The most anti-Catholic American president ever scooped up the Catholic vote again, winning half of all Catholics. This is down four points from 2008, but it is still an impressive feat after four years of persecuting the Church.
Historians will no doubt record the grim irony of his achievement with some wonder. He has now won the Catholic vote twice and boasts an honorary degree in law from one of the Church's most prestigious universities, all while breaking her. Saul Alinsky, who pioneered the technique of bamboozling and exploiting the Church, would be proud.
Obama also won the religious vote in general over Romney 50 to 48, another remarkable accolade for a party that tried to remove God from its platform earlier this year. That the Republicans couldn't win the religious vote amidst Obama's open war on religion is either a testimony to its ineptitude or calls into question the Romney campaign's decision to focus almost exclusively on the economy. The last Republican to win, George W. Bush, thumped John Kerry in the religious vote 51 to 48.
Romney fared better than Obama amongst regular churchgoers. But Obama still managed to poach a fair number of these from him. Almost four out of ten church-going Catholics voted for Obama and 55 percent of Catholics who go to Mass a "few times a month" voted for him, according to the Pew Forum.
The work of Obama's allies within the Church paid off. Obama's Fifth Columnists steered money into his campaign (Jesuit college and universities raised donations for him), honored his HHS secretary at Georgeown even after she hatched the contraceptive mandate, erected pro-Obama Catholic front groups like Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, motivated Catholic college students to get out and vote for him, and spread propaganda through Sisters Carol Keehan and Simone Campbell that Obama posed no threat to the Church.
Hispanic Catholics, under the tutelage of the Catholic left, voted for Obama over Romney 75 to 21. That was up three points from 2008.
Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, California, who is Congressman Paul Ryan's nemesis, complained earlier in the year that the bishops had given too much aid to "anti-Obama" forces. If that only were true. Once again, the bishops proved feckless and divided. Some bishops raised their voices against Obama; most didn't. Nor did the bishops counter Joe Biden's misrepresentations of "Catholic social doctrine" and "de fide" abortion teaching late in the campaign.
Plenty of mixed signals were sent: depending on which bishop was speaking, Biden and Paul Ryan were either equally good Catholics or equally bad ones. One bishop wrote to his flock to tell them that Ryan was as "inconsistent" in his adherence to Church teaching as Biden. Such bishops served as useful idiots for Biden, who used a campaign commercial featuring images of a crucifix to sell voters on the idea that the Obama administration embodied Catholic social justice.
The Obama campaign was worried enough about the Catholic vote to cut a few ads and set up a Catholics for Obama web site. But given the mixed signals of the bishops and given the unwillingness of Mitt Romney to hit Obama on his secularism, liberals didn't have much to fear. Obama shrewdly sensed that the HHS mandate would prove a greater political boon than liability. It nudged up the female vote and didn't cost him the Catholic one.
The Obama campaign had found a fallen-away Catholic, Michael Wear, to serve as its "faith vote coordinator." According to CNN, Wear was moved from the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to that position in order to put out fires related to the HHS-mandate backlash.
George Soros-backed Catholic front groups also went to work putting out those fires, whose operatives enjoyed ties to Catholic chanceries. Until earlier this year, one of the US bishops's chief political advisers was John Carr, a former White House staffer under President Jimmy Carter. (Carr organized for Carter an event that openly touted support for "abortion" and the use of the federal government's power to promote "family planning" and "homosexual rights.")
Obama's divide-and-conquer strategy was bound to work again in a Church still salted with such operatives. The unholy alliance that he formed with the Church in 1980s Chicago remains intact.
Exactly. Jesuits love the term social justice. I see a lot of Catholics from my under-grad university celebrating Obama’s victory. I use the term Catholic loosely. The Jesuits are a pox on the Catholic Church. They should have been kicked out of the Church long ago. They see no problem with homosexual marriage, and believe that social justice trumps abortion. It’s like a whole religious sect of Joe Bidens.
**Im Protestant **
So what are Protestants going to do about the 95% of Black Protestants that voted for Obama?
