Woman accused of hitting pastor in the head with a Bible

A woman is accused of using God's word as a weapon against her pastor in their Mid-South church.

A 63-year-old church member used a Bible to hit the pastor in the head after he told her and other members to leave or he would call the Sheriff.

"He's got the demon in him," Ina Garrett said.

Ina Garrett, a life-long member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Selmer, decided to knock that demon out of pastor Leon Taylor.

"One of the older church members came up and struck the pastor with a Bible," McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck said.

"I hit him in the head," Garrett admitted.

The sheriff arrested 63-year-old Ina Garrett and charged her with assault.

The pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church showed us a photo of welts on the side of his head.

"Evil is evil," Pastor Leon Taylor said. "You understand what I'm saying, and bullying is bullying and that's what they have done."

There is a rift among church members at Mount Zion. The members chose Pastor Taylor to lead the church a year ago.

Deacon Robert Shumpert, Ina Garrett and other members say they decided they did not like Taylor and wanted him out of the 30 member church. The pastor says the church members who wanted him out were disruptive.

"The next Sunday we went right back and the door was locked," church member Ann Prather said.

Taylor showed us video of him telling the church he is tired of it, as Ina Garrett yells from the church.

"Would you leave, would you leave? Would you leave! Call the Sheriff, call the sheriff! You're trying to put us out. You're out. What is it about out you don't understand?" she yelled.

Sheriff Buck showed up and tried to talk with the unhappy church members. And sometime after that Buck says Ina Garrett hit the pastor with the Bible. The sheriff escorted the disruptive members out and arrested Garrett.

"Have you ever heard of anything like that before? I have never in my life," Sheriff Buck said.

The unhappy church members, some who have been members for 65 years, will likely have to take the pastor to court. He says he is not planning to leave. We'll keep you updated on what happens.

There is just too much to choose from. About half a dozen popes are known to have been murdered and twice that many are thought to have been murdered. And then there are the many sins carried out by the RCC in God’s name.

Whacking a preacher with a Bible is wrong, but it’s laughable for any Catholic to pretend his church is above it.

I hear hitting with the Bible (Old Testament, not New, which we disregard) is something from Sola Scriptura, isn't it?

Something like that happened locally. Pastor locked the congregation out of the building. I don't think I ever heard how it got resolved.

'Bad spirits' led man to attack priest in church

"Garda Trevor Madden told prosecutor Fiona McGowan that the first man Farrell attacked was a Romanian national who was sitting with his wife and child outside the church at around 9.30am.

Constantine Rostas told gardai later that Farrell jumped on him and tried to dislodge his eye with his finger. Mr Rostas managed to push Farrell off but was left with a blood clot.

Farrell then went into church and took a ciborium -- an ornate cup used to hold wafers -- and lunged at the head of Fr Patrick McManus, striking him with it and then chasing the priest around the church.

He then attacked Michael Dillon, an elderly sacristan. He held Mr Dillon in a headlock and tried to gouge his eyes out."

Priest attacked during Lithuania mass

"A Roman Catholic priest has been set on fire by an assailant while giving mass in the small Lithuanian town of Jovana.

The assailant reportedly charged the priest, Remigijus Kuprys, 46, sprayed him with flammable liquid and set him on fire with a cigarette lighter."

http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19910321&slug=1273059>Woman Shoots Priest In Beacon Hill Church

"Some parishioners were in the church for an 8 a.m. Mass when the shooting occurred shortly before. The church is at 15th Avenue South and South McClellan Street.

Mary Katona, who was in the church at the time of the shooting, said she saw the woman at the back of the church about 7:30 a.m.

Naumes, who had been near the altar, walked to a small room where he put on his vestments for the service, Katona said. The woman followed him into the vestry and shut the door. A short time later, Katona and others said they heard three or four shots.

Naumes then pushed the woman out of the room and held the door so she couldn't get back in, Katona said.

The woman then left the church.

When the parishioners got to the priest, it appeared he had been shot in the head and the shoulder. But they said he was coherent and calm."

Transsexual attacks priest during Mass in Italy

"Police in Milan detained a Brazilian transsexual on Sunday after he stripped naked in front of the altar during Mass and began to attack the priest who was presiding over the Mass.

The incident occurred at the Church of St. Babila at the 8:30am Mass on Sunday.

According to ANSA news agency, the subject entered the church and approached the altar, where he stripped naked. “Afterwards he took a pole used by the sacristan to close doors and approached the celebrating priest. Several people in congregation tried to stop him, and the man went to the baptismal chapel and began striking a commemorative plaque full of money, which he tried to steal."

BTW, what's up with this, in the FR fundraiser in this thread? An American flag, a Bible, and an Italian gun? And one apparantly chambered in Euroweenie 9, not the One True Cartridge brought down from the mountain by the Prophet John Moses Browning.

Pastor must have been preaching particular redemption.

Yep, that was my thought. Somebody preaching "Clavinism."

And I'm sure someone will be along real soon to blame it all on (a caricature of) Sola Scriptura and an anarchic protestant streak.

At least there are objects in a Catholic Church to hit a priest with. What is there in a Prottie church, barren walls?

Not sure your point. Protestants worship Christ, not objects.

The point being that there was nothing else around to hit the preacher with. And that’s no good.

Depends where you're at. The Calvinist regulative principle of worship doesn't mean stark and barren.

Some places, pew bibles and hymnals. Where we're at right now, chairs. A lot of places have a big brass cross somewhere down front that could do some serious damage in the wrong hands. Among the paedobaptists, baptismal furniture is usually small enough to be pressed into service as an expedient club. Among the credobaptists, the dunk tank is a drowning hazard.

Other places, strangled with the cable harness from the praise band's equipment.

And, not to forget, Jenny Geddes "who is alleged to have thrown her stool at the head of the minister in St Giles' Cathedral in objection to the first public use of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer in Scotland."

Well, yes, I was speaking from personal experience. But I did forget about the guitars and other modern instruments that I saw in churches which would have made for perfect weapons.

I’m from the area and remember when he died quite well. Over the years I have talked to a number of people around Adamsville and Selmer about him and I have heard some incredible stories. But where he’s concerned, it’s hard to separate fact from fiction.

Boy, do you know how do deliver a straight line or what? You got off easy with the (deserved) amount of abuse you took! It could’ve been much, much worse. You should’ve apologized and slinked away quietly.

I don't know if Free Republic gives away ‘Ignorant Comment Of The Year’ awards, but you've got my vote if we do.
