Why I Cringe Every Time I Hear “Safely Home”!

I do not like the poem, “Safely Home”. There, I said it, let the negative comments begin! However, before you write me off as a “nut” or someone who lacks compassion, let me explain why this seemingly comforting poem is not compatible with Catholic teaching and could actually cause your deceased loved ones to suffer needlessly.

Let’s begin by looking at this poem, which is appearing on more and more Catholic prayer cards:

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh, but Jesus’ love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.

And He came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus’ arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still,
Try to look beyond earth’s shadows,
Pray to trust our Father’s will.

There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remains,
You shall rest in Jesus’ land.

When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

(“Safely Home”, author unknown)

On the surface, this poem is very comforting. Who wouldn’t want to know that their deceased loved ones are in Heaven? Unfortunately, the very first line is problematic and makes a statement that no one (other than the Church) has a right to make. Like it or not, unless your relative is a canonized saint, we don’t know if they are in Heaven. While they very well may be, we can never know for sure. Although the thought of their eternal happiness might be comforting to us, it can actually be harmful to the souls of our loved ones. Why? Mainly because if we think someone is in Heaven, we’ll probably stop praying for them!

One of the Spiritual Acts of Mercy is to pray for the living AND THE DEAD. When we pray for the souls of the deceased, we ask the Lord to have mercy on their souls and to accept them into His Heavenly Kingdom. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC):

From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead. (CCC 1032)

Since the Church teaches that our prayers can benefit the souls in Purgatory, it follows that withholding those prayers will have a negative effect. Many of us can remember those days when praying for the souls in Purgatory was a “given” for Catholics. Although I’m stretching my memory a bit, it was just something we did. Here is a example, taken from the foreword of an old prayer book that I found on eBay:

Where Purgatory is, what individuals go there, how long they remain there, are questions which the Church does not answer. She does tell us, however, that the souls in Purgatory can pray for us, and that we, in turn, can hasten their departure from Purgatory by our charities, prayers and especially, by offering and having offered the Holy Mass in their behalf. (Prefatory Note, Our Dear Dead – A Little Book Of Remembrance, 1931 – Passionist Missions)

The concept of Purgatory can be supported by Sacred Scripture (Matthew 12:32, 1 Corinthians 3:15, Revelation 21:27), as can the practice of praying for the souls being purified there (2 Maccabees 12:42-46). We also see evidence of this practice in the writings of the Early Church Fathers:

“A woman, after the death of her husband…prays for his soul and asks that he may, while waiting, find rest; and that he may share in the first Resurrection. And, each year, on the anniversary of his death, she offers the sacrifice.” (Tertullian of Carthage, 218 A.D.)

“Then we commemorate also those who have fallen asleep before us, first patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs, that at their prayers and intercessions God will receive our petition. Then on behalf of the holy fathers and bishops who have fallen asleep before us, and in a word all who in past years have fallen asleep among us, believing that it will be a very great benefit to the souls for whom the supplication is put up, while that holy and most awful sacrifice is set forth.” (St. Cyril of Jerusalem, 350 A.D.)

“Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.” (St. John Chrysostom, 392 A.D.)

So what happens if our deceased loved ones are in Heaven and not in purgatory. Will our prayers be wasted? Not at all. We trust that the Lord will apply those prayers to those for whom they are needed. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia (1917 Edition):

The distribution of the fruits of the communion of saints among the dead, as among the living, rests ultimately in the hands of God, and is one of the secrets of His economy. We cannot doubt that it is His will that we should pray not only for the souls in Purgatory collectively, but individually with whom we have been bound on earth by special personal ties. Nor can we doubt the general efficacy of our rightly disposed prayers for our specially chosen ones as well as for those whom we leave it to Him to choose. This is sufficient to inspire and to guide us in our offices of charity and piety towards the dead; we may confidently commit the application of their fruits to the wisdom and justice of God.

Now that I’ve discussed the theory and the importance of praying for the dead, how can we put it into practice? While I would never recommend reminding a grieving relative or friend that their deceased loved one may not be in Heaven, here are some concrete steps we can take:

1. Assume that our deceased family members and friends are in Purgatory.
2. Have Masses said for our deceased loved ones and friends.
3. Obtain indulgences for the souls in Purgatory.
4. Offer up our suffering and make voluntary sacrifices on behalf of these souls.
5. Pray for the souls in Purgatory EVERY day.
6. Be careful what we say at funerals. Avoid canonizing anyone (“He’s definitely in Heaven”). Instead simply say “His suffering is over” ,”He’s at peace” or “He’s in a better place” or “I’ll pray for his soul”.

While it may not seem like a big deal, imagine you’re that soul in purgatory (unable to help yourself) while nobody on earth is praying for you or offering Masses for your soul. Suddenly it becomes a very big deal! Also, when we think about how many millions of souls are not being prayed for (Protestants, Jews, atheists, etc.) we can appreciate the need for helping them out.

Finally, if any of you happen to hear of my passing from this life…

PLEASE PRAY FOR MY SOUL!

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. (Indulgenced prayer for the souls in Purgatory)

There is no biblical evidence for a purgatory...

Wrong.

Luther edited and corrupted your Bible. When he did, he removed 2 Macc 12:45, which says that it's a "holy and pious thought" to pray for the dead.

Jews prayed for their dead then, did so in Jesus' time (he had no problem with it), and do so now. Luther could remove Scripture he didn't like, but he doesn't get to edit facts.

All Christians except Protestants pray for their dead. The Greeks do, the Russians do, the Armenians do, etc. You guys are the odd man out, because you're in thrall to a set of rationalistic errors invented in the 16th Century by rebels who were the antithesis of "conservative" in every respect.