Actually, she's one of those people that you can't ever respond to because she NEVER stops talking! (Did I mention she's a South Boston Irish girl?)
Paul Ryan explains both in this thread, but it didn't get out to the Catholics -- I know I tried here on FR!
Better to stay home than abandon your principals and vote for a Methodist, right?
Neumayr writes fairly good comedy.
8 out of 10 white Protestants voted for Romney...95% of black Protestants voted for Obama...
6 out of 10 White Catholics voted for Romney...75% of Mexican Catholics voted for Obama...

As far as anecdotal evidence is concerned, at my (Catholic) church, the priest definitely made it clear that to vote for a pro-abortion president (in addition to the other issues) is complicit with evil. He made a great analogy saying that if one candidate wanted to bring back slavery, he would never have a chance, and likewise, if Catholics voted unanimously in line with Catholic teaching regarding politicians who are pro-abortion, pro-gay 'marriage', etc, they would not have enough votes to be elected either. To be fair, I am in the South, so far fewer libs in the congregation to begin with.
Precisely. For us little "Pay, Pray, and Obey" Catholics, our job is just to sit down and shut up. These people have been the squeaky wheels getting the grease and attention for the last sixty years, and nothing is going to be changing anytime soon. "Hunker down" works here, too. Praise God, there are a few righteous priests and bishops who will be there for us, but the only "Catholics" that interest the presstitutes and the moral cripples in government are the leftists that Soros bought a long time ago. His plan is proceeding on schedule.
It’s not mentioned at all at the Masses I attend. What are you talking about?
ping to self on HHS failure
My university had a large Dominican and Franciscan presence, although we’d occasionally get adjunct Jesuit professors.
I loved the Dominican clerical professors, they were genuine Catholics who defended the dogma and were unashamed of their faith.
The Jesuits always seemed to be too educated for their own good. They always talked about how to talk about God in “modernity” and the social justice garbage.
The dead wood needs to be purged from the Church, and the Jesuits are heavily compromised.
**we shouldnt hate those with whom we disagree**
True. Hate is part of killing — “Thou shalt not kill.”
It doesn’t mean we can’t dislike Obama or disagree with him and the dimocrats — but the hate needs to stay out of the picture.
That is true, but it's largely because of the Evangelical vote. The overall Protestant vote is a little higher than the Catholic. The White mainstream Protestant vote was on par with the White Catholic (possibly even lower). But the Evangelical vote was much more strongly for Romney and that pulled the overall White Protestant vote well above the White Catholic vote.
One thing to bear in mind, though: traditionally, Catholics who never went to church still identified themselves as Catholics. Protestants who tricked away from their churches were, I believe, more likely to describe themselves as not belonging to any religion. Those who identified themselves as Evangelicals were very likely to be frequent churchgoers and very committed believers. I don't know if all this still applies today, but traditionally, comparing Catholics with Protestants or with Evangelicals was a tricky business.
As a Catholic, I’m disgusted.
You can only serve one God, and Obama’s humanism is the God that half of self-identifying Catholics chose.
There is no excuse for it. The Church was clear concerning the issue.
Fear of losing membership should not drive teaching, but I think it often does in Protestant and Catholic services alike. There are some Protestant sects that appear to be all-in on humanism.
How should I know? My guess is nothing. No one is going to do anything but a few will bitch - and some of those are just making money off the bitching by preaching to the choir. But nothing will happen. As Axelrod said - "it's baked in".
It probably just boils down to a race to see which group will enthusiastically march itself to the ovens, Jews or Catholics.
Some Catholic bishops like Gomez in the Los Angeles Archdiocese and Mahony before him cater to immigrant issues as a priority over Church doctrine and the evil the Rats have inflicted on their flock ( abortion, gay marriage, HHS mandate etc) are less important than amnesty. The chickens have home to roost.
Is anybody surprised? Does St. John Fisher ring any bells? I may be wrong but I believe he was the only catholic bishop to stand up to King Henry VIII. And was beheaded for it.
Anybody else besides me see a great falling away from Christianity? Is it any wonder that laxity in morals and from the pulpit has brought us to the point were at now?
