest and author of several faith-based books, called on the Twitterverse to start tweeting support for nuns under #whatsistersmeantome.  More than a million tweets supporting the sisters followed.  “There is a danger of backlash because of the esteem [in which] so many Catholics hold nuns,” Martin told The Daily Beast at the height of the scandal.  “For many Catholics, sisters are the glue that holds the church together.”

Not so. Members of the conclave can vote for whomever they desire; in 1958 the Archbishop of Milan got seveal votes. I think the only requirement is that person selected be ordainable (i.e., not a woman).

Maybe the liberals are right about gun control. Here is one person who should not be trusted with pointy objects let alone a gun.

I’m all for well-read popes. But I also want them to be. . . how do I put this?. . . not too clueless about the realities of the world. Dolan is orthodox, but hasn’t impressed me as “getting it” really.

Come to think of it, the Apostle’s Creed ... “Our Father” ... implies that only a male can be the “Holy Father.”

Well, I sent my resume to the boys in the College of Cardinals. I think I’m a long shot...kind of a dark horse. I have a better chance for a second interview than almost any nun.

Well I admit I haven’t been following him too closely but I like the fact that he has a big mouth. Benedict was like a zombie, I can’t remember the last time I heard that guy talk. With all the attacks Christians have to put up with today, I want somebody who is going to open their yap.

You do realize FR's management team is predominantly Roman Catholic ~ as are the biggest supporters, and the best posters (and if they are not Catholic they are at least Christian or Jewish traditionalists).

FR is simply not typified with folks like the spawn of the antichrist over at DU, Washington Post, and all the other Farleftwingtard extremists.

Pope Alexander was a priest for one day and they made him pope. Very interesting guy ~ rather like a combination arbitrage manager, mafia don and guerrilla fighter who could also sail a ship, read, write, and more or less start sticking a small country together.
