With the recent proclamation of a Green Bay bishop that Christians who vote for someone supporting the gay or abortion agenda is putting their soul in jeopardy, theres been an increase in the amount of email in my inbox asking my take on whether it is a sin for Christians to be Democrats. I think a lot of people assume this is a difficult subject for me to address. I hate to disappoint them, but its not.
I recently read an article from a self-proclaimed Christian Democrat explaining why they would be voting for Obama, and to a larger degree, supporting the Democrat Party. I am intentionally not linking to the original article for a reason. The article was full of the very kind of fine-sounding arguments that Paul warns us in Colossians to be on guard against. Given the sorry state of Biblical Christianity in America, I know that several of these arguments could easily ensnare and trap a lot of confused Christians and I wont willfully provide a potential stumbling block to any believer.
It should be an axiom for Christ followers that while our faith should inform our politics, our politics should never inform our faith. But this particular author, as is often the case with Christian Democrats, has made an a priori commitment to supporting the Democrats and then seeks to find faith-based reasons to justify it. But heres the uncomfortable truth such individuals must confront: while its certainly true that not every Republican is worthy of our support as Christians, any individual who runs under a platform that justifies the legal slaughter of innocent life made in the image of God is an unacceptable choice. Period.

A sin? Probably not a sin.
But an incredibly stupid thing to do.
It is in my house. Democrat majorities mean more dead unborn babies. That’s sinful.
Yep.
Part of the dimocrat platform is the support of
abortion — that’s baby killing,
euthanasia — that’s killing the elderly
same-sex marriage — not what the Bible asks between a man and a woman
contraception — that’s playing God and stopping the conception of a baby
embryonic stem-cell research — more baby killing
Now what is your answer?
I, personally cannot support these things that go against the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Church.
Yes....next question.
At this point, yes, pretty much think so.
As one FReeper’s tagline put it: “God is not a Republican, but Satan definitely is a Democrat.”
You might go to hell if you vote for them!
This is not just in Green Bay.
You cannot vote for someone who supports abortion if you have a choice and still call yourself a Catholic. Regrettably, many people do that and call themselves Catholic anyway.
Enthusiastically voting for the continuous blood sacrifice of tens of millions of defenseless children to Moloch is a sin? That’s crazy fundie talk.
Render Unto Caesar By Archbishop Charles Chaput
During the 2008 election cycle a Catholic legal scholar, Douglas Kmiec attempted to use the Archbishops book as a basis for supporting, then candidate Obama.
The Archbishop objected:
“Unfortunately, he either misunderstands or misuses my words, and he couldn’t be more mistaken
”
“I believe that Senator Obama, whatever his other talents, is the most committed ‘abortion-rights’ presidential candidate of either major party since the Roe v. Wade abortion decision in 1973,” he added.
“Despite what Kmiec suggests, the party platform Senator Obama runs on this year is not only aggressively ‘pro-choice;’ it has also removed any suggestion that killing an unborn child might be a regrettable thing.”
The prelate affirmed that the platform of the Democratic Party that emerged from its national convention in August “is clearly anti-life.”
“Kmiec argues that there are defensible motives to support Senator Obama,” continued Archbishop Chaput. “Speaking for myself, I do not know any proportionate reason that could outweigh more than 40 million unborn children killed by abortion and the many millions of women deeply wounded by the loss and regret abortion creates.”
A well-formed Christian conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program or an individual law that contradicts the fundamental contents of faith and morals
Voting for a Demoncrat is like losing your virginity to a rapist.
as a Christian, i believe it is a sin to vote against one’s own conscience.
i’m with madison:
“It is the duty of every man to render to the Creator such homage and such only as he believes to be acceptable to him. this duty is precedent, both in order of time and in degree of obligation, to the claims of the Civil Society.” (from Imprimus, Sept. 2012).
Kmiec is a CINO
Has Kmiec converted/reverted?
Too many CINOs for me to keep track of....sorry, I don’t know.
“Kmiec is a CINO”
A point made all too clear by AB Chaput’s rebuttal.
Sadly a Republican vote doesn't mean less dead babies.
Just look at the lip service they give the pro-life: They add a "no rape/incest exception" to the stated planks... and nominate someone who says "of course I support the rape/incest exception to banning abortions."
In most cases...and “gods in embryo” competing with THE GOD as a rival god...
