Poll: Most Americans Say Employers Should Cover Contraception

(RNS) Most Americans say that employers -- even religious ones -- should provide birth control coverage to their employees, according to a survey released on Monday (Dec. 3).

The poll by LifeWay Research also showed that almost two-thirds of Americans (63 percent) believe businesses should be required to provide the coverage for free, even if contraception conflicts with the owner’s religious ethics.

As part of the Affordable Care Act, the 2010 health care reform law, President Obama issued regulations that require most employers, including some religious ones like Catholic colleges and hospitals, to provide birth control coverage. The administration has said it may expand the policy to accommodate additional religious organizations.

In the meantime, however, dozens of Catholic dioceses, as well as Christian colleges and business owners who oppose contraception on moral or religious grounds, have sued to block the mandate from taking effect.

Last Wednesday (Nov. 28), a federal appeals court in St. Louis sided with a Catholic business owner by issuing a temporary injunction temporarily halting the mandate. Federal judges in Michigan and Denver have also issued temporary injunctions blocking the mandate, according to Reuters.

Most Americans, however, believe that businesses (63 percent), nonprofit organizations (56 percent) and even Catholic and other religious schools, hospitals and charities (53 percent) should provide free birth control coverage to employees.

Just change the question and watch that 63 percent drop fast!
New question.

Would you except the Government assigning a person to you that you would be required to pay out of your pocket fro the contraception every year?
The vast majority I would wager would say NO FRIGGIN WAY.

Employers should fire most Americans.

Worthless.

The only way a employer should have to cover Contraception for his Employees is if that Employer is running a whore house.

Since when is an employer responsible for anyone’s sex life.
If he isn’t the one doing the sex with her why should he pay for her contraception?

The world is going frickin nuts.Everybody feels entitled to a freebie.

This is so far outside the line of acceptable government actions that I cannot comprehend how anyone could favor this mandate. To compel a person to violate core religious beliefs is an act of pure evil. Apparently, that is also part of the Dem party line.

Let’s see: My body, MY choice ....

but YOU, the taxpayer, have to subsidize those choices, because, well, uh, I’d rather spend the money on a new Coach bag, cigs, and a new set of gel nails.

I don’t recall being asked. But since it’s out there now:

I have no problem with employers paying for contraception coverage... so long as employers can ask you about your religious views on the subject and make their own decision IF they, as an employer, will provide said coverage.

You go to work for a business owned by a Catholic, you shouldn’t expect the owners to violate their beliefs to provide you with contraception. If they CHOOSE to provide said coverage, it is their decision.

How about a compromise?

Any employer that pays for contraception is off the hook from paying for abortion and/or pregnancy (at their discretion).

It’s easier to keep from getting pregnant or getting someone else pregnant than it is to keep from catching the common cold.

Where is the self control in these pathetic animals? I say animals, because humans are not supposed to be slave to their hormones.

You don’t want to have a child, then don’t indulge in what makes them. Idiots!

Good thing we don’t live in a democracy. In a republic, the majority doesn’t get to impose it’s will if it violates the Constitution.

Back in the day, my OLD employer had a set way for these things: fire everyone, and have them apply for the jobs again. Like musical chairs.

Well, I’ll say this.

If people don’t make a stand now, then there will not be anything left to stand for.

Sure, why not? Employers and “the rich” should pay for everything. If a middle class person wants something but doesn’t have the income to pay for it, then employers and the rich should. This type of response has nothing to do with religion or moral issues. It has everything to do with people being conditioned for 80+ years of the Welfare State that someone else should pay for things that the people want.

So sad the way people are polled. A better question would be: "Would you be willing only to work for employers who offer free birth control".

Better to poll people on how they will conduct their lives in light of their personal beliefs rather than polling how to impose their opinion on others.