Prayer for the dead implies a state, condition, or event after death in which they can be helped by our prayers. That can't be heaven; nobody in heaven needs our help, rather, we need theirs. It can't be hell, because those in hell are beyond help. It can only be some middle condition of judgement or purgative (there's that word) cleansing.

Paul knew this when he wrote in 1 Cor 3:15 of those whose works were faulty, who could nevertheless be saved, but "only as through fire". Look it up. It's in your Bible.

BTW, if I say a prayer or two for my dead father on Father's Day, exactly how does that keep me "enslaved to ... religion"?

Purgatory is a concept invented out of whole cloth by a bunch of priests hundreds of years after Jesus died and was resurrected.

Did they invent the concept, or just the name?

See the post immediately below yours. If purgatory was invented hundreds of years after Jesus, why did Jews pray for their dead hundreds of years before Jesus?

This tells us you must be clean (Free of sin) to enter heaven. After they met Jesus they were able to enter heaven. That pretty much fits the criteria for purgatory.

There is no purgatory to have criteria for...

So that's how you get out of purgatory??? You meet Jesus???

Is this what they teach you in their homolies???

Man o Man...Pick up a bible and get a Christian education (from it)...

The place is called Abraham's Bosom...It had locked gates and only Jesus has the key...

Jesus went to Abraham's Bosom to preach to those folks...They accepted Jesus as their Savior and he unlocked the gate and they all went to heaven...

Abraham's Bosom is still there but the gate is flung wide open...It's empty...People no longer go there...

That gate is wide open...THAT is the gate that will not prevail against the church...Your so-called purgatory will not prevail against the church...It doesn't even exist for anyone any more...It is non operational...

Pick up a bible and learn stuff...

Clearly there is a third state that is niether heaven nor hell. Do you see that?

No, there isn't...If you leave this world without being in the arms of Jesus, you have no other chances...

However, 1 Cor 3 does talk about someone who is "saved, but as through fire". Sounds like purgatory to me.

1Co 3:14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
1Co 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Sounds like Heaven to me, and of course it is...

I don't have a Luther bible...

But c'mon...There's so many errors in your added books to the bible that there is no way they were inpired by God..

It’s not referring to hell, it’s referring to a prison, the same word is used to refer to the bottomless pit where Satan is thrown in Rev. 20:7 -

“7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,”

Then, after his “little season”, we see him cast into hell in verse 10:

“10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

So, yes, Jesus did go to a third place that is neither heaven nor hell, he went to the prison, or bottomless pit, that is reserved for disobedient angels.

To be fair to the Catholics, they don’t believe that the unsaved go to their “purgatory”, they believe you do have to be saved on earth to go there.

Having had a near death experience where spirits told me “You’ve done enough, you can come home” I will say, they did say “home.” I was given the choice and I stayed here, although some days I wish I hadn’t.

“Only saved people, destined for heaven, even get to purgatory. “

I do know that this is part of RC theology. There in purgatory you suffer for you sins, for a long period of time, and you get out I think when you have suffered enough, or have the intercessions of other saints made efficacious enough that you get out.

I do reject this notion, for reasons outlined above as well as others, like, Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient to cover my sins, as heinous as they are. I can’t add to the atonement.

Either way it is still a third state that is nietehr heaven nor hell, and if this exists why can’t purgatory?

Because it is unbiblical...You, yourself tried to tell us that purgatory is what the Bible refers to as Abraham's Bosom...

However, again, a little bible search will show you that Abraham's Bosom is empty...The gates are wide open and if anyone did go there, they are free to leave...

It's in there...There's nothing expert about it...It's all basic stuff...

Trust your own eyes and ask God to confirm what you see...

Let me run it for you: 1) Nothing unclean can enter heaven.

2) There is sin that does not kill the soul.

3) Jesus went to the souls in Prison. we know that his was neither heaven nor Hell. Clearly a third state. You want to call it the bosom of Abraham, great knock yourself out. What ever you call it, it was clearly a third state.

4) We know that Moses and Elijah both appeared and were visible to the Apostles on the mount of Transfiguration.

5) From the Story of Lazarus (The beggar) and the rich man, we know that there is a gulf that no human can cross.

6) we also know from the Book of Maccabees that the Jews prayed and made offerings for the dead. Now I know that you don't believe that this is an inspired work, but from a historical perspective it does show the Jewish religious practice. Those in Heaven don't need the prayers, they are not efficacious for those in Hell. Clearly they are offered for those in the third state.

Let me run it for you: 1) Nothing unclean can enter heaven.

You're not going to run anything for me...

Nothing unclean can enter heaven...And that's why Jesus died...To make us clean...We Christians not only can enter heaven, but we are already spiritually seated in heaven...

1Co 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

3) Jesus went to the souls in Prison. we know that his was neither heaven nor Hell. Clearly a third state. You want to call it the bosom of Abraham, great knock yourself out.

Are you speaking to me, or God...He's the one who coined the phrase...

Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

I don't know about your 3rd state...Heaven, Hell and Abraham's Bosom are not states...They are places...

And yes, there is a 3rd place...But the gates are unlocked and wide open...There's no one there and no one is going there in the near future and no one has been there since Jesus cleared it out...

Those in Heaven don't need the prayers, they are not efficacious for those in Hell. Clearly they are offered for those in the third state.

There is no one in the 3rd state...Jesus took all to heaven...Your 3rd state is a ghost town, with no ghosts...

People went to this so-called 3rd state because they couldn't go to heaven since Jesus had not descended and then ascended to Heaven...

NOW, everyone who is saved goes directly to Heaven...

Stop with these man-made fantasies and read what God really has to say about it...
