The entire College of Cardinals has been appointed by Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI, therefore its extraordinarily unlikely that the next pope will not reflect their collective interpretation of the council, which means in worldly terms, a conservative pope, said R.R. Reno, editor of First Things magazine and professor of theology at Creighton University, in Omaha, Neb. So the question is whether the College of Cardinals wants another professor pope or do they want someone to kind of deal with the Vatican bureaucracy, or a diplomat?
Im not a handicapper and I couldnt begin to speculate, he said. But the common wisdom is these things swing like a pendulum.
William Hill, Britain's largest bookmaker, offered odds of 3/1 against for Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze, who is 80 and was once the world's youngest bishop. Odds were set at 7/2 for Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet and Ghanian Cardinal Peter Turkson.
Irish bookmaker Paddy Power had the same trio as frontrunners, but made Ouellet the favorite. Britain's Ladbrokes had Turkson the leading contender.
Other possible successors include Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, the archbishop of Vienna and Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras.
Whomever is selected, Reno said, will have the initial task of providing a strong, clear identity and purpose internationally, particularly in Europe and throughout Latin America.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York is a long shot at best, Reno said.
Its not clear that the rest of the church would accept American hegemony, he said, despite the fact that Dolan backs the popes conservative vision.

When pressed for whom he thought was the leading candidate worldwide, Bretzke selected the 71-year-old Scola, who was appointed Archbishop of Milan by Pope Benedict XVI in June 2011 after serving as Patriarch of Venice

Obama?
When does God get involved?
It has to be someone who is not going to be squishy on teachings. IOW no political correctness to make the left happy.
Voldemort...
lol
The first is--if all other things are equal between two candidates--is that they often favor a short-long-short cycle when it comes to the length of their tenure. If we followed this logic, John Paul II had a long reign; Benedict had a relatively short reign; the next Pope might be a younger one, capable of a long reign.
The second thing I read was this: any one going into the conclave expecting to be Pope, typically comes out as a cardinal.
I want to see a younger African who is doctrinally conservative. Arinze is a good man but is old. Forget an Italian, forget the Austrian, the Canadian might be good.. but an African will knock it out of the ball park. Leave our Uncle Timmy here in New York—we like him.
It’s His Church.
He is involved.
lol!!
Perfect.
As the man says, an African will knock it out of the park for a touchdown, all others are either going to miss the boat or are already under the bus!
Cardinal Angelo Sodano
Cardinal Ouellet is my preference at this point.
I would think that having seen how the ravages of age have plagued Benedict and cut short his ministry, that yes, they will pick a relatively young man this time.
Someone I haven’t seen mentioned, Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun.
I think they should pick an Arab for Pope. Imagine if the Patriarch of Lebanon was elected, he’s a 72 year old Cardinal.
It could carry as much symbolism as when John-Paul II was elected in 1978, not to mention be a beacon of hope for Christians in the Middle East.
Apparently someone took offense at it, even though IMO it was hilarious! For the others who missed it, it was a political cartoon hosted at the blog Mommylife of Obama dressed like a pope, sitting on a throne in the "Church Of Obama", in front of stained glass festooned with "O" emblems, an announcement board declaring "why your beliefs mean nothing" and the Declaration of Independence stuffed in a shredder. Obama holds out his left hand to a nearby cardinal and tells him that "you may kiss my ring".
