Preparing to serve — students take missionary class at BYU [Yr later: BYU prof tossed under bus]

BYU students have many options when they choose classes to fulfill 14 required religion credits. Options range from classes that study world religions to Church history, temples, living prophets, and even missionary preparation.

Missionary preparation is a two-credit class, in which students learn skills that will help them if they decide to serve a full-time mission, as well as be a member missionary for the rest of their lives.

"Our program is a support to the training that the Missionary Training Center gives," said Brent L. Top, chair of the Church History and Doctrine Department at BYU. "The Missionary Training Center has the primary responsibility of training full-time missionaries. We help prepare students for the MTC and the mission field by using Church Educational System manuals and auxiliary materials."

The Church History and Doctrine Department of BYU reported that in 2010 there were 3,552 students who enrolled and took missionary preparation classes.

Randy L. Bott has taught mission preparation at BYU for 18 years and focuses on teaching his heavily-attended classes eight key principles of the gospel: The Atonement, resurrection, judgment, faith, repentance, baptism, the Holy Ghost, and to endure to the end.

He focuses on these principles to teach them correct doctrine; he wants them to never be standing in an airport and not be able to answer the question, "What is the gospel?"

"I concentrate on teaching them what they need to know to be ambassadors of the Lord," Brother Bott said. "I want to teach them and help their testimony grow to be centered on Christ. Once they have that principle burning in their soul, they can go forth and preach."

Exactly one year ago, the official Mormon church PR site was touting Randy L. Bott as its prominent theological preparer of its 52,000 missionary program: From the PR piece: Randy L. Bott has taught mission preparation at BYU for 18 years..."I concentrate on teaching them what they need to know to be ambassadors of the Lord," Brother Bott said.

Now the word on the "Mormon street" is that Randy L. Bott will be forced into BYU retirement: "According to private discussions with other religion professors, Bott will no longer be teaching at BYU after this semester. It will be called a retirement. Timing of announcement to be delayed, likely to minimize speculation that the retirement is related to his racist comments to the Washington Post. Bott to say that the retirement had been ib the works for some time. Word is other BYU religion professors are upset the church did not circle the wagons to protect Bott."

So much for being a prominent "ambassador" for the Mormon gods -- and the primary equipper of such ambassadors.

So, by repeating in a 2012 Washington Post interview what he wrote in a 2008 racist blog -- which neither the Mormon church nor Bott's students objected to then...[Bott's blog has now been taken down] we can still see -- per the third link below of six articles -- that Bott was not only the most popular BYU prof in 2008...but BYU students were so enthusiastically pro-bott that they rated him the "Most Popular Prof" in all of America!]

If what Bott promulgated in 2008 made him the most popular prof on the BYU campus & America that year, why the sudden shift by the Lds church hierarchy? (Could it be that Romney had already been eliminated in '08; whereas, now the Mormon PR machine is on hyper-alert-&squelch...lest it foil its own White Horse Prophesy???]

Hey, that's got a certain "ring" to it...with Bott rumored to be retiring from BYU, I'd say he'd be available to be Romney's VP, wouldn't you?

#1...Per the article itself, Bott reduces it to "principles." With Mormonism, that's a key word. Everything is reduced to "principles."

In true Christianity, the Gospel is "good NEWS."

In Mormonism, it's Mormonistic "principles."

What other point here...even tho the Mormon church cracked down upon Bott, this one writer in the Trib asked these relevant questions re: what Bott taught:

"But did Bott teach false doctrine? Were his views incompatible with Mormon theology? If so, how did a man who gets paid to teach students at an LDS university about Mormon theology not understand this crucial theological point? This is a man who spends the better part of his adult life immersed in the writings and teachings of the men who run The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — someone who asserts on his university web page that he’s an expert on the "doctrines of the gospel."

In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.

1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

I don't think we can ever transcend Joseph Smith or consider him to be a valued personality, but now we'll move on.

I don't think you'll see that among believers in the faith, because there are too many other things that came from him

that are the reasons why we do what we do and we are what we are. That there are unanswered questions, to be sure.

That there are things that I'm as anxious as the next guy to learn more detail on, I really want to know. But in the interim,

 it really doesn't, doesn't trouble me.

We're in the religion-making business, as you intimated earlier, only for a short time, I mean, compared to the

Christian church, which has been at this for a couple of millennia. We're about halfway to Nicaea.

And so, and so in that sense — I remember a very tender moment. I was speaking with — I've been invited

to the Salt Lake Theological Seminary, basically an Evangelical seminary, to discuss a book I had done on Jesus.

And they had read it, and they wanted me to come and just respond to questions.

And it was, it was a very enjoyable couple of hours.

 

The very last question that was asked by one of my friends there was this one.

 

He said, 'Bob, what can we do for you?'

 

And I, I wasn't ready for that question. I said, 'What do you mean?'

 

He said, 'What can we, as Evangelicals, do for our Mormon friends?'

 

And I, I guess my mind could have gone a hundred different ways, but what I came back with was this. 

 

I said, 'Boy, I appreciate you asking that. I don't think I've ever been asked that.'

 

But, but I said, 'Try this. Cut us a little slack, will you? Give us a little time.

We're in the religion-making business, and this takes time. It takes centuries.

 

And, and trying to explain the faith and articulate the faith, that doesn't come over night.

We've really only been about that for 20 or 30 years.'

I feel like I have a sense of responsibility to be as, as gentle and kind and, in my case, Christian as possible. It's, to me, if you're, if you want to talk about Christianity or what it stands for, you have to look carefully at what it produces in people. My religion, for me, not only sets forth my theology, but it sets forth my practical, daily living in terms of how I treat other people and how I come to love them.
